Deputy Sheriff Hurlbut was obliged to

posed as an inanimate object until bo
reached the county jail. There the deputy
lifted her out and carried ber into the In
sane ward, where she pursues the same
strange practice which have so alarmed
her relatlvea No noise alarms her, nor is
there any ruse which will surprise her mys
terious immobility. The girl seems as If
turned to atone and her muscles are tense
and hard to touch. When questioned or
asked to converse she remains silent, end
when food or nourishment Is offered her
no attempt Is made to partake of It, and
the physicians fear she will starve to death.

When Alonso Murphy of Newton, N.
set his favorite Plymouth Rock hen
two months ago, he placed under her a lot
of eggs purchased in the village and
which bore evidence of having been In
cold storage. Mr. Murphy was not at all
confident that cold storage eggs could bo
hatched, and he was agreeably surprised
when the old hen in due time came oS
with a brood of seventeen lovely little
chicks.
'The chickens grew rapidly, but it was
noticed that no feathers replaced the
down on their bodiea A close examina
tion showed that they were covered with
fur. It is Mr. Murphy's theory-that
through a wise and bountiful provision,
nature adapts all animate beings to their
environments.
The fur Is thick and glossy and of va
rious colore. The absence of feathers
prevents these remarkable young fowls
from attempting to fly, which Mr. Mur
phy considers a distinct advantage. In

The bullet entered ' Adams' stomach,
passed through his body and lodged in

gressman Thomas W. Bradley of Middle
ton, N. T.. to obtain a pension for Mrs.
Phoebe Oalnsford of Port Jarvis, who cele
brated her 101st birthday on June M.
Mrs. Oalnsford was a daughter of Jabes
Rockwell, a soldier In the revolutionary
war, and it is on this ground that a pen
sion is being sought. Mrs. Oalnsford is In
good health despite her great age. Mr.
Bradley Is preparing data referring to Mrs.
Oalnsford and her father and will submit
them to the authorities In Washington.

court of Pueblo, Colo., la In possession of
a unique "cross bill" filed In a divorce
court. The Judge even considers It classic ,
It la from the husband of a woman who
has filed a suit for divorce In Judge Voor

under date line of Albuquerque, N. M., an
signed Oscar Oreer. The card reads:
"Dear Judge: I noticed where my wife
that-used-to-be has applied for a divorce.
I promised her when I married her she
could have anything she wanted, so give
