During tba first half of the session the
market was decidedly weak. The cause
was the continued absence of rain In the
spring wheat territory. On a decline at
Liverpool prices here dropped to a new
low record for the season. Late In the day
much of the loss was regained on reports
from New York, that a considerable quan
tity of wheat had been taken there for ex
port. A private estimate on the total chip,

the amount at only- 800.000 bu. This mall

f'UNDS WILL Btv AVAILABLE MONDAY
Secretary Shasv' Osiers to Aivsset
: Cash Agalast Hold Enraged
Abread Peadtag Its
Arrival.
NEW YORK. Sept. a The stock market
today showed some stimulating effect from
the order of the Treasury department per
mitting deposit of government funds with
national banks against engagements of
gold for Import. The effect wss moderate,
partly owing to the selling to realise pro
ftt by thoe who bought stocks on ths
confident assumption yesterday that action
was Imminent by the secretary of the
treasury for the relief of the money market
and party -owing to the fact that ths
rail money market did not show the ex
pected relaxation as a result of the news.
As the measure of relief does not become
ope-rstlve until next Monday no actual In
crease t banking resources was Immedi
ately supplied, but It was hoped by op
erators In stocks mat me wuran i
new supplies, although delayed, would cause
freer offerings of credits and relieve the
stringency at once.
vnn this was seen 10 oe uifukhu,
the speculation wa Inclined to taks a
m-altlnv nnnlilnn. flood reelstanoe was
shown to anv selling pressure and prices
were sustained by the conspicuous strength
of some of ths speculative leaden In the
list or stocks. Iio actual steps were
nounced to take advantage of the facilities
froml!ed by the secretary of the treasury
o help the gold movement. No doubt Is
felt among bankers, however, that a con
siderable Inward movement of gold will
follow. The use of government deposits
may extend under the order to engage
ments of .gold made by the banks either
before or after the going Into -effect of
the order. Gold In transit to New York
next Monday will give the consignee the
right to the use of government funds until
Its srrlval as well as the gold engaged on
or after that date. The order makes no
restriction on the time that may be re
quired for the receipt of the gold If It has
been actually engaged to shipped. This
would make It feasible to buy gold In
Australia, Jspan or even In South Africa
and make the proceeds available for use
In New York from the data ef purchase
without expense for Interest charges while
the bullion is In transit. The arrangement
Is the same as that In force last April
with the exception of restrictions against
what seemed abuses of the privilege at
that time. It was supposed that some of
the recent .accumulation of gold In London
by undisclosed agencies has been for New
York account In expectation of the treas
ury action, which has been taken. In that
case such sums would be promptly avail
able on Monday, when the treasury order
goes Into effect for use In New York.
There waa much discussion of the probable
adequacy of this means to ease the money
market. 1 1
The time mdney market seemed to be un
affected by the news and lpana for sixty
and ninety d,ys still oommanded premiums
equivalent to 74 to 8 per cent, with six
months money lending at 64 to 7 per oent.
The only lenders In any amount were
foreign bankers. Yesterday s 32,000,000
transfer to the Interior through the sub
treasury were offset In the daily statement
of operations by extraordinary govern
ment disbursements to the amount of
$3,000,000, leaving the day' 'loss by the
banks only moderate. The government In
stitution has taken from the banks since
the last bank statement, however, $4,928,000
and $500,000 was deposited for transfer to
San-' Francisco today. The money strin
gency here is 'bringing' offerings In small

CATTL.E There was about ths usual
Thursday's run of cattle this morning, a
fsw over 100 cars being reported In. For
the week to date the receipts show liberal
gain over both last week and the cor
responding week of a year ago. It might
be added In this connection that cattle
receipts all this year have been gaining
as compared with a year ago, still ths In
crease has not been large amounting to
only a little oyer 60,000 head.
The supply of right good beef cattle has
been light all this week and as a con
sequent fully' steady prices havs been
maintained, while desirable grades have
been breaking. This morning there were
some better cattle here than have been
seen before this week.
There were also several bunches of good
range beeves In sight some ot them good
enough to bring 8S.I0. The market as a
whole was In very fair condition, the offer
ings for the most part being cleaned up In
good season, with the general market as
steady with yesterday.
Tha supply of cows and heifers was the
smallest that It has btten so far this week,
with the result that the market did not
how any quotable change prices remain
ing about steady with yesterday This
means, however, that the market is any
where from 20Q6&O lower than last week
and with some salesmen claiming as much
as 40c, decline In some case.
Strictly choice weighty feeders of good
breeding and dehorned have tfeen very
good and active sellers all the week with
the result that that kind of cattle has
shown no material change In prices. The
fact Is thst feeder buyers have bought
that kind of cattle away from the killers,
paying as high as 34.60 for -ulta a number
of bunchea The conditions governing that
kind of cattle were not changed today,
the market continuing steady. Horned
cattle and sll kinds of light cattle as well
as cattle lacking quality have been In too
large supply with the result that prloea
have been steadily tending lower, while
cattle of that description have been slow
to move and have been accumulating in
yards. While they were no lower today,
there were still quite a number, of them
on hand for which there was no very great
demand.

were very light even for a Thursday, only
about sixty csrs being reported In when

are nevertheless heavier than a year ago.
After declining 17He during the lust two
days the market took a turn for the better
today. It opened right at 6c higher and
strengthened up until mme hogs even
sold 10c higher. The trade waa active at
the advance and with such light receipts
It did not take very long to dispose of
the sixty csrs In sight.

SHEEP Receipts of sheep today were
moderate as ususl on a Thursday, the run
being about the same as one week ago.
The arrivals looked small compared to tne
frevlous days this week. The total for
he four days shows a very heavy gain
over the corresponding days of previous
weeks and also a large Increase over A year
ago.
The market this morning was without
any very new or interesting feature, the
trade being In practically the same condi
tion as detailed yesterday. Feeder sheep
and lambs contlnufaln very good demand
.with the market firm every day. Sheep
especially are bringing very high prices,
as compared with those prevailing at other
market points. In spite of the excessive
receipts this week practically everything
has changed hands on the day of arrival
and sellers without exception have been
exceedingly well pleased for notwith
standing the fact that high prices have
prevailed, they have been securing the
light kind ot stuff, to make good gains on
feed.
Fat sheep and lambs continue a little
slow, packers as noted yesterday being
evidently of the opinion that prices are
too high. The fact that eastern markets
are weakening has contributed somewhat
to this feeling. For the last two or three
days there has been a weak undertone to
the market and still prices have shown
comparatively little If any change?
