OMAHA. September 10, 1500.
Th wheet market waa weak early, tha
opening being oft i0V) from Saturday's
close. Shorts oovered a little, and trade
was to light that prices rallied somewhat
and bald steady moit of the session, the
does being e below Saturday for Decem
ber and HQ lower for September. Lower
cables and favorable domestic crop, nsws
were bearish Influences, while receipts were
large at all points, especially In the north
west, where the spring wheat movement
is well under way. Cash prices there
were off a cent. Many were Inolined to
await the government erop figures, which
will be issued this afternoon.
With' large receipts and favors ble
weather, coin" prices were off at the open
ing, declining gradually until at the close
ueierred futures were off fee. . The beartsti
tendency u checked by the inclination
of shorts to even up and await the govern
ment report.
Primary wheat receipts were 1,303. iC
bushels and shipments 840,000 bushel,
against receipts last year of l.uo.Ow busn
els and shipments of 617,00 bushels. Corn
receipts were aiil.000 bushel and shipments
718.0uo bushels, against receipts laul year
f 7M.O0O bushels and shipments of SIJ.OUO
bushels. Clearances were tt-'.VO bushtis
wheat, 8,000 barrels flour, lu9,770 bushels
corn and 13,000 bushels oats..
and H1 lower on corn.
W'lest visible Increased 115,000 bushels,
orn Increased - 673,009 bushels, oats In
creased M.OuO bushels. World's shipments
were 9.800,000 bushels, being large from Rus
sia and ths Danube.
This wire cams from Minneapolis: "The
current receipts of new spring wheat here
and northwest are of very ordinary qual
ity. Indicating either a low agerage for
the total crop or that the spring wheat
farmer is selling his low grade whoat
first In view of the fact that he Is gen
erally. proierou and has several other
crops that are bridging relatively higher
and could be sold first, there is a growing
belief that spring wheat may not movo
as rapidly as had been predicted. This
week should, however, be an excellent
test of this. The weather has been the
finest .Imaginable .for over a week, and
there bav been reports of much thresh
ing of shocked wheat nd direct hauling
to country stations." .

Week
NEW YORK, Sept. 10 The strength In
today market was spotty and Intermittent
and wit a disappointment to the speculative
element, who counted on an advance be
cause heavy buying was evident on Satur
day after the appearance of the bank state
ment with Its formidable showing of a
deficit of 8e.6TX.noo below the legal reserve.
Events occurred today In about the way
they were expected to as a bssls of the
strong closing of the stork market on
Saturday. But the stork market reepomwt
todaj' was moderate and the ranks of tlu)
advancing stocks rather a ragged one.
There was evidently a good deal ef realising
folng on In stocks that were bought -an
aturdny and this added to the impression
that Saturday's buying wss for purposes
of support rather than for accumulation.
Erie. Reading, United States Steel, Amal
gamated Copper and the Transcontinental
group were all Under more or less pressure.
The effect upon foreign money snd stock
markets of the heavy demand or New Vera
for gold hnd Its Influence In checking speeu
letive excess here. There was. much eon
fuslnn also In estimating the exact amount
of gold actually secured owlnr to the possi
ble duplication of announcements by the
prlvfite banks making engagements and the
nations! banks acting for them, and to
which alone the privilege of holding gov
ernment deposits against the gold engage
ments applies under the treasury order.
It became evident early In the dny, how
ever, thnt the minimum rate of Saturday
on today's movement, which was 31.0rO.0no,
was exceeded. Call money loaned as high
as 10 per cent esrly In the day, but ran off
to the neighborhood of 6 per cent before
the principal money operations were con
cluded, rising again to 11 per cent at the
last. As an offset to last week's cash loss
by the banks of over 8l,000.fl00. the day's
gnm engagements wers not ruliy adequate.
The new bank week starts with a with
drawal of nearly a million by the subtreas-
ury, ann mat institution was a creditor st
the clearing house establishment for nearly
half a million dollars. New York trust
companies have commenced the accumula
tion of rash to fill the addition reserve re
quirement in force October 1. and with the
movement of cssh to the Interior still In
force the restoration of New York bsnk re
serves to the legal requirement without
additional loan contraction seems proble
matical. The question thus Involved had Its
part in tne uncertain tone or stocits. Bo
did the forces of opposition to the Import
of gold whloh was emphasised in the rise
of discount rates in London, Paris and
Berlin and the advance of gold In London,
the rise of American eagles at the Bank of
England amounting to Is ftVfcf an. ounce.
interest attached to the official report of
the August output on the Rand which In
creased no less than 17,8.12 ounces over the
July production and reached a total of
609.115 ounces for the month. This rapid
Increase In the heavy output of South Afri
can goin promises larre new supplies to
meet the New York demand even though
the state foreign banks are Indisposed to
part with any of their present large hold
ings. The southern group, both In tha railroad
and Industrial list, were prominent amongst
tne sirong stncxs or tne aay. nut they did
not hold well after the apneaeanee of the
government cotton crop report. The large
Increase In earnings In the Atchison annual
report strengthened confidence In a coming
dividend Increase and speculative guessers
were liberal in their surmises of the ex
tent of the Increase, drawing an analogy
from the Union Pacific dividend. The late
rise In call money added to the unsettle
ment and helped to make the closing
Irregular.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par
value, 82.786,000. United States bonds were
unchanged on call.
The following was the range of price

CATTLE Receipts of cattle numbered
834, a against 36 on waek ago and 396
two week ago. Tha market as a whole did
not show very much change as compared
with the close of laat week.
In aplte of the large receipts of beef,
steers were In very good demand and any
thing desirable along that line commanded
steady prices. While the' trade was not
especially active th cattle kept selling,
both corn-feds and rangers, and tha most
of th offerings were dlspoaed Of In reason-
Ths supply of cows and belfers wss large
and the general market on all desirable
kinds fully steady. If anything, th moat
daslrable- sold a lltll stronger than last
week and In soma instances sellers thought
they secured a substantial advo.no on
something that buyers especially wanted.
As might be expected, the common and
Inferior grades were slow and weak.
Good feeders, having both quality and
weight, commanded fully steady prices.
The supply was not very large snd the
offerings were taken In reasons ble season.
On the othor hand, the light and common
klnda, even those having weight but lack
ing in quality, were slow and generally a
little lower than th close of laat week.
Speculators had quite a number of that
kind of cattle,: which they had been forced
to carry over from last Bsturday. Th
excessively hot weather' is drying up the
pastures In the country very rapidly and
buyers do not seem to care for much In the
stocker order. The only feeds that ar
selling freely are thoe which gr ready to
go on feed at one.
