NKW YORK. Oct. 12. R. G. Dun V Co.'s
weekly review of trade tomorrow will sny:
Low temperature brought nut much busi
ness In seasonable lines of wearing apparel,
and most rerxTt from wli.lealerii tell of
the largesi volume of trarte ever Hand
seled. Shipping demands are limited :n
activity by lnad"iuate railway facihthsi
and thl difficulty is becoming aftgiavuied
by the free movement of grain and conl ns
the season advances. Official crop reports
covering conditions on- October 1 Indicated
most satisfactory grain prospects, but dam
age has since reduced the yield of cotton
and caused a violent rHe In prico?. To
this fact Is due some Irregularity In trade
and collection at a few southern cities,
but most centers report expanding business
and confidence regarding the future. In
the leading Industries; It is Impossible to
secure prompt deliveries, even contracts for
shipment during the first quarter of i:i7
being difficult to place with the steel mills,
and the long continued lassitude In primary
markets for cotton goods has been suc
ceeded by an eagerness to purchase that is
advancing quotations.
Conditions In the primary markets for
cotton good show a radical change from
Ihe recent indifferent demand and endeavor
to obtain concessions In prices. Now that
the raw material has advanced beyond gen
eral expectations and there is a prospect of
higher prices there sj a sudden rush to pro
vide for future needs, but the producers
exhibit ns much Indifference ns was for
merly shown by purchasers. Conditions In
the wool industry do not show a similar
broadening of Interest, few duplicate orders
having been placed, and the market still
waits; for some definite attitude by cloth
ing manufacturers.
New Kngland footwear manufacturers
received liberal spring orders from Jobbers
In all sections of Ihe country, with the
best demand for heavy slock, such as sr I t
goods. Producers have large contracts on
hand for winter and spring lines. In addi
tion to supplementary orders for lute fall
delivery.
Liability of commercial failures thus far
reported for October amounted to 81.7S6.14I,
of which $7tW.S58 were In manufacturing,
!W.7R2 In trading and $9 701 In other com
mercial lines. Failures this week numbered
217 In the t'nlted States. agalnHt 214 last

The irfr situation as a h"le I one of
r;,t stretikih. October I i rice being at
a iPi-r.l li'M-l. For the week the feature
in hi ic u I., I Ion lme been the slowness of
dc.ihtigs in gram at small net change In
price and the sharp fluctuation of cotton,
due to contradictory advices ns to frost
il. image. The strength of the metal mar
kets ilemctvc uientlon. Coper has reached
the highest price in sixteen years and Iron
and steel show Increased strength. All
available supplies are eagerly taken despite
unprecedented production. In other lines
of Industry activity I the rule and labor
scarcity I a cause of complaint from manu
facturers, farmers and lumbermen. Col
lections show some Improvement at the
est and are slightly better at the south,
where higher prices for cotton Indue a
freer movement.
Jobbing trade, though of a between sea
sons character. I large for the season.
F.speclHl activity is noted here In wholesale
circles In cotton fabrics, which tend upward
on stronger raw tnuterWI prices. Spring
trade is receiving Increased attention and
Increased orders' nre noted.
Another buying movement, the second
within a few months, has occurred In the
pig iron market nnd prices have again ad
vanced . cents a ton. Most of the busi
ness calls for lnsic pig for delivery In
1:07. purchases of which nggregate about
12V0OH toiif. At the snme lime good sized
orders of foundry Iron have been made
ami for spot supplies high prices are paid.
In fact, the Insistent demand for prompt
deliveries, coupled with the heavv orders
placed for shipment In 19r7 and t he' steadily
advancing price movement, raises fears in
some quartern of a runaway market. It Is
understood that some moderate orders have
he n placed for KtiKilsh ami Scotch irons.
Orders' for structural material are of
goodly proportions. Sheets and tin plates
nre in good demand and the tendency is
to request premiums. Spccltlcatinns 'and
order for steel plates for railway cars nnd
vessels nre hi avy. Steel bars command a
premium of $2.
Cold weather mid report of frost far
south in tho cotton belt were the moving
features in a further excited ndvince in
cotton prices this week. As antlcipnted.
October business in shoes 1 better than
the rather disappointing trade done In
September. A total trade In henv vweiirlit
goods smaller than last ynr I Indicated
for (ho fall season as a whole. Shipments
are 66 per cent larger than in the pre red
ing week, but nearly 2 per cent behind a
year ngo.
Leather is strong as a whole .and the
tenditicy In both sole and upper grades is
toward a higher range.
The Wool markets are still practically
deadlocked, with buyets and sellers apart
and whatever advantage tiiere is is appar
ent ly in buyers' favor.
