for the year ending September 30, 1 The
report has to be made out annually and
sent to the secretary of state at 1

while the amount paid to the county

amount of fines collected during the year

From Council Bluffs twenty-two persons
were sent to the penitentiary, thirteen to
the county Jail and fines 'were Imposed on
eight. . From the district court ut Avoca,
three were sent to the penitentiary.
The longest sentences Imposed were:
Arthur Flets, bigamy, three years; R. L.
McBride. burglary, three years; James
Arthur, blowing Treynor bank safe, nine
years; Mickey Taggart. Inrreny from the
person, six years; James Hardiner, colored,
attempted criminal assault and entering
and breaking, twenty years.

the Insanity commission of Polk county
today Paul Kerns, alias C. F. Mandell,
was dlscha. .), but romance uncovered
in which Miss Ella Van Glllan or Lorlmrr,
Ia., played a part. She was about to
marry Kerna when informed that he was
an ex-convict. As boys Kerns and Prof.
C. O. Denny of Drake university In this
city grew up near Maltland, Mo. While
there Kerns was sent to the penitentiary
for fcurglary for five years, but was re
leased before the expiration of his term
At Loriiner, Ia., he became acquainted
with Miss Van Glllan .and a correspond
ence was continued while Kerns went to
Chicago. Miss Van Glllan came to Des
Molnea to study as a nurse ' and Kerns
returned from Chicago and called on her.
8he was found rooming at the home of
Prof, and Mrs. C. O. Denny and the pro
fessor at onbe recognised Kerns as his
boyhood acquaintance and Informed Miss
Van Glllan of the facts. Prof. Denny had
Kerns arrested on a charge of Insanity,
charging that ha had threatened his life.
Kerns was discharged by the commission
on the showing and charged Prof. Denny
and wife with poisoning Miss Van GUlan'a
mind against him.

City today that Dr. R. E. Connlff of that
city, a member of the State Board of
Health, was very seriously injured In an
accident by his buggy being overturned
from running over a pile of dirt In - the
street. Three ribs were broken and Mra.

fractures of her left arm. Both were badly
bruised. .
