AN ARCHITECTURAL WONDER
Window Arch la New Yerk Bank
BaildtatT, with a Spaa at
84.3 Feet.
The new building which Is being erected
for the Chemical National bank in Cham
bera street, with an entrance from Broad
way by meana of a low, narrow portal, will
have two or three architectural features
which will make It one ot the interesting
buildings of the city. If one walks down
Chambers street toward the Hudson he will
see a big window aroh forming one aide of
the dome which Is to cover the main part
of the building. This arch, one of the four
supporting the dome. Is said to be the
largest window arch which has been con
atructed In the city. The width of the
opening Is M.t feet. When the building Is
completed carry next year It will be found
that not a single' column rises from the
floor, the roof or dome being supported en
tirely by the walls at the corners. Ths
dome and Its supports may be compared
to a half orange, from which sections have
been cut off on each slds and the top and
then set on four matches.
In building the dome the architects took
that of St. Sophia sa an example, and
instead of having a double abell as most
domes have In order to give the building a
good external appearance, undertook the
task of making a dome with a single shell.
which should be ornamental. According
to the architects this style of dome reetlng
on four piers has never been used except
In SC Sophia's and at the Parts exposi
tion. The section sliced off from the top
will be filled with glsss in order to give
plenty of light. This roof of glass will be
eighty-four feet above the floor. The In
side diameter of the dome la sixty-eight
feet, the building being seventy feet square.
The ome of Bt. Sophia le 108 feet In
diameter Inside, snd that on the capltol
at Washington nlnetg-slx feet. The moot
expansive dome la the world is that of the
Pantheon at Roni. .- which measures 142
feet from perimeter across the center to
perimeter.
The architects bad great difficulty In find
ing a contractor who would undertake to
erect the dome. The contractor were afraid
to attempt to put It up In the way In
which It had been planned. One Arm
wanted ta build a permanent wall as high
as the top of the dome and suspend It
within. Finally a German engineer was
found who could work out the details, and
It-was erected. New York Tribune.
HARBORS OF BATTLE VARIETY
Notable Namker of Enclosed Hasina
that Make the Best Harbors
la the World. ..
If we take a trip around the world, over
the maps ot a good atlas, we shall find J&c
the geographical "bottle" la a very com
mon type of harbor the world over. The
coasts of Cuba show a succession of such
enclosed bays, Havana harbor being typi
cal. It often happen that nature herself
provides the corks also. In the shape of
Islands that almoat block up the entrance,
or at least block the view from the out
side. Such a cork , is Corregldor Island. In
Manila bay, or the rock Aleatrai - fortress
Just Inside the golden gate at San Fran
cisco and Smith .Cav occupies a similar
position In Santiago. -
The Annapolis basin, ' Nova Scotia,' - la
very typical among these geographical
bottles. A fslrly good map of thnt beauti
ful country will show a narrow gap on the
bay of Fundy side of tha peninsula. This
gap, known as - Dlgby. atrait. breaks
through a long ridge that the people cell
North Mountain. Through this break rush
the famous tides ot Fundy and fill up an
Inland basin of salt wster twenty miles
long and several In width. , The entrance,
from the outside, is mysteriously Invlsabla
to the landman's eye. To . a passenger
crossing the bay of Fundy from St. John
it seems as of the captain -were steering
his trim side wheeler head on Into a blue
mountain wall. , But at last , the forested
mountain opens and through the break
the Interior hills of Nova, Scotia close tha
distance. One can Imagine the tremen
dous tide race through, this Dlgby strait
when we know that the ordinary tidal rise
In this region la anywhere from forty to
seventy feet. It Is so great. In fact, that
the wharves at Dlgby are two-storied af
fairs, and people go aboard steamers from
the upper or lower story, according to the
height of the tide. .
New York harbor Is. In most resepcts, a
geographical bottle only it haa two mouth
Instead of one. Added to th principal
opening, the narrows, a sort of side' en.
trance Is provided by the East "River,"
leading out Into the sound.
The coast of Australia presents seversl
examples. of the geographical bottle, the
finest being the harbor of Melbourne. An
ordinary map shows this city located ap
parently upon a first rate harbor of tha
bottle type. Aa a matter of fact, the
bottle Is really there a , magntflcant en
closure of salt water fully thirty-five miles
across In either direction. Into this bsy,
called Port Phillip, there flows the Ysrra
river; and oddly enough, Melbourne, with
lt 500,000 people, hides Itself away nine
miles up this stream! Below the city the
river haa two sand bars which prevent tha
passage of large vessels. The heavy ocean
traffic, therefore, haa Its terminus In tha
bsy, whence the journey Is continued
town by rail. The explanation for thli
hla
awkard situation seems to be that In tha
early daya of Melbourne the one Idea of
the settlers was to build near aa might
be to the gold diggings. Bo up the river
the miners planted their settlement, never
dreaming that one day It would become a
resit metrnrmlla . ImnHinniul hehln.1 the
sanda of the Useless Yarra. ' '
Tt1o Janeiro has a splendid" enclosed haf
bor the best In all South America; better
far than the shallow "Lake" Maracalba;
which looks so Ideal upon tha map. ; Her
again at Rio we have a great-salt water
inlet, some seventeen ' miles across, com
municating with the ocean by a narrow
trait.
In nearly every ease these . natural
bottles are what the geographer calls
drowned rivers." That Is to say, - th
coastal lands In the vicinity have subsided,
allowing the sea to' flow In and convert
what was a lowland valley Into a partly
enclosed marine area..' Divers have gone
to the bottom of New York bay and have
found there the ancient bed of the Hudson
son river as that stream flowed before ths
mouthward part of Its valley subsided Into
the sea. The old bed reaehes through th
narrowa and well out Into the floor of tha
Atlantic Of course, as, the sea water
entered the sinking valley, any hills rising
thereabout would become islands Jn the
new order of things. And there we find
them to this day In almost any of these
enclosed Inlets. St. Nicholas Magazine.
