covering conditions on- October 1 Indicated
most satisfactory grain prospects, but dam
age has since reduced the yield of cotton
and caused a violent rHe In prico?. To
this fact Is due some Irregularity In trade
and collection at a few southern cities,
but most centers report expanding business
and confidence regarding the future. In
the leading Industries; It is Impossible to
secure prompt deliveries, even contracts for
shipment during the first quarter of i:i7
being difficult to place with the steel mills,
and the long continued lassitude In primary
markets for cotton goods has been suc
ceeded by an eagerness to purchase that is
advancing quotations.
Conditions In the primary markets for
cotton good show a radical change from
Ihe recent indifferent demand and endeavor
to obtain concessions In prices. Now that
the raw material has advanced beyond gen
eral expectations and there is a prospect of
higher prices there sj a sudden rush to pro
vide for future needs, but the producers
exhibit ns much Indifference ns was for
merly shown by purchasers. Conditions In
the wool industry do not show a similar
broadening of Interest, few duplicate orders
having been placed, and the market still
waits; for some definite attitude by cloth
ing manufacturers.
New Kngland footwear manufacturers
received liberal spring orders from Jobbers
In all sections of Ihe country, with the
best demand for heavy slock, such as sr I t
goods. Producers have large contracts on
hand for winter and spring lines. In addi
tion to supplementary orders for lute fall
delivery.
Liability of commercial failures thus far
reported for October amounted to 81.7S6.14I,
of which $7tW.S58 were In manufacturing,

mercial lines. Failures this week numbered

year, and 28 In Canada, compared with 25

Of the two matches In the semi-finals

Railroads Plead Jot Guilty.
NEW YORK. Oct. 12 The New York
Central & Hudson River Railroad company
today pleaded not guilty to Indictments re
turned against it this week for alleged vio
lations of the antl-rebatlng act. Similar pleas
were made for the Western Transit com
pany and for V. O. Eelgar and Edwin
Karle of Detroit, who were indicted in
connection with corporations for violations
of this act. The Indictment resulted from
an extended investigation Into the so-called
sugar trust.

bond he was taken to Muskogee, where he
was placed In the federal Jail. A political
feud between the two men, that had Its In
ception in Ohio several years ago, led to
the trouble.
