Slice showed a moderate decline. Toward
the noon hour, however, a stronprer tona
developed and throughout the remainder
f the seeslon the market held firm. The
Shtef bearish factors affecting the market
t the opening were lower cables, liberal
receipt In the northwest and an Increase
of nearly 2,000,000 bu. In the world's ship
ment compared with those of the same
ireek a year ago. A special feature of
tha world' movement was the relative
magnitude of shipment from Russia and
from Dan uhlan ports, total shipments from
' ttiose placea being over 6,000.000 bu. The
Initial weaknem waa-due aa much to a
lack demand aa to any selling pressure,
and consequently trading was qulst during
the first hour. Later In the day the de
mand became more active, shorts and a
local bull being active bidder. A report
from Duluth claiming that considerable
wheat had been sold there for export
'strengthened the market here. The close
was strong. December opened 45c lower
at 73c to T3o, advanced to 74Vte and
rloaed at 74Hc. Clearances of wheat and
flour were equal to 41.0tt bu. The amount
on passage Increased 680.000 bu. and the vis
ible supply Increased 1.300,000 bu. Primary
receipts were 1,541. uO bu., compared with
1.026,000 1'U. for the corresponding day last
year. Minneapolis. Duluth snd Chlcaro
reported receipts of 1.133 cars, against 1,030
cars last week and 1.2X9 cars a year ago.
The corn market was easier at the open
ing because of selling by cash houses. Ex
cellent weather for the maturlns- of the
new crop was the chief weakening Influence.,
yunni tne last nan 01 me session tne
market became more firm In sympathy with
the strength of wheat, but tne volume of
tradtn was not large. , Commission houses
were the chief buyers. The market closed
firm. December opened Vific lower at

42V Final quotatlona were at 42Hc. Local
receipts were 3t cars of which 150 were of
contract grade.
Favorable weather In the northwest for

In the day. Pit trader and some email
holder were tha chief sellers. letter In
th day active demand by commission
houses caused a firmer feeling. December
opened 4C lower at 84c. sold off to S.Vfcc
and then advanced to 84V:. The close was
at 34tC Local receipts were 43 cars.
Provision were easier at the opening be
cause of a decline of 6c on the price of
live hogs. Later sentiment became some
what bullish and prices made an advance.
Covering by shorts In October lard was a
failure of the market. There was also
some buylnr for . foreign account. At the
close January pork was up TUc at tl3 57ty:

NEW YORK. Oct. 8 A few of th less
rromlnent stocks furnished rather a
spectacular feature In today's market, but
ne trading on the whole was dull ana
uninteresting and prices moved In a
sluggibh manner. The Arm undertone of
the market was largely eympathetic witn
he few notable advances. The only
factor In the general situation which
could be held to account for the apathetic
speculation was th money market conditions.
The Immediate outlook with the opening
of the week did not fully hold the promise,
offered by last week's marked relaxation.
While there was no actual stiffening to
day the downward course of Interest rates
was quite distinctly checked. me re
sult, was, lesa confidence In additional
ease In the securing of resources ror
stock market operations. The disappoint
ing exniDii 01 tne nanus in ma weeaijr
statement of conditions was not held ac
countable for the tone of the money
market, aa the actual condition was be
lieved to have Improved much more than
was Indicated by thl comparison of the
week's averages. The course of foreign
money markets had more effect. These
distinctly reversed the easing tendency
of last week and moved upwards. Dis
counts were quotably higher In Ixndon,
Paris and Berlin. Discussion was re
newed of the probability of a rise In the
official Bank of Germany this week. Our
foreign exchange market moved upwards
and the demand In that market was ssld
to b largely for remittance to cover
maturing finance bills. These maturities
are known to fall Into a very larg
amount during October and the rise In
foreign money rates adds to the induce
ment to recall them or adds to the cost
of renewing them. Th bearing on th
foreign exchange situation of the outcome
of the cotton crop receives special at
tention In view of the fears of a smaller
cron than has been estimated, with a
corresponding reduction In the avallabl
surplus Tor export. 1 ne reamunry
movement In today' cotton market was
a satisfactory development in that part
of the situation. More or less active dis
cussion is going on in financial circles
of the great extension of banking credits
in tne country at large ana inn
Plaved In them by real estate, mining
and other speculation.
The movement in special siocas ioojr
nearly all had rumors of happenings or
individual Importance to account for them.
The General Electric advance wae ac
companied by representatives of a coming
stock Issue with subscription rights. The
strength In Westlnghouse Electric, Ameri
can Locomotive and Allls-Chalmers was
aympathetlc or due to rumor or actual
mergers in contemplation. Industrial
ronnnctKd with the corner trade were all
affected by the extraordinary market for
the metal, wnicn toucnea recora pnuj
both In London and New York, with ap
parently no supply available for immedi
ate delivery, order for the nearby months.
in contrast came iwyjt v.
termination of the United Btates Steel
corporation to make no advance in prices
of finished products In spite of the urgent
demand. Railroad officials reported grow
ing difficulty In taking care of the freight
offering for transportation and a certain
prospect of freight congestion If any ob
struction occurs from bad weather.
Union Paclflc was the only prominent
railroad stock to show notable atrength.

Klir.Itr Receipts of sheep, while smaller
than on Monday of last week., were very
liberal. 1h arrive It cvnalsted principally
01 feeder, there being a good many lamb
among the offering.
Theie seemed to be a very good demand
and there was no hk-hI rvi.on why tne
market snouia not have been fully steady.
I nloi tiinate.y, snippers have been flooding
tli Cliitaan market, wltn the result that
prices at that po4nt have been nrrlititng
rstildiv.. V ntn mat nmrKet rei-mrteii M.tatu
I receipt this morning, with prUvs generally
J 10c lower, buyers at tm point became
1 rather weak-kneed and c nimnem-ed talk
I Ing easier prices. In apite of that fact,
(however, the market opened out Bt.ady 011
both kllier Sim feeders and a consideiable
I proportion of the receipts sold thst way.
On th other hsnd. there wss an umltT
tone of weaknese to the market, and some
, s.Mes actually looked lower. The trade as
a whole might be deaorihed as slow to a
! little lower than last week.

LONDON. Oct 8.-Money was In fair
ply and demand In tha market today,
count were steady. Operators on
took exchange were Idle, the uncertain
monetary ouiiook checking business. Con.
sols experienced an opening loss, but se
curities generally were llfeies. Foreign
er were supported by Paris and showed
a hardening tendency especially Russians.
Americana opened rather weak on the die
appointing New York bank statemrnt. but
recovered the parity loss In the forenoon.
Later New York advices caused buying
of Erie, United State Steel and Union
Pacific and the market hardened and
closed firm at about the best quotation
of the day. Copper shares hardened, In
sympathy with the sharp rise In the price
of metal. Kaffir were dull, with th ex
ception of De Beers, which was supported
on dividend anticipations Japanese Im
perial 6s of 1904 closed at KM.
PARIS. Oct 8. The improvement no".,
tinued on the Bourse today, the rise Ia
Russians having a sustaining Influence.
Prices closed firm. Russian Imperial 4a
closed at 71.36 and Russian bonds of lftH at
483.
BERIJN, Oct. 8. Prices on the Bourse
war omewht weaker In consequence ot
the rle in the discount rte of the Imperial

I absolutely nothing that could be quoted
cnoic. it wouio. do sale to quote th
general beef market a steady to strong
and fairly active.
Cow and heifers were at leaat ateady.
On tha opening sellers who happened to
have desirable kind which were espe
cially wanted by packers reported that
they got a little stronger price, in fact
now and then you could And a aaleaman
who would quote good cow strong tu loo
higher. It was evident, however, that
most buyers did not car to pay any bet
ter than steady price and the later sales
were largely on that bast.
Uood feeders seemed to be In active de
mand and the market opened with that
kind In good request at strong prices.
Medium to common grade wer a little
low, but the fact that speculators war
pretty well sold out Saturaay and that th?
receipt today wer light helped to make
them sell a littl mor freely than they
would have done under other condition.
