N'EW TORK. Sept. 25-The market l
held under dull depression for the most
part today, but this Influence was con
tested and was not allowed to make much'
headway In affecting prices until the selling
of Amalgamated Copper to realise broke
the whole market In sympathy.
Immediate active factors were not an
Influence on the market so much as the
belief thst the condition of the money
market would become an active factor In a
shoit time ngaln. Kates for call loans fell
below 6 per cent early In the day and condi
tions In that department of the loan market
offered no sign of disturbance. Neverthe
less, the expectation Is quite general that
the preparation for the October , settle
ments will Involve a flurry In the money
market. The requirements then are un
usually heavy and money Is undeniably
tight In all departments. The universal
confidence that the secretary of the treaa.
ury Intends to extend aid Lithe onlv assur
ance felt against a sevtrt pinch, confidence
has been very strong In Wail stp-et that
the usual recourse to stock market liquida
tion for relief from such a situation was
to be escaped,
escape commltm
amongst those w
prevniled. That
so sure of exempt!
sure was Indicated
selling movemen
or the aesslon. The sums to be Da
next Monday In dividends and Interest wi!
be large. The l.'nlon Pacific semi-annual
6 per cent dividend and the Southern Pa
cific 2 per cent dividend alone will call
for nearly I16.000.000 and the aggregate of
such payments on that date la estimated
at 3i0,uoo,000 or more. In addition, the New
York trust companies will be called upon
to Increase their cash holdings on October 1
to the extent of IIO.OOO.OOO. There was no
relaxation in the demand making upon New
York bank reservea from Interior sources
and an unusual amount of re-dlscountlng
from Interior banks is being offered to New
York banka. The amount of new gold
secured abroad for New York fell today to
a meagre $2u0,000. The atock market settle,
ment In London revealed high carrying
charges and discrimination against Ameri
can securities in that market. In Paris the
private discount rate advanced to within
a ahada of the bank rate and the weekly
statement of the Imperial Bank of Ger
many ahowed the continued strain upon the
money market at' that center.
The compilation of the reports of condi
tions of the national banks throughout the
United States as of September 4, given
out at Washington today, shows clearly
that the Inflation of credits Is common to
the whole country. The percentage of
legal reserve to liabilities on that date Was
20.80, as compared with 21.44 on June 18.
the date of the preceding report of the
controller, and with 21.69 on August 26, the
nearest corresponding date of last year.
Politics came In for some consideration
In the market by reason of the Sessions of
the New York party conventions. Traders
made a special demonstration against the
municipal corporatlona of New York on
this score. The dividend increase on Ana
conda conformed closely to the general
expectation. But the heavy realising in
that stock and In Amalgamated Copper had
a bnd effect on general speculative senti
ment as showing a disposition to sell on
good news In a stock that Is regarded aa
a speculative favorite of the group of capi
talists most relied upon to carry through
the present speculative campaign. This
broke the whole market and led to violent
declines and a weak and active closing.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par

CATTLE Yesterday's very large run of
cattle was followed by another heavy run
today. The receipts this morning were
the heaviest of any Tuesday since the first
week of the month. .The arrivals consisted
largely of range cattle, with only a small
sprinkling of beef.
There was a fair demand for fat steers
that would do for killers and the market
on the desirable kinds waa generally steady
with yesterday; in fact, the market aa a
whole did not show any very material
change In any direction. The trade was
naturally slow, aa a very considerable pro
portion of the receipts did not arrive until
late in the forenoon.
Cows and heifers were In liberal supply,
the estimate being sixty cars of that aind
of cattle. The proportion of cow stuff waa
not as large yesterday as anticipated and
buyera aemed a little mora anxious for sup
plies, with the result that they put back
on at least part of what they took oft
yesterday. In other words, the cow mar
ket waa strong to a little higher than yes
terday. Stockers and feeders were In very large
supply, which In connection with the heavy
run of yesterday and rha further fact that
the country demand proved aomewhat
larger than anticipated, made the market
today weak and slow. Some of the best
cattle aold to pretty good advantage, but
the general market on stockers and feedera
waa right at 10c lower and slow at ths de
cline. Representative sales:

HOOS There wss a fair run of hogs for
a Tuesday, but several of ths tralna were
late In arriving at the yards. The trad
opened with good loads In fs'r demand and
although it was by no means active, the
market waa steady to a little stronger In
spots. It would be hsrdly possible to llm.t
ths strength to sny particular one kind of
hogs. Some good light loads sold stronger
and others just as good no more thin
steady. Heavy hoga In some cases also
showed strength, while In other cnse
heavy loada sold at barely ateady prices.
Whatever strength there was dlsappearel
toward the close, when It was not possible
to get over steady prices at the best.
Heavy hogs, especially those on the tout. h
order, were poor sellers, especially towa.d
the close, and a good many of them sh wetl
a decline of fully 6c as compared with
yesterday.

SHEKP Chicago Is the disturbing els
ment In the sheep trade at the present time
and unfortunately shippers are contribu
ting to their own loss by sending so many
sheep and lambs to that maiket. Last
week the market at this point held up ex
ceedingly well in suite of the biar break at
Chicago. Buyera here in the face of large
receipts stood up to the rack and loo
everything delivered here at prices that
were entirely satisfactory to shippers, in
stead of letting well enough alone, shippers
started In this week by flooding Chicago,
the receipts at that point yesteidsy bring
estimated at 45.000. The result was that
that market yesterdsy was Hfll5c lower,
and with a liberal run again this morning
buyers up there took off another good slice.
While all the conditions at this point yes
terday morning were favorable for lower
prices, the demand waa so good that the
market finally turned out Junt about ateady
with the previous week. Moie than that,
the receipts of 107 csrs were practically ail
cleaned up before the close. That, too, in
the face of the reported decline at Chi
cago, This morning, with a still further
break at Chicago, buyera began to think
It time to lower their hands here, with the
result that while some sales looked steady,
ths general market was 10316c lower, and
In some cases possibly more than that was
taken off for the two days.
No one anticipates any very great break
In prices or one that win be permanent.
On the contrary, as soon as shippers re
duce their consignments to Chicago tne
market is more than likely to spring bsck
to where It was In the beginning. Hence
It would look like a very good time for
country buyers to get In their orders whl.e
the market is showing some little weak
ness. Aa showing how strong feeders feel, at
tention might be called to the fact that the
millers who are among the biggest feeders
In the country paid ii.90 for another big
string of the Gibson Wyoming lambs.
