tion of the settlement proved unfounded,

The morning fall In prices did not become
precipitate, but was impressive for tho
steady stream of selling orders and tho
apparent la-'k of any supporting measures.
The selling had the advantage of & con
siderable advance In prlce.t at the opening

gaina for the day. On the decline prices
In many portions cf tho list fell through

the common assumption of a tendency of

the supplies of money were teimwrarlly
curtailed, owing to settlement require
ments and the Joint stock banks' prepara

steadv. The settlement on the Stock ex
change was concluded satisfactorily, with
the exception of a small failure, which had

moderate pace this morning. As noted yes
terday, the light receipts have forced prices
to a very- high point, se that this market
Is out of line with all others. In fact, fat
sheen and lambs have been selling right up
to Chicago, The result Is that packers evi
dently do not want only enough sheep or
lambs to fill the most urgent orders, hence
are buying very sparingly. This mean a
slow market, and this morning they suc
ceeded In taking ofT a little, some sales of
sheep looking as much as 10c lower, than
jCHterdHy, whllo the same Inmbs that were
here yesterday sold 5c lower. As tioted
yesterday, the market Is In a peculiar con
dition. In that, while prices are very strong,
the feeling is decidedly weak.
The feeder situation was not mnterlaltv

storms which have reduced receipts to
such a large extent this week have also
made the cattle look very poor. A good
many of the cars which arrived this morn
ing had been on the road a full week and
tlie cattle showed hard UFngc, being dirty
and all shrunk up.
There was a very fair demand for desir
able beef cattle and anything coming un
der tnat head sold at good, steady prices.
There did not appear to be quite us much
snap as yesterday; that Is. packers were
not quite so hungry for supplies, as the
week Is drawing to a close. There was
nothing very choice, good cattle being
scarce, so that sales on paper do not look
as high as the market really was.
Cows and heifers sold generally In the
same notches as yesterday; that is, buyers
generally llgured on not pay'ng over steady
prices. Still, thero wero cases where sales
men thought they got out a little better
than theyvdld yesterday.
Uood feeders commanded firm prices, but
there were hardly enough cattle of that de-
sc! tpllon-on sale to really make a market.
