While throwing horseshoes for points a
day or so ago; Harold Smith, living on
Mill street, was struck by one of the shoes
thrown by George Templeton. one of the
youthful players. A deep gash was cut In
young Smith's head and for a while he waa

Porter will be the next governor of Iowa.

what was advertised as a "grand tourna
ment of sporting events" to be held Sun
day at th Union Driving park. According
to th big posters placed about town there
was to be a shoot In the morning, horse
races, automobile races and a base ball In
the afternoon. There will, however, be no
horse races as Mayor Macrae and Chief

stand for horse racing, for purses on the

When the affair waa first planned, it
was the understanding of Mayor Macrae
and Chief Richmond that It merely In

of the club, but when the big posters an
nounced that running races with "liberal
purses" were to be features of the day'

executive and the chief of police resulted

races for purse went In Council Bluffs on

Probating of Old Will.
Twenty yeara ago the will of William
Bauerkemper waa filed for probate In the
district court, but It wss not until yester
day that It. was admitted to probate on
application of the widow, to whom the
entire estate had been left and who had
been named as executrix under th instru
ment. The will, dated December t. 188. bore the
signature of William Bledentopf, Frederick
Sperling and Hermann Kracht, aa witnases.
All three have elnce died and It waa neces
sary before the will could be admitted to
probate yesterday that the signatures of
the three witnesses be identified. Peter
Tholl testified to the signatures of Slenden
topf and Kracht, while Henry . Sperling
testified to thst of hi father, Frederick
Sperling.
At the time the will was filed J. J. Shea
wss clerk of the district court. Th
record show thst notice of publication
wa mads In regular form In th sine
defunct Council Bluffs Globe, but for some
reason the proceedings stopped there and
no effort waa made to have th will ad
mitted to probate until a few day ago
when the widow filed her application.

At a meeting of the street fair and car
nival committee yesterday report shewed
that the attendance this year waa larger
than that of any previous fair. The com
mittee is not yet la a position to knew
what the receipts and dlsbureementa for
this year will amount to, as there ar still
some collections to make and some bills
to pay. There I every reaaoa te believe,
however, that th profit will be aatlafac
tory and compare favorably with thoae of
former year. This was th Brat year the
fair was var. held without soliciting eoa-
trihutlon from business melt and other.
A detailed statement of every Itenf of re
ceipt and expense t 'being prepared by
th committee and when completed and
audited It will be published. At previously
announced the money, derived from th
street fair and carnival, sfter certain pay
ment to charitable and other organisation.

A .settlement waa reached In the blstrlct
court yeaterday before the case was
brought to trial In the' suit of Mrs. Emma
L. Norman against John A. Norman, her
husband. By the terms of th settlement
Mr. Norman I to have the ownership of
the homestesd at 183 Fifth avenue and
ll.OOft In cash by October 1. If the cash
Is not forthcoming by that date Mrs. Nor
man will be given a Judgment for the
amount against the ' husband farm . In
Mill county, upon which attachment pro
ceedings were brought about a year ago.
If the settlement Is earned out by the time
ststnd the pending suit Is to be dismissed.
John A. Norman is the father of J. O.
Norman, who committed suicide a few day
ago by drinking carbolic acid. About a
year - ago John A. Norman left Council
Bluffs for the ostensible purpose of making
a trip to Portland.' Ore., to- visit the ex
position. 'Instead he Is said to have gone
to his fomer homa. lit Sweden. Hla wife
haa, it I said, heard from him since he
left here. A niece who made her home
with Normans until Mrs. Norman became

Dickinson, the Des Moines Insurance man
charged with complicity In the death', of
Miss Irene Blydenburg of Eldors. wns
taken this afternoon at I o'clock before
Justice of the Peace F. -B.- Duncan en a
charge of murder In the second degree,
the Information being signed by the girl's
brother. Frank Blydenburg. The bond waa
fixed at 1ft. flOO. . which ' ha tailed to give,
though It la Intimated It may be furnished
later. The preliminary hearing was con
tinued to. September 21
Dickinson wss arrested In Corning. Ia.,
late last night, and was brought . to Des
Molnea. reaching this city at 8 this morn
ing, in ' company, with Sheriff Maxon of
Adams county, who made the arrest.
Dickinson wa at once taken te the police
station and locked up for the night. At
the Union depot hla attorneys, Walter Mc-
Henry snd G. R, Sanderson, sttempted to
see him,, but the detfctlves refused and
trouble nearly followed, DUkluson being
driven away In the patrol wagon while his
attorneys shouted after him not to talk.
Proceedings further In the case were
started this morning when at I o'clock
the grand Jury subpoenaed witnesses In
the esse and began an Investigation. The
coroner will cause a second post mortem
examination to be made tomorrow. Letters
written by Wckinson ta Miss Blydenburg
were given to the police department. One
of there letters fixed July I at Marshall-
town as a meeting place between the two
and It Is the claim of the police .that the
girl's ruin was accomplished there at that
time. Thus fsr Dr. Gadd and Dr. Maple,
who attended the girl, have not been' ar
rested and may not be. It Is admitted
that Dr. Msple wss not called In on the
case till-Thursday of last 'Week 'and that
the girl had been to him and asked him
to relieve her, and that ha refused, but
admitted , that he told the girl how It
might be don by hetself and promised to
treat her afterward if she were success
ful. H. B. Dickinson, the Insurance man,
has a wife and two children In this city.

the republican party.' The occasion Is on

republican party. The governor has pot
had time to prepare a manuscript of the
address, but It is understood that he will
not touch on any of the Issues of th
campaign, but will deal entirely with the

trial of H. C. Dye for uttering a forged
Instrument was begun yesterday In the dis
trict court and most of ths day waa con

was made up by his father and other
wealthy relatives, but six indictments were
