ting County Recorder Bloom of Hancock
county on the stand.
Mr. Bloom Identified the deed record of
the county from which Prosecutor Dsvld
read to the Jury records of certain deeds
transferring land to the Standard Oil com
pany of Ohio. B. C. Slmffei. a local attor
ney and deputy oil Inspector, was the next
witness or the state. He described the
manner of testing oil. At Upper Sandusky,
the witness said, the SUndurd obtained
oil for retail from the Standard refineries
at Cleveland.
On ciosn-cxaminatiun by the defense Mr.
Shaffer snld his territory as Inspector cov
ered several surrounding counties and that
he Inspected the oils of all companies.
After nearly two hours' session the trlwl
was adjrurned until Monday. The ad
journment was agreed on between counsel
out of respect to the memory of formar
Judge Burkett, whose funeral took place
here this afternoon.
The proceedings today consisted of the
taking of testimony of three witnesses
summoned by the prosecution. By evidence
of the county recorder, title was estab
lished In the Standard to a certain lot In
the city of Flndlay. on which is located
their local oil distributing station for the
local retail trade. OH Inspector Shaffer
testified that the oil sold at retail In this
locality was obtained from the Solar Re
fining company at Lima. At Upper San
dusky, also In his Inspection territory they
received the oil from the Standard refinery
at Cleveland.
J. H. Scott, local agent for Joseph Seep,
purchasing agency, occupied the greulcr
part of the session showing the method of
purchasing crude oil from producers. He
said that the oil he purchased- and paid
for by Seep's checks was transferred to
the order of P. S. Trainor of Oil City, Pa.

Before arriving at Holbrook two care were
discovered on fire and were burned. One
car waa empty and the other contained

CHICAGO, Oct. li A fire broke out to
day In the suburb of Lake Bluff, situated
on the shore of Lake Michigan, thirty-live
mllea north of this city. A large frame
hotel, known as the Lake Bluff Villa, was
burned to the ground, and a number of
summer cottages also were destroyed. The
total damage will not exceed l-S.OOO.
