. P0'1 strength of Individual
stocks Later In the day there was a
comprehensive reaction. The decline was
attributed to the heavy cash losses which
the banks were shown by the preliminary
estimates of the week's currency move
ment to have suffered. A chilling effect
upon the confidence of speculative opera
tore of obtaining abundant means from
the treasury money market waa caused
by the strong terms of Secretary Shaw's
clrcu ar to national bank depositories.
wiem against putting out govern-
merit deposits. In their custody, in loan
thig-h rates of interest.
1 ne access to accounts of national banks
and the control of their conduct exer
cised by the Treasury department through
the comptroller's office, are believed to
offer a medium through which the head
department will be able to enforce his
Injunctions or to know whether they
have been observed, according to opinion
expressed In the Wall street district
amongst banks. That a general enforce
ment of the rules laid down by the secre
tary would greatly pinch the resources
now employed In sustaining the specula
tion In stocks Is clear. The possible re
suits 1o follow from the Inferences thus
suggested were not realised by holders of
stocks on margin with borrowed monev
and some speculative liquidation was
caused. The day's sub-treasury state
ment ahowed a small part of the earlier
takings 'of that Institution restored to the
hanks, but the loss for the week on that
account still stood at 34.434,000. while
estimates by the banks are of a loss of
cash to the Interior on the direct express
movement of rather more than the sub
treasury withdrawals. A decline In cash
reserves of 310.000,000, with last week's
surplus below 33.000,000 had a restraining
Influence on speculation dependent upon a
continuance of large credit extensions.
Money on call, on the other hsnd, showed
some relaxation and did not get as high
as yesterday and time loans were quoted
easier.
Tha day's advices added to the confidence
that substantial replenishment of cash
will be available to New York banks
promptly on Monday, when tbe treasury
aid to gold Imports goes Into effect. Es
timates of engagements in London point
to an amount reaching 810,000,000 or up
wards. Any addition to this supply by
Paris engagements Is a matter of less
assurance, but is within the probabilities.
Under the terms of the treaeury order,
also, gold on the way from Australia
will entitle the consignees to government
deposits until the period of arrival. Last
week 11,600.000 was shipped from that
source for San Francisco.
An approaching requirement for cash
which has not yet received public at
tention Is the necessity of the New York
trust companies to Increase their cash
reserves from 3 per cent of deposit, which
becomes obligatory on July 1, to 4 per

CATTLE Receipts of cattle were so light
this morning thai there could hardly e
said to have been enough en sals to really
niaks a market. For the week the receipts
show a large gain over tha orevlmi. m,.u-
with very little change as compared with a
year ago.
There were no beef steers on sale this
morning to amoupt to anything aside from
one ounce 01 corn-teas which sold a
36 24. tha aame cattle that have hn nr
Ing all the week and bringing practically
the same price. All that could be said of
tbe market on beet steers la to quote It as
nominally steady.
Nearly all the receipts today consisted cf
eowslurf which sold at good steady prices,
everything being cleaned up early In the
morning. There wera no fresh receipts of
feeders of any consequenoe and ths feeling
wss not materially changed from what It
was yesteraay.

HOOS Receipts of hogs this morning
were very light snd ths total for the week
shows a considerable falling oft as com
pared with last week, although somewhat
heavier than a year sgo. The msrket was
generally ltw higher and there wera un
doubtedly esses where hogs actually sold
16c higher than yesterday. While the trade
waa not an v.rv attva the rerelDta were
so light that pracrfcally everything In sight
was closed up In good season. Heavy hogs,
If anything, showed the most advance, the
top on light hogs 'toeing only iW higher
than yesterday. In other words, tha sales
were bunabed mora closely together than
usual 01 lata - ,
The advance tndav taken In connection
with that of yesterday makes up pretty
much all of the decline for the first hslf of
the week so thst prices today were not
much different from what they were on
Monday of this week or a trifle stronger
than at the cloae of last week. The sharp
reaction In the market, so far as can be
judged. Is due to lighter receipts at differ
ent market points and to the feeling on the
nifl tt m nnv tha the til TUnS for
some little time to noma ars over with. It
is barely possible, too. that with liberal
stocks of nrnvlnlnns nn hand rjackers them
selves may not be entirely averse w -
