UPWARD FLIGHT OF DIAMONDS
Dealera Prepare for the Holiday
Trade by Giving; Prlcea
a Boost.
' Diamonds for holiday presents will cost
this year at least 20 per cent more than
they did twelve months ago. AVholesal
Jewelers are now notifying the retail trade
of the iner-ascd prices.
Firms that buy rough stones from th
De Beers syndicate say that one cans
of the Increase In prlcea Is tit unfavor
able assorting in many shipments. Th
stcnes come in sizes, shopes and qualities
that do not yield on cutting as mauy high
grade gems In the commercial sizes as
In former years. Tha siies most sought
for by the Jewelers are from one-halt to
one and one-half carat in weight. Tbo
diamond manufacturers say tliat they are
getting many large stones in cleaving which
ther Is much waste.
Another element Is that of labor, and ac
cording to many manufacturers they now
pay much higher wages than a year ago.
They say the cost of polishing: diamonds
Is almost twlc what It waa a year ago.
Many of the dealers who liny stone cut
and polished in Europe have recently re
turned, after making their annual pur
chases, snd tell the same story of advanc
ing prices as Is heard from the American
manufacturers. The apportionment of
stones by the syndicate, whose control nf
the trad la worldwide, is said to be even
less favorable to the big factories of AnU
werp and Amsterdam than to thos ot
New York.
Great depth at which the diamond mines
of the Do Beers company In South Africa
are bing worked is given a tha reason
why stones reach the manufacturers In
less attractive assortments and at higher
prices than formerly.
The company's official report shows that
in the De Beers and Kimberley mines,
on which it lias depended for most of th
productions, the bine ground Is now being
obtained nearly hulf a mile lieneath th
surface of th earth.
Tills ground ha been giving a con
stantly lessening return for tha labor of
treating it. As recently as 1897 the yield
was ninety-two carats per 1U loads, while
last year, according to the company's re
port, the yield had fallen to fort-alx
carats.
Outside of the mines owned directly by
the Da Beers company the only source of
aupplies that now reaches the market In
quantities of any Importance Is the nee
Premier mine in Transvaal. Its pro
ductions starting three years sgo wl'.h
les than 15,(00 carats a month, jumped
