NEW YORK. Oct. 2.-The stock market
did not maintain the brave snow of
Hrrnnth with which it started out today.
auhougb surface conultlotia were in favor
of the market. This waa particularly true
of the money market, winch continued to 1
relax both 111 the rune for time loans and
for call loans. The premium on time loans
for over ninety days haa practltaiiy dis
appeared, in the cull loan department even
yesterday's moueraie siiftne!, measund

of the hMvy October requireminia were
thua disproved. The dimension of torse
rejoireinenis was indicated by the enor
mous clearing house exchangee bet wren the
banks today, the total rising to 34t.olO,.U
compared with a record day clearings on
January 3 of this year of 3J6.844.kto. On
only two other occasions, and that during
the great financial operatlona In the rail
road world which precipitated the panic
of IS11I, have today s exchangee - at toe

The skill Wltn wntcn yesterday a a rem.

In Now York amounted to 3JO.OOO.UO), and
early repaymenta of temporary lndebtednaas
of the olty is looked for as a consequence.
The weekly statement of the Imperial
Bank of Germany reflected the strain of
the October settlements on that market
alao, with a decline in cash holdlnga of
upwards of $42,000,001), an Increase of loans
of 3,206,000 and an expansion In the out
standing note issues of the baik of 380.
786.0U0. But these figures also represented
work already accomplished, and the pri
vate rate of discount receded in Berlin
today. In London, however, It advanced,
and tha expectation became more general
that the bank rata will be advanced on
Thursday probably a full 1 per cent to 0
per cent to put a check to the outgo of
gold. This waa. In reality, the only feature
In the altuatlon on the money market side
to account for tha hesitating tone of the
stock market. Ths easier tone In the
money market Is attributed to some ex
tent to tne release to tne mii -""-which
have been withheld waiting for a
rise In the call loan rate. The email
promise today of a high rate for call loana
prompted the placing of soma of these sums
of money in the time loan market, with
appreciable effect la easing Its tone.

HOOS Receipts of hogs were
for a Tueadav. aa will be noted
table at the head of this column. Still It
wss sbout an average run, aa compared
with previous weeks. The market opened
with aome of the mora desirable ugnt
and medium weight hogs, which were
wanted to fill some special orders or for
Immediate slaughter, selling st a little
stronger prices than yesterdsy. The de
mand, however, from thst source waa not
very extensive and waa aoon satisfied.
The big packers were generally holding
back, with the evident Intention of paying
no mors than steady prlcea, so that the
freneral market was slow and late Isr open
ng. When it did open heavy hogs sold
generally steady.
Sh.ppers would do well to understand
that tha new Inspection law went Into ef
fect yeaterday and that buyers are very
particular about anything that Is not Just
up to standard. Any hogs not fit for food
will be tanked, which means that the ship
ner will receive only dead hog prices.
I'nder this claaa will come slrk hogs, hogs
with bad sore, rougn old boars, etc,

CATTLE Yesterday's receipts of cattle
proved much larger than antioipatad, the
trains coming In until lata In tha afternoon.
The official count ahows the total arrivals
to have been 400 cara, or 10,447 head. Aa
several trains did not arrive until after
the market had closed, quits a good many
cattle were carried over until today.
Thla morning there was another large
run, over 300 cars being reported In the
morning. In spits of the large receipts the
best grades of beef cattle were generally
steady. Good cornfed steers sold as high
as 4626, with the best rangera at S6.26.
There were, however, a good many com
moa to medium kinds of cattle, and they
were all alow and generally lower. Warmed
up cornfeda were especially alow aale, at
they coma Into direct competition with
the range beef, which buyers seem to
prefer.
There were all of 100 ears of cows and
heifers on sale this morning. With no
more than tha usual buying demand, pack
era were not alow to see that the advan
tage was all on their aide and the heavleat
buyers started out right from the first
with a determination to tske oft at least
too. The general market could safely be
auoted that much lower than yeaterday.
Oood feedera. having weight and auallty.
did not aeem to be especially plentiful, and
aa that kind la very much sought after
It waa no trouble to secure steady prices.
On the other hand, buyers were Inclined
to go slow when It csme to the common
and medium grades, and they generally
tried to buy tnetn lower man yesterday.

flHRRP Tha official count ga
dav'a recelots of sheep as 84.711. The total
number ot cara was 122, which was only five
leas than the largest run in tne History 01
the market. As noted yesterday, the mar
ket onened a little alow on acoount of the
very large receipts and the reported lower
market at Chicago, out later on, under tne
Influence of the very good local demand. It
became active and fully steady; In fact,
good feeders tn many cases sold even
stronger. While the true was active, the
recelpta were ao large that, aitnougn every
one kept busy from early In the morning,
the scales did not close until after 3 o'clock
at nla-ht. When they did close, thouah.
there was very little left unsold aatde from
throwouts and miscellaneous trash. Sellers
without exception were very much pleased
Ith the market and buyers also seemed
well satisfied, so the trade as a whols waa
entirely satisfactory to all concerned.
when the market opened this morning
there were about 120 freah cars In sight
and. while there .were olentv of desirable
sheep and lambs among the arrivals, there
waa a very large sprinkling of trash. For.
tunately buyera were In large attendance,
so that the market opened early at steady
prices. In spits of ths large receipts of the
last few weeks It Is very evident that the
country Is not yet satisfied and that there
is sun a large demand lor reeoing stock
that Is not yet filled. Ths receipts changed
hands about as fast as they could be
shaped up and the market was In most
respects a repetition of yesterday a trade.
Packers also started out In the morning
buying freely of good fat sheep and lambs
and they, too, paid fully steady prlcea.
