the supply. and consequently the price of ell
deliveries made further declines. The

visions and resulted In moderate declines
In all products. The market displayed more

NEW YORK, Sept. I. Prices moved up
aggressively today to a strong closing after
the publics tlon of the bank statement show
ing a deficit below the legal reserves of
$ii,o77,926. This wss acoepted as an -e-presnon
of unimpaired confidence on the
part of the powerful speculators who have
the present market In hand of the ade
quacy of available resources to replenish
the deficient supplies of money and to
maintain the pricee of stocka In the market.
It is pointed out ss Justifying this confi
dence that upwards of 310,tiuQ.ti00 and pos
sibly more than $16.0no,00o will be available
to the New York market on Monday when
the order for deposit of government funds
against gold engagements goes Into ef
fect, these figures representing the esti
mates of the amounts of gold already se
cured for Import. It Is sdded that the
beneficent attitude of the treasury authori
ties to safeguard the money market against
harmful stringency may be assumed and
that means for Insuring this will remain at
the command of the treasury. This will
include the amount advanced against the
gold Imports which will be returned to the
treasury upon ths receipt of the gold and
will be available for use In either measure
for later relief. The feeling of confidence
on this score was byino means universal,
however, the amount of the deficit In bank
reserves proving rather staggering as com
ing on the threshold of ths annusl flow
of currency to the Interior from New York.
Not since the financial depreaalon of 1S&
have the bsnk figures shown such a deficit
when clearing house certificates were is
sued In New York during July and August.
Foreign stock markets were disturbed
today by New York's heavy requisition for
gold and discounts advanced In London
and Berlin, the rate In London rising above
the bnnk's official rate and foreshadowing
an advance by that Institution.
The week's outgo of $l,4O8,10n ch from
the banka measures fully up to the known
movements of money corrects the dis
crepancy In last week's statement and
leaves several million dollar still to be
accounted for.- it Is probable that New
York trust companies have begun to with
draw cash from the New York banks to In
crease their cssh reserves In compliance
with the law which requires them to hold
4 per cent of deposits in cash on October
1, compared with the 3 per cent required
after July 1. The Increased obligation will
call for an addition of about 810.000.4X10 to
rash holdings of the trout companies.
The market closed strong near the top.

ing and aa yesterday's supply was cleaned
up before the marVet closed there was
practically nothing In flrat hands with
which to make a maraet. The receipts
this week, aa will be noted from the
figures at head of column, have been con
siderably larger than laat week, but not
materially different from the record of a
year ago. While the big bulk of the ar
rivals has been made up of range cattle,
there has also been qul'.e a aprlnkllng of
corn feda. A feature of the week re
ceipts haa been the large run of range
cowa and heifers. .
The market on strictly choice beef steers,
both corn feds and rangers, has been Very
good sll the week and prices have shown
no material change. Ca'itle belonging to
big strings that have beitn coming during
the week have sold practically In the same
notches, every day. Among the arrivals
have been some right good killers, aa high
aa 36.10, being paid for rangers while the
top on corn feds was 36.40, ths highest price
stnee last November. Medium to common
kinds of rattle, owing to the large aupply,
have had a lower tendency and are any
where from 16ft26c lower than a week ago.
Corn fed rattle of the kind that have been
selling from 36 60 down r all lower.
This haa been the biggest week of the
season as regarde recelpta of range cows
and helfera. Over 100 cars of cattla of
that description have been on sale on some
days. I'nder the Influence of such sn s
ceptlonally large run prices declined very
rapidly and at the cloae of the week the
market on an average lis fully 26c lower,
and In spot as murh an 40c lower. The
teneral market might be described aa bite
iwer than it was two weeks ago. As
might be expected with price tending
downwsrd so rapidly Sndl the recelpta so
large, the trade on moat days was slow
and very much Inclined to dullneas, mak
ing it hard work for aaletmen.
The supply of feeders has been very
targe during the whole week, a eonalderable
proportion of the range ateers received
being too thin for beef. A the same tlm
there .were hsrdly enough strictly cJtolce
weighty dehorned feeders to fill require
ments of the market, with the result that
cattla of that description have been
fully ateady all the week, selling
anywhere from 84 .40 up to 84 60 for
the best. On the oiher hand light
cattle, unless It might be something ex
ceptionally gnnd. haa a lower tendency and
are at leaat lMi2f lower than last week.

have had the same experience, being gen
erally neglected.' the country seeming to

SHEEP There were no fresh receipts of
sheep today, the market being practically
bare as usual on a Saturday. The re
ceipts thla week have been very large, the
total amounting to slightly over 7,i head
as against 48,44 last week and H.M bead
a year ago. On Tueaday the receipts
footed up 27,572. which waa larger by sev
eral thousand head than any other market.
In tmlte of the very large receipts the
market at this point has been In exceed

prices generally strong. In fact It haa been

throughout the week and while the bulK of

Feeder buyers have learned by experience
that they csn secure the best feeding sheep
snd lambs at this point, while by going to
eastern markets they are very apt to secure
only what 'has been rejected at weatern
points and they are coining here in larger
numbers every yeara. It was a noteworthy
fact that thla week the .very largest feed. .
era In the whole country were in altendance
on thla market. With buying support of
this kind It Is not surprising that the
market has been strong and active all the
week In tbe face of extremely large re
ceipts. In apit of ths fact that packers seem to
feel that prices are high they have bought
everything coming, with sheep, as noted
above, fully ateady for the week. No
choice lambs have arrived during the week.
The beat seen her came In yesterday and
brought 17.40. The lambs coming to this
ftolnt'have been too light and the feeling
s that a right good bunch of, lambs weigh
ing sixty-eight pounds or upward would
sell readily at I7.80 or above.
