T GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET General Dtwawtrd Trend of Fricel li tbeokti CLOSE IN WHEAT HtARLY A CENT HIGHER Inr Said to B Looklaa: tp, vrltk Largo Sale for Forelga aad DnaMlle TradeCora ( Oats Firm. OMAHA. Sept. 13. 1906. The wheat- market tiok a turn for the better today, prices ruling firm and clos ng nearly a cunt t.igner. There wm not much wheat for sale and It required only a light demand to strengthen the market. Cables were higher, cash demand was re ported better aJd receipts In the northwest were lighter town expected. The Hour sit uation is said to be getting better, with large sales both for foreign trade and do mestic ronaumptlon. Bailment seems to be changing to ths bull aide. Corn was firm, although prices showed a very narrow range. Receipts were about as expected, and the weather was favor able. The strength In oats had something to do with the firmer feeling In corn. Primary wheat repelpts were 823.000 bu. and shipments 134,000. bit., against re. calpts last year of 1,047,000 bu and ship ments of SlUOOO bu. Corn receipts were 614, 00 bu and shipments 181.000 bu., against receipts last year of 405. 090 -bu. and shipments of 600.000 bu. Clearances .were 141,712 bu. wheat, 60,200 bbla. flour, 2t.t7 bu. corn and 43.840 bu. oata. Liverpool closed unchanged to Hd higher on wheat, and ktjpfed higher on corn. " Broocnhall eatlmates Argentina ship ments at 400,000 bu.' wheat and 1,000,000 bu. corn.''1 The following la from Mr. Rycroft, who Is In Duluth: "Threshing returns, as a whole, are satisfactory. There are few complaints v and they principally ' come from ths Red River valley. The grading here Is very good. Export demand la alow, the only Inquiry being for durum and Manitoba. Movement Is up to the full capacity of the railroads right now, on all grains." - The following from Schaack: "The nofth West keeps sending down a lot of bull dope about how much tholr crop has been over estimated and- lot of other stuff along the same lines, bat If you notice, the selling has all been by northwest houses this morning, and this makes one think thoy are trying to make us make a market to ell on. as they certainly cannot taks care of It themselves.''. . Ths market opened strong and higher, ' ohieflly because of wet weather in die - taorthweat and rsports from that section of poor returns from threshing. The demand ' was aotlve and ths offerings were scarce. Cables 1 were stronger on less favorable Hews from Russia and the Argentina ship- - menta ware -reported to be very malr. The strength ef corn and oats was also a -factor, when the price of December wheat ' reached 72Ho, trade slackened considerably and the market was comparatively life less tor soma time, just Deiore me close, however, a prominent local house com. toenood to buy and this drove shorts to cover in a curry, under this Influence December advanced to 1Za and closed . strong,- close to the top. Duluth and Chicago 1 reported receipts of 736 cars, against 330 cars last week and 677 cars a yser ago. ' The corn market was steady all day. being Helped materially by the firmness In other pits. The absence of froat damage ..and the possibility that wet weather may interfere with the movement of the crop were faotors for higher prices. Cash ' "markets were firm. The volume of trade waa small and there was no pressure upon the market. December corn opened HwWo to 8o higher at 42H8taV5, sold between 4Mt and 41TAo and . closed firm at 42ie. Local receipts . war 431 cars, with 100 ef contract grade. The oata market was strong all day and closed Ho higher. Local reoeluta were 164 cars. The provisions market was fairly aotlve all day and the demand Is attributed to a ' desire to discount a probably heavy ran ; trade. ACTIVE OPENING FOLLOWED BY DUUNESt Raying; by Sherte Falls. Off aad Closlaar Prices Are Lowest of Day Call Moaey Rate Lower. NEW YORK, Sept. It There were Indi cations In the day's stocks movement of a growing nulescence In the speculation on the part of large operators, whose powerful resources have kept the recent market go ing through all vicissitudes of the money dltilrultlea. Fluctuations were uncertain and dealings had the appearance of pro fessional operations of tne trading class. The upward movement was brisk at the outset In continuation of yesterday s sharp recovery. But It flattened out before Ion and the market lapsed into a duller condi tion than for many weeks past. The de mand from the abort Intereat fell ciff con siderably with the reduction in that ac count, with covering operatlona. and the market showed the lack of this technical factor of strength. This gsve rise to an inference that yesterday s sdvance waa a professional movement designed to drive In the shorts rsther than a resumption of Important operations on the long side. The reaction of the first of the week was evi dently caused by the reduction In holdings taken on In the course of the supporting measures during the stringent money mar ket of the week before and this selling In cidentally encouraged the putting out of short contracts which were covered yester day and this morning. The narrowing pro cess going on in the market by this series of movements Is easily perceptible and to day's later market confirmed the showing. The professed motives for operations In special atocks also showed the Increase of the professional element In the msrket with its revived deal rumors and dividend prospects. , The money market continued to realise and call bonds were made throughout the day at below per cent. The Bank of England advanced its official rate to 4 per cent, but the advance 01 a run 1 pr ctmi to i per cent was considered possible, and the more moderate action was uuwn nentivelv favorable. Further gold was withdrawn from the bank for shipment to New York, but this was believe to be on an engagement made yesterday and It waa supposed that tne New lora commana 01 the bank's supply of gold is now checked. A letting down In the price of gold In Lon don was viewed as a sign of the security felt against Immediate rurtner taxings. Neither was there any engagements of gold announced In Paris for New York ac count. The falling away in tns local mnnev rata has led to the retirement of some of the credits of interior banks which were placed here to take advantage 01 tne high money rate. New York exchange at Chicago also supped nacK 10 a imtui un count today. The continued movement of ourrenev to the interior and withdrawals of money for revenue payments to the gov ernment ere n be Went In view as offsets to the week's receipts of foreign gold. Some restraint on tne BDecuiation was uue 111 the further uncertainty In the money out look. Confidence Is maintained, however. In the certainty of relief measures by the Treasury department against any harmful money stringency by eoms 01 tns means at command for releasing surplus treasury funds to the market, nellef In a 00m Inr Increase In the Ana conda dividend lifted Amalgamated Copper sharply and the Great Northern ore land deal was a reviving Influence on the Hill atnnka and on ITnlted Btates Steel. The lat ter fell back under" the enormous weignt nf the Mlllna- to about 47 and the following heavy tone In the market waa srteciea oy sympathy with this obstacle. There waa huvinff or union fiino on tne aaeurnDiion that with the 6 per cent dividend off the price tomorrow buying would be attracted. The failure to follow up In the buying on the advance prompted tne late selling movement, which wiped out the early gains and established prices below last nirnt'S level. Bonds were Irregular; total sales, par value, 11.146.000. United Btates bonds were unchanged on call. The following was the range of prices on the New York Stock exchange: ales. Mlga. Low. Hms. Among the receipts wss quite a sprinkling of trash, so that the total offer Inga of really desirable cattle of all kinds were not very large. Oood cornfed cattle were In active de mand and sold very freely at good, strong prices. Ths fact Is that cornfed cattle of the kind that Is selling from 16.60 upwards have been gradually firming up this week and are In some cases ss much as 10a higher than last wsek. Among the cattle today were some good enough to bring 16.20. There were no very good range beeves among the offerings, but there was good Inquiry and the feeling on that kind Ts also strong. Cows and heifers were anywhere from strong to 10c higher thsn yesterday, or 26t 4c higher than the low point last week. Cows snd heifers are now selling almost as high as at the best time. Desirable weighty feeders continue' In good demsnd at good, 'strong prices. The supply of that kind of cattle is still un equal to the demand and arrivals all this week have met with very ready sale. In ferior kinds of both stockers and feeders continue to be a drug on the market. Representative sales: BEEF STEERS. Mo. 1 t It 1 10 tt M Tl 11 II n Av. Pi, We. II..., 11... I... to... Some of the trains were Iste In srrlvlng snd most of the stuff came In mixed, so thst there was a great deal of sorting to be done. This made the market a little late in getting started, but there waa s fair movement when the stuff was finally annpeo. up ready to be shown, Fat shreep and lambs sold lh alwut the out the k..i . same notches ss yesterday, there fair demand for desirable kinds of killers. V: .!:.. The market on that kind of stuff openel quite early, sheep and yearling being the first to sell, so that the beat nf the offer Inga changed hands In reasonable sessnn. Fat lambs opened slow, with the feeling generally weak and most every one, both buyers and sellers, waa predicting a lower lamb market right from the start. The demand for fat lambs, for some reason or other, does not appear to be as brisk as usual, packers being very moderate buvers. There Is some talk that the prevailing high prices have lessened the consumption at eastern points to such an extent that not at many lambs are required to fill current orders as was the esse a few weeks ago. Hence packers are buying more sparingly. As the receipts. at all points continue quite liberal, It la only natural that there should be s weak undertone to the market. There were a good many fat sheep and lambs, especially lambs In the yards, this morning. Whlls there did not sppear to be such a large number of buyers present ss during the first half of the week, stilt there was a very fair demand, especially for sheep, which sold quite freely at stesdy prices. Some more breeding ewes of good quality, but heavy weights, sold at 15.25. The lack of ansp to the market on fat lambs, together with the fact that feeder lambs are generally considered as very high, made buyers in some cases hesitate a little this morning and the feeder lamb market was undoubtedly weak In spots. BtlH, the market was not very different from yesterday, and some ssleamen thought they secured fully as good prices as any time, While buyers did not sppear In any great hurry, still they kept taking the stuff and before they got through there waa very little left. Among the tales to day was a double deck of Nebraska lambs, the poorest that have been seen In the yards In a great white, at 61.75.
