Veto.
Mayor Macrae will return without hla
official signature the lighting contract with
tha Cltliens' Gas and Electric company,
passed at the meeting of tha city council
last Monday by a vote of six to two That
this was hla Intention wss stated by Mayor
Macrae last evening. As the city council
does not meet In regular session until
October 1, Mayor Macrae stated ha Would
on Monday Issue a call for a special meet
ing Tuesday night at which time he will
return unsigned the contract, with his
reasons for so doing.
At the meeting last Monday night when
the contract waa approved and the mayor
Instructed to sign It by a vote of six to
two, Mayor Macrae's remarks Indicated
that he would refuse to attach his official
signature to the document and would leave
It to the council to pass It over his veto,
if It saw fit to do so.
Mayor Macrae takes the same position
ss Councilman- Wallace, which is that In
his opinion Council Bluffs should not pay
more per arc lamp for Its public lighting
than Omaha dors. The recent conference
between President Nash of the . lighting
company and Mayor Macrae, the latter
stated laM evening, had not tended to In
duce him to change hla opinion and con
sequently he would decline to sign the
contract.
Whether the six councllmen. Fleming,
Hendrlx. Knudsen, Maloney, Smith ,snd
Tounkerman, will stand by their vote .of
last Monday and pasa the contract over
the mayor's veto remains to be seen.
Councilman Knudsen stated yesterday when
apprised of the mayor's Intention to veto
the contract that to data no one had con
vinced him that he had erred In voting
for the measure and Intimated that unless
be changed hla mind before Tuesday night
he would certainly vote the same as he did
last Monday. The other five councllmen.
It was stated last evening, had decided to
stand pat and vote for the contract.

The A. E. Hunter company, the big dry
goods firm on Pearl and Main streets,
closed its doors last night at the end of
the day's business and will not' reopen them
until Saturday morning next, at which time
a closing out sale will be begun and con'
tinned until the entire stock is disposed of.
The reason for the firm deciding to go
out of business ' I primarily doe to' the
enforced retirement from business of John
Beno on account of continued til health
Unable longer to give the business sny at
tention owlnf to his physical condition Mr;
Beno decided to dteposw of his interest
In the firm. W. A. Maiirer, not being as
he terms It'a "dry goods msn," ' decided
thst he did not care to continue In the
business without Mr.' Beno, and Mr. Hunter,
the third member of the flfm, although' "h
could secure th financial backing requisite
to continue the business'; also decided 'that
without Mr. Beno he did not desire to go
on with It. ' ' '
The business was originally started by
Woodbury it Culver. Later Mr. Woodbury
bought out Mr. Culver and formed a' new
company known as the' W;"Q." Woddb'ury
company. About a year ago John Beno,
W.' A. Maurer of this city and a third party
bought out Mr. Woodbury,' and shortly
after Mr. Hunter Joined the firm, the name
of which was then changed to that of the
A. B Wunter company. '

Rev. Lnther M. Walters. D. D., who has
been called here from Los Angeles, Cal.,'
on account of the serious Illness of his son,
E. II. Walters' of the firm of Walters
Wadsworth. and exalted ruler of the Coun
Vu Bluffs I rid (re of Elks, was pastor of the
Broadway Methodist church of this city
during the years 1177, 1S7I and 1R79. The
visit of Dr. Walters to the city recalls a
memorable Incident In the history of the
Broadway church. The' ch'urch during Dr.
Walters' pastorate was heavily encumbered
with debt and h decided before leaving
his charge here to clear off this debt. By
a purely personal campaign ftevi Walters
succeeded lit raising the entire amount and
th lifting of the debt was celebrated .In'
a unique manner ' Permission wa's granted
Dr. Walters to erect 'an Immense tent on
the court house grounds snd there on Sun
day morning In July, 1879. with Bishop
Andrews presiding, the mone was jjou'red
In by those contributing snd announcement
made Of the lifting of the debt which i had
embarrassed the congregation for fifteen
years. The remarkable ' feature of ' Dr.
Walters' successful campaign In raising
ths money needed to rift the debt was' that
at least two-thirds of the money was ob
tained from persons outside the Methodist
church and this fact was clearly dem
onstrated at the mass meeting In the tent.
The gathering was a remarkable one, no
less than forty ministers of all denomina
tions from the surrounding territory being
present to assist In the celebration.
Ill health compelled Dr. Walters to go to
California about eight -years ago and al
though now on the retired list he Is still
active and performs a large amount -of
work In connection with . th Methodist
church.. .
