NHV TOllK. Oct. ;. Considerable 4pcc
ulmlva lloiildatlon occurrc-d In tlie stock
market vt1ay, althouth tho latter part of
the day waa markM by a decrease of
pressure and substantial recoveries to tile
highest of the day. The early selling was
rot attributed cHpectnlly to Txindoti, but
the recovery set 4n about the time the
I. .dine, 101 me n.ty there was over. Atten
tion wa paid to the London market for
the concentration of periodical settlement
there, which occurred today, and which
carries over rtock market accounts for
another two weeks. Fears of financial
trouble In connection with the concentra
tion of the settlement proved unfounded,
only one small failure helm; reported. Tho
recovery In this market whs partly duo to
relief (iver this news.
The morning fall In prices did not become
precipitate, but was impressive for tho
steady stream of selling orders and tho
apparent la-'k of any supporting measures.
The selling had the advantage of & con
siderable advance In prlce.t at the opening
to start from and the recovery made net
gaina for the day. On the decline prices
In many portions cf tho list fell through
the low levels touched In tho dlwrdorly
freak of la.-t Saturday, thus confirming
the common assumption of a tendency of
price to sag plowly after a first Mcovagy
from a sharp break until the low Teref la
touched again. The political outlook and
the discussion of labor difficulties on smno
of the railroad systems were given soiuo
part In the discouragement manifest In
the speculative tone. Preliminary estimates
pointed to a weak bank return, but the
publication Of these estimates did not
check, the recovery In the market. The In
terior has evidently drawn heavily on
New York again by the express movement,
the loss in balance by the New York
banks on that account being figured In
the neighborhood of S.",0".fX), while the
subtreasury .operations have wlthdrswo
from the banks S1.S7,'HV. The cafh losses
thus Indicated would not leve much of
the surplus of SH.2io.S60 over the legal re
serve Miown by the last Saturday's batik
statement. Upwards of 33.000,000 was trans
ferred to the city from Kan Francisco by
telegraph through the subtreaaury today,
but this I on account of Australian gold
received on the Pacific coast and Is sub
ject to repayment to the government for
gold advanced at the time the engagement
was made for import. There Is a. fairly
general agreement also that loans have
expanded materially during the week." not
for speculative uao In the stocK market.
but for taking up obligations transferred
from tho Ijondon market. The call loan
market continued easy in spite of tho
seeming position of the banks. The time
loan ninrkrt. however, remained strong.
There was some subsidence of demand in
the foreign exchange market with the com
pletion of the lxjndnn settlement, but rates
were well maintained. The recovery be
came slower as prices rose again above
last night's level and the closing was rather
heavy, but was only slightly below the
highest prices of the day touched on the
recovers".

Plir.KP Packers were traveling at a very
moderate pace this morning. As noted yes
terday, the light receipts have forced prices
to a very- high point, se that this market
Is out of line with all others. In fact, fat
sheen and lambs have been selling right up
to Chicago, The result Is that packers evi
dently do not want only enough sheep or
lambs to fill the most urgent orders, hence
are buying very sparingly. This mean a
slow market, and this morning they suc
ceeded In taking ofT a little, some sales of
sheep looking as much as 10c lower, than
jCHterdHy, whllo the same Inmbs that were
here yesterday sold 5c lower. As tioted
yesterday, the market Is In a peculiar con
dition. In that, while prices are very strong,
the feeling is decidedly weak.
The feeder situation was not mnterlaltv
charged this morning. There were a few
country buyers In. but reielpta buve not
been heavy enous'i this week to attract
buyers 1n any great number, so that the
tradij has been pretty slow every day.
Still, good prices have prevailed, all tho
week.

peclally new or Interesting features. The
storms which have reduced receipts to
such a large extent this week have also
made the cattle look very poor. A good
many of the cars which arrived this morn
ing had been on the road a full week and
tlie cattle showed hard UFngc, being dirty
and all shrunk up.
There was a very fair demand for desir
able beef cattle and anything coming un
der tnat head sold at good, steady prices.
There did not appear to be quite us much
snap as yesterday; that Is. packers were
not quite so hungry for supplies, as the
week Is drawing to a close. There was
nothing very choice, good cattle being
scarce, so that sales on paper do not look
as high as the market really was.
Cows and heifers sold generally In the
same notches as yesterday; that is, buyers
generally llgured on not pay'ng over steady
prices. Still, thero wero cases where sales
men thought they got out a little better
than theyvdld yesterday.
Uood feeders commanded firm prices, but
there were hardly enough cattle of that de-
sc! tpllon-on sale to really make a market.
Such an there wero, however,
handa In very fair season. ,
