The selling pressure on the market was not heavy at any time during the day and xll offerings were easily absorbed. The heaviest selling was by houses with north western connections. The shipments from Argentina were reported as being less than one-fourth of those of last week and one-sixth of those for the same timo last year. Reports from England wore that the Russian area In which famine pre vailed Is Increasing. Rcoelpts In the northwest were reported light and are now, from August 1 to date, over 1,'iUO cars lees than for the same period last year. Dispatches from the southwest were to the effect that good wheat wu scarce and that there is barely enough to supply the milling demand. In addi tion to these Influences cash wheat was strong, both at Minneapolis and Kansas City. December wheat opened IUtiO higher, at 78o, sold between 72W7i?o and closed firm, at 78 4c Clearances of wheat and flour were qual to ttOS.&OO bu. Primary receipts were 1,067,000 bu., against 977,000 bu. for the same day last year. Minneapolis, Puluth and Chicago reported receipts of 74! cars, against 2S4 cars last week and 816 cars a year ago. The corn market today was -dull and prices kept within a nurrow range. Com mission houses and local traders were fair sellers, but all offerings were met with a good demand and the market held about even. December opened unchanged, at 4tC, sold between 42 He and 4 2 He and closed steady, at 42Hc. Local receipts were 602 cars, with 807 cars of contract grade. There was much realizing today In the oats market and prices were somewhat depresepd. Commission houses, however, were fairly good buyers of the May option, which tn large degree steadied the market. The firmness of wheat and some covering by shorts also prevented a further de cline. Trading was not heavy. December oats opened 4,0 tc higher, at 82 Tt Qa. sold between 82 Vic and 88c and closed steady, at 32ts482Hc. Local receipt were 172 cars. The room frSdlnS elpmenr Wna alrfirttlcal tt tK. ket and put otit short Mnes cn the advances. t ne principal operations centered In the coalers, especially In Readlna. Much of he activity in that stock waa attributed to a long standing pool. Rumors to ac count for the movement revived reports of an Intended divestment of ownership of coal properties by the railroad companies. This report has reappeared at Intervals, ever since the publication of a judical de cision, wnicn seemed to Indicate the Illegality of the present ownership of the means of production for the material transported as freight by the coalers". De tails were not forthcoming of the rlan, but the speculative snsumptlon waj trTat large profits would accrue to the railroad com panies from the proceeds of the new sr rangement. The rise In the coalers on this assumption was In contrast to the former favorable effect on those storks of the tak ing over of coal mining properties. Other stocks which were notable strong had special causes assigned. There were some conspicuous gaps In the line of advanc ing prices ana some recent leaders were held back throughout the day. The 6 per pent dividend came off the price of Union Pacific and Instead of attracting demand there seemed to be selling bv those who had held only until the dividend should scorue to them. A number of Industrials figured In the dav's advances on develnn. ments In the special trades In which they inieresiea or in the arrairs or the corporations themselves. Estimates Of the hnnlr abatement nnlnteil to a favorable return tomorrow and this was held to encourage the speculation. The Increase In cash for the week was estimated to be In the neighborhood of I15.ono.000. The subtreasury operations In clude the payments of recent gold engage ments abroad, except today's payment of II. 775.000. which brings the total payments on that account for the week up to 319. 159,000. But receipts of revenue payments and for telegraphic transfer to Interior paints and other routine subtreasurv on- eratlona leave the payments by that In stitution to the banks atMn!y 315,029,000, There la a small offset to this gain In the movement on balance to the Interior, which la estimated at but a few hundred thou sand dollars, compared with over 85.000.000 last week. This relaxation In the Interior demand for currency contributes much to ine prom i sea strength of tomorrow s bank statement The further advance In the sterling exchange rate today decreased the command by New York on gold In London. Attention was given to a report also of a seml-offlclnl statement of the un willingness of the Bank of France to re lease gold for shipment to New York. A fan in sterling exchange at Paris today, lessened the prosoect of gold moving from that center to London, which has been canvassed with an Indirect method of renewing supplies available to the New York demand. The late flurry In money was attributed to the preparation for some large dividend payments due tomorrow, the Principal of which Is the 3H.000.nm) payable io mnnaara stncKnomers. Packers, however, could not sea It that way and as a rule were not willina tn nay more than steady prices. Possibly a few of the more desirable loads may have sold a little bet ter thsn yesterday, but the general run of the hots were hardly more than steady In fact, on somerof the less desirable load the market was easier and tt closed dull and weak. As will be noted from the sales below, hoars sold very largely at 35.wt74.10, the same a yesterday, -but the top today was dc nigner. v Hots have sold considerably higher all this week than last The advance at the close of last wsek was not only maintained but prices firmed up, so that by Thursday the market was 10c higher on an average than at . the cloae of the previous week In fact, for two days hogs have sold At the highest point touched since August 30. The total for the week to date foota up about the same as for the corresponding days of last month. The most of the arrivals today consisted of lambs and the trade, as a whole, was very slow. It looked as If packers hud already secured about all the lambs that they needed to kill out this week and Hence were not In need of additional auu- plles. Accordingly, they made very little effort to buy, so that today's market waa dull and weak from Hart to finish. Th fact is the fat lamb market I 15c and tn some cases kc lower than last week. There were no fat sheeu here of any con sequence, but the feellna was lust about steady for the day. The market on good killers l not very much lower (or tne week lo-tlSc would easily cover all th decline that ha taken Dlace. Considering how late It is in the woek there were a good many feeder buyer lien- many of them having waited several day to secure something that would suit their ideas regarding quality and price, the re suit was that th feeder market today waa fully steady with yesterday. Feeders paid as high as 14.76 for feeding ewes, which is th best price paid so far.
