GENERAL DECLINE AFTER SLIGHT AlVANCE Prospective Tlahtaess la Meaey Still th Leading Featar at Ik Xesv Bead Are Irregalar. NEW TORK, Sept. 2.-Prlce movement were divided by considerable Interval f time In the day tock market and tor the mot of th day th current wa luggien and llatle, with a disposition to cling about last night's level. When there wa ny show of mobility movement were ex ceedingly vacillating and unorrtaln, the level of price ahowlng the tame tendency to return to laat night a level. At one time during th day there waa a fair average of gain acattered through the Hat. but from that leyel price plunged to a general decline. It waa difficult to trace the fac tor In all these movements. A general air of doubt and of waiting for enllgntenment waa perceptible in the neighborhood of the Stock exchange. A large amount of attention waa given to the political party convention at Buffalo and Saratoga, and trader in atocka were likely to be influenced In their operation by their Interpretation of event a making for or against the growth cf 'socialistic tendencle toward capital." There waa some further special pressure against the New York public utilities on a aupposltion that the welfare of these corporation i eieclally concerned In the future aa it la being shaped by the political campaign. An early call money rate ot 6 per cent also proved a discouragement to speculative entlment, a it wa uppoed . that it marked the beginning of the pinch of the preparation for the October aettleiuent. This tear waa disproved by the later dc velonmenta. th call loan rate falling back lieu, re the active money lending of the day wa concluded. Not only was the call money market undisturbed, but an appre ciably easier tone prevailed for time louna. and additional auppliea were offered in that market. There hs been come money with held from the call loan market waiting for a rise In the rate to a designated figure. It Is believed that the failure ot call loan rates to advanoe has prompted placing aome money thua held In the time loan market.- Yesterday wa the last day for payment of subscription to half the con templated Issue ot St. Paul stock, calling for about $12,000,000, and the completion of arrangements for the payment may have released some money. An announcement of an additional engagement of $1,600,000 gold for Import also helped the monoy market, as It wa feared that the dwindling proportion of the movement lately had reached the vanishing point. The foreign exchange market eased off to aome extent today and discount rate were lower In the open market In London. Thla leave the open market rate above the official rate of the bank, but there Is less expecta tion that the bank will advance Ita official rate tomorrow. Money continue to move from New York to the Interior, espe cially by the Indirect method of payment of revenue at Interior points by drafts on New York. Thie helpa to account for the large gains by the aubtreaaury from the local banka, which amount to $7,771,000 lnc th laat bank atatement. Included In thla la upwards of $4,000,000 In return of ?overnment deposits againat gold engaged or Import, for which the bank are reim bursed by receelpt of the foreign gold. The course of events In Cuba had a share In the unsettlement of the market from time to time. Th market uncertain fluctua tions continued up to the laat. price rising to the beet of the day In the final hour and then running off again, with an eay C,BonSa were Irregular. This is the heaviest run for a Wednesday so far this 'year. Mar than that, the total recelpta for in three daya this week are tne largest for any similar period so far tills year. As will be noted from 'the table at tno- head of the. column, receipt are also -tunning considerably ahead of a year ago. The fact that a good many ot the trains were lale in arriving delayed . the trade: very, materially, so tnat It waa after the middle of the forenoon before the market really opened,, and It waa well along - to ward midday befiire any great amount of business was transacted. The offerings of beef steers were very large, a considerable proportion of the fresh receipt consisting of range steers good- enough or killers. The market on the best grades did not show any very great change, a compared with a year ago, while other klnda wer un evenly lower and slow. Recelpta of cow and heifer were also large and buyera announced right at the start that they would demand a conces sion from yesterday's figures. Still, there was a fair demand and some of th best cows sold at prices that did not look much different from yesterdsy. On the other hand a good msny cattle aold aa much as 100 lower. -.!:' Speculators had a good many feeder which they had been forced to carry over from yesterday and day before, the coun try demand having proven disappointingly light. Therefore, . they were pi f pared to buy fresh cattle at considerably lower price thsn yesterday. Fortunately for owners, there were not very many feed er among the day'a recelpta and It was due to that fact that lhe market did not how 6 much change. Such feeder as buyer happened to want were, perhaps, steady, but the general feeling wss lower. Everyone Is anticipating a large sttend anc ot feeder buyers next wtek on ac count of the attractions offered during tne Ak-tar-Ben festivities. Representative sale: - BEEF STEERS. Ka. P'' a . It Is no easy matter to give an exact Idt of the condition ot the maiket at Hit point on sheep and iamba. Aa noted ex tern y th severe Creak ut week and till at Chicago haa caused a uoniid ten dency at this point, but It la hard to say just how much lower the maiket really is. Th fact is It la posaible to pick out a good many salea ot desirable fecer sucn aa buyers happened to lake a fancy to that look fully teaoy. On tne other nana, its desirable klnda and even some right good kinds are decidedly lower, in many cases sll of 60c lower than last week's close. This haieeveelfilly true of ewes and of me dium kinds of lambs of which there are a got d many coming. The demand, however, contimiea very fair and In spite of the largj receipts the pens have been pretty weil cleared every night before the close ot the market. Commission -men without exception ere sdvlslng their friend who sre looking for feeder sheep and lambs to get their nrriers In at once as there I every reasi n for be lieving that the present break tn pclcea will be quickly recovered. Every one Is looking for the largest attendance nf feeder buyers of the year for the week to come, that be ing Ak-8ar-Ben week when the city Is al ways full of strangers from the surround ing country. It would therefore look like the part of wisdom for would-be buyers to get their order In this week. The supply of fat sheep and lambs this morning was limited and while tbe ten dency of the market on fat attiff I lower In sympsthy with the breaka at Chicago. Ih supply st this point of desirable killers has been so small that the market on that kind haa not ahown o much change. No. Av. Pr.
