The damage suit, brought by Mrs. Chris
tina West of this city against th street
railway company for the drowning of her
daughter, Marie Louise West, U Lake
Marawa, on 'July 4 of this yct when a
portion of the platform of . the Kursaal
collapsed, was settled In district court
yesterday by the company paying $L00.
Mr. West sued as administratrix of- her
daughter's estate end the settlement was
approved by an order from Judge Macy. -
The suit of Mrs. Ellen Murphy, adminis
tratrix of the estate of her deceased hus
band, against , the Kurthwestera Railroad
company was also settled, the railroad
company paying tft.ooo. Murphy was an
employ of the Northwestern railroad and
was' killed In an accident at California
Junction on June 3 of this year. The order
empowering the administratrix to settle the
tilt on the 'terms named, wa Issued by
Judge Macy.. '-, . . ,'
Walter Monroe, colored, Indicted on a
charge of forging the name of the Clark
Drug company,' by which he was employed
a porter, to a check which he succeeded
In cashing In a Incsl saloon, entered a
plea of guilty and was sentenced to nine
months in- the penitentiary at Fort Madi
son. Monroe Is a colored man of mora than
ordinary education and attainment. He
formerly resided at Atlanta, Oa., wher h
passed the civil service examination and
wa In the railway mail service for eight
years, but lost hia position on a charge of
Insubordination and neglect to pay an in- .
debtednes. He fought the case in Wash
Ington but lost. He also occupied a clerical
position in the probate court In the south.
He Is said to have a wife and family In
Chicago. f
John Johnson, Indicted on a charge of
Indecency1, escaped, on 'a plea of guilty
With a sentence of one dy In the county
Jail, Judge Macy taking Into account the
fact that. the. man had been behind the
bar of, the county baatil since June 4.'
