MARKET TURNS BUOYANT IN LAST HOUR
Aaaeeaeeraeat that Teraaa ef Or

NEW YORK, Oct l-A sjugglsh upward
Miovement Ol prices gave way In the last
hour of the trading today to a buoyant and
ahin ated upruan which made up almost as
Isrge a volume of business as tne wnole of
that for the rest of the day. The revival
of the statement verified shortly after the
close ot trading that the "ore deal" was
ready to be announced, once more caused
the awakening ot the market. L'p to that
time dealings hud been so dull as to oiler
small held for comment ouialde the gen
eral pustled conjecture as to the cause lor
t ue sudden relapse from speculative anima
tion early In the week.
The foiecasta of tne bank statement were
for an Increase of $X.0uu,uO to tH.oii0,fJ0 In
cash, according to tha computation of the
usually accepted authorities. This gain Is
due to ths deposit of government funos with
the banks under the offer of the Treasury
department whlcti was Ister modified to In
crease the New York allotment by reason
of the rejection of the offer by Interior
banks. The regular express movement with
the Interior, however. Indicates a persist
ence of demand on New York, the move
ment on balance against New York amount
ing to ahout 2,Kv.0'j. Money on call was
much easier. The hslt In the operations by
large capitalists was attributed In some
quarters to desire to await the clearing of
differences over the ore deal. Tha stoCKS
Immediately connected with the project
were notably strong In the day's narrow
market. Humors were afloat st one time
that President Cassatt of the Pennsylvania
had died. Contradiction of this report did
not entirely relieve the market trom the
repressive effect of the talk of his 111 health.
Borne allowance must be made for the di
version of speculative activity to quarters
outside the Stock- exchange in accounting
for apathetic conditions there. 'Wall street
gave attention to the cotton market In
periods of excitement there, such as ruled
today.
'I'h renewed nnnrehenslnn Over the COltOn
crop Is of direct Importance to holders of
shares In the cotton carrying railroad.
The proceedings In the outside market also
offered a strong contrast to the somnolence
on the floor of the Stock exchange. Crowds

HlXStt No rreat change took place In
the hog market this morning While sell
ers could point out strong spots and weak
spots the general trade waa about the
same as yesterdsy so far as prlcea wri
concerned. The movement, however, wss
very slow and tt waa a dull niarket from
start to finish. The quality of the boss
did not range an good as yesterday, so that
top sales do not show up to as good ad
vantage on pap.
It will be noted from the sales thst hogs
of different quality are working closer to
gether. The best shlrplng and butcher
weight hogs are also selling to better ad
vantage aa compared with the lighter
weights thsn they were ths first of the
week. In other words, while the top has
not shown any Improvement the bottom Is
not ss low as It wss a week ago.

LONDON, Oct. B. The rates for iimney
were easier In the market today, owing
to large dividend and government distribu
tions. Discounts were lower In sympathy.
Prices on the Stock exchange continue
stesdy, but tho easier money rates have not
expanded business, which was extremely
dull with the exception of homo rails, where
fair Investment purchases were noticeable.
Consols declined in the afternoon owing to
continued gold exports. Among foreigners
Russians were . the weak pot on the
pessimistic statement of the KusBlan min
ister of fl nan o.f. Americans developd Irre
gularity, with pronounced weakness In
Canadian Parlflc but the active Issues
hardened fractionally tn the forenoon on
local suuDort. Later the New York ad

Wool Market.
BOSTON. Oct. 5. WOOL The Com
mercial Bulletin of this city, basing its
report upon statistics gathered for the
government, .will say tomorrow; The
strength developed at the London auctions
and the moderately active business being
accomplished here are Imparting a more
cheerful and strengthening tone to the
wool situation. In tha opinion of the
lending merchants, prices are now at rock
bottom and any changea that may occur
will be towards a higher level. In all
quarters It is contended that values will
at least be maintained on today's basis.
Some manufacturers realizing the futility
of breaking the market, are purchasing
supplies. The prominent and leading con
sumers are operating. Three-eighths end
bait-blood grades of both domestic and
foreign wools are In more active request.
Transfers Include territory, fleece, Aus
tralian, Texas and California wools. As
a rule the sales are of moderate quantity,
around 100,000 pcunda, but a few touching
the half-million point are also reported.
In addition, It Is stated that a recent trans
action in three-eighths territory amounted
to nearly 1.00o.0) pounds. A report that a
large quantity of fine medium territory wag
sold on a tfic basis is authoritatively denied.
Half and three-eighths Montana la selling
at 2S28c; fine medium brings 234r2le.
Original bags and graded stock are moving

C.Vi"lL,ii Receipts of cattie looked small
today us compared with recent days and
still the run was considerably larger thsn
a week ago. For the week to date receipts
show a lair gain over the corresponding
period of last week, as will be noted trom
the table at head of column.
The supply of beef steers was very light
and thre was nothing choice Included
among the receipts. Such cattle as there
were sold In about the same notches as
yesterday, the market being without note
worthy chango In any direction. The mar
ket for the week Is a little stronger.
The supply of cowa and heifers was also
small and they, too, sold at steady prices.
The market as a whole was without any
noteworthy feature of Interest. Everything
In sight In the morning changed hands
very readllv and the trade came to an end
nt an early hour for the want of more
stuff to sell.
A considersble proportion of the receipts
consisted of stockers and feeders. The ar
rivals this week of that kind of cattle
have been quit liberal, and while the
country has bought freely speculators still
had quite a good many cattle on hand tills
morning that were carried over from yes
terdav. Thev were In consequence cau
tious 'this morning and the feeder trade as
a whole was slow. Good feeding cattle
have sold as high this week as nuy time
and the common to medium grades have
been gradually working lower,
nepret-entative sales:

BIIEEP-It was a little slow In the big
sheep barn this morning, but It was a Frl
oav and no art-eat activity waa expected.
Feeder buyers who cama In early In the
week had. aa a rule, secured what they
wanted and gone home, and as usual
toward the last of the week, there was no
great number of new arrivals. At the same
time packers, who were free buyers earlier
In the week, were pretty well tilled up and
not especially anxious for supplies. The
fact la that packers felt that they bad
been paying too much all the week, eapo
ciallv for fat sheen. Aa will have been
noted from the sales, good wethers have
been selling this wekk at ii.0ut'.2S. which
Is fully as hlah or a little higher than
the same kind of stuff haa been bringing In
Chicago. Aa the receipts of good killers
have not been very large during the week.
pacKers nave neen forced to pay ne one,
but under protest, so that It was not sur
prising today that they should bold barlt
and not try very hard to buy anything
additional.
Buyers kept working away and at the
time of closing this reDort there was very
little desirable stuff of any kind, either
feeders or killers, left In th barn. Good
wethers, both killers and feeders, gold up
$6 and good fat awes brought tt.ot. There
were no good lambs to make a test of the
mnritei.
The most striking feature of the sheep
trade thla week has been the slx Of the
receipts. For the five days 119,M sheep
and lambs have been received, which Is
the largest In the history of this market.
Previous to this week the largest receipts
for any one week was 193.26U whlcb wss
the nrllrlnl count fnr the week ending OctO
her T. 1WA t ha, rivnrH fnr 1904 was held
by the week ending October 8, when 94.0SS
was the official count. In 1903, tha largest
run wns fnr the weelr endlnar OolOtoer If.
when the total footed up 96,u3. It will be
understood that the figures are for the six
days. It will be seen from this that the
big runs at this point have always occurred
during tno early part 01 ucuioer.
In spite of the excessive receipt
market this week lias been In an excep
tlonally good condition. Day after day the
receipts have poured in until tne capacity
of the bio- sheen barns haa been strained
to the utmost, and still buyera have stood
uo and taken the arrivals, practically oiran
ing up the supply every day until yester-

yesterday the market eased on. ana wnon
It finally closed last night there were still
quite a few left unsold. The holdovers,
however, were very largely of the undo
slrahla kinds, which never sell verv freely.
Under the good buying demand prices huve
held up remarkably well, In spite of thia
fact that eastern markets have shown more
or less weakness. While, as Is always the
case with such large runs, It Is possible
to point out high sales and low sales, the
general market could not be quoted over
loiJ26c lower for the week, with the decline
the heaviest on common to medium lambs.
As noted yesterday, there Is quite a sprink

generally aa "tripe," left In the bnrn. and
as a matter of course that kind of stuft
Is a good deal lower than last week, al
