secured for other purposes. A resulting
rise In tha price of gold and in tne open
market discount rats marked the continued
opposition of the London money niarkst
to the relinquishment of gold. Less appre
hension Is felt, however, as to ths ability
of New York borrowers to secure a re
newal ,of the finance bills held In London
and which mature In very large amounts
during October. Recent canvasess amongst
London bankers reveal a willingness to ex
tend the period of these credits, and this
Is believed to play an Important part In
the unimpaired confidence with which the
speculative position In ths New York stock
market Is being maintained. The day s
principal movements show the large part
&layef by tha ore lands deal, St. Paul and
outhern Pacific merger, buying of Read
ing for control and a coming per cent
dividends for Atchison, all still In the form
of rumors and renominated for new use
for doing service many previous times.
The market closed slightly Irregular, but
with strong stocks near the top.
There was a broader market for bonds,
in contrast with Its recent narrowness and
sluggishness. September sales of to'"
were 25,300,000 shares, an Increase of 8,300,
000 over last September, while bonds sold
In September st a par value of 842,860,
000. were SS.247,000 less than In last Septem
ber. Total sales today, par value, $1,676.

CATTLE Receipts of cattle this morn
ing were very liberal, $43 cars being re
ported, which was about the came as one
week ago and larger than two weeks ago
by over 100 cars. The market as a whole
was In very fair condition and generally
satisfactory to sellers.
There were no beef steer of any con
sequence In sight, either corn-feds or
greasers. The fact was, considering th
large receipts of other kinds of cattle,
the beef supply - was extremely meager.
At the same time there was a fair de
mand and the market aa a whole Just
about steady wltn the close of last week.
For some reason or other buyers seemod
to be especially eager for good cows anjl
heifers and In spits of the fact that the
receipts of that kind of cattle were very
liberal tha market on the best grades was
quite actlv at strong prices. In fact, tha
general market might be described as
steady to strong.
It being Ak-Sar-Ben week, feeder spec
ulators were all anticipating a very large
country demand and for that reason they
were all free buyers of stockers and
feeders this morning. In spits of th
fact that the receipts of that kind of cat
tle were large the market opened In good
season and was fairly actlvs on all de
sirable kinds. Prlres generally remained
about steady with last week, at least that
was true of everything th.t could be con
sidered at all deslrabls

HOGcl Receipts of hogs were so light
that there wers not enough In sight to
really make a market. Aa usual whon
such conditions prevail It took longer to
sell the few loads her than it usually
does to dispose of much larger receipts,
as buyers did not seem to feel that there
were enough hog in sight to rsaily pay
to bother with.
Some of the early sal mad to speo
nlstors looksd a Uttl stronger than last
week's close, but tha general feeling was
only about steady and the trade was slew
at that.

SHEEP foe receipts were largo this
morning. 128 cars being reported, which is
th largest day's receipts on record at
this point sloes September 14, 1904. Th
large run, however, was not surprising
as svsry on bad sutttk-livAlod beavy so
celpts for every dsy this week. It might
be sdded In this connection that the re
ceipts for Peptcmber proved to be the
Urgent for thst month in the history of
the msrket. More than that, the receipts
were the Isrgest for any montn in tho
history of th yards, bsrring only Octo
ber. The official count f last week's re
ceipts showed the total to have fnllen
very little short of the lflo.oo) maik,
which more thsn the total receipts
for the week st Kansas City, Kt Joseph,
St. Ixinls and Sioux Cltv.
In spit of the fact thst re-elpts wove
Isrge this morning, buyer were out !n
the barn In very good seaaon snd packers
were not long In opening t?ie market.
There seemed to be s very good dema'id
for desirable fst stuff and the msrket on
sll good grades could ssfelv l celled ss
stesdy. As packers all seemed to be
looking for good killers, the trsde on In
ferior grades being rather slow.
As usual at this sennon of the yesr ths
grest big bulk of al! the receipt con
sisted of feeding sheep and Umhs As
It was a Monday morning the attemlsnce
of country buyers wss not especially
large, but they kept dropping In all dsy
on the later psssenger trslns so that be
fore th close of the msrket there were
a large number of buyers snd prospective
buyers present. The msrket opened
rather slow on all klni of leeders, the
early buying being limited largely to
buying on orders on th part of comml.f
Inn men. As the offerings were so Isrge
and ss Chicago was reporting a still fur
ther decline there was a tendency to btar
the market wherever It was possible to do
so. While a good deal of the more desir
able kinds sold aa well as last week, tho
tendency of the market was lower.
As the trade got under way It became,
apparent that the demand for feeders wss
much Isrger thsn sppesred on the opening
and the market Inctead of closing up lower
ss had been expected, took a turn In the
other direction. In fact, feeders became
not only active, but fully stesdy, and In
some cases stronger thsn last week.
Feeder buyers stood up to the rack and
took everything ottered, so that by mid
day the big end of the receipts had changed
hsnds. In fact everything sold about ss
fast ss It could be hsped up resdy to bo
shown.
Considering the large receipts, it would
be hsrd to Imagine a market In a more
satisfactory condition.
