position In Kansas City and Issued orders

further decision la reached.
The extra daya on coal was not the only
complaint, aa the ahlppera protest not
against demurrage, but against the manner
!i which the demurrage law was enforced.
The railroad men practically admitted that
tha present method of enforcing the de
murrage law were not legal and readily
consented to have the executive committee
of the' rallroada meet with the committee
of the shippers next Monday to go over the
rules and eliminate the objectionable
featurea. ,
The ahlppera did not ask the present
rules to be set aside between now and next
Monday, but It Is understood the railroads
will not Insist upon a rigid enforcement of
the rulea In the meanwhile.

The annual report of the Burlington
showa a real surplus of 19 per cent on
common stock, but also shows an open
account for construction. The moat notable
feature of the report la , It ahowa an In
crease of $8,600,000 In the operating ex
penses and taxes and an Increase .of 17,450,000
In gross. The large Increase in expense
is said to be due to direct appropriations
for maintenance of property and the equipment.
The construction account of the Burling
ton Is effectually concealed In the annual
report "Just published. The Burlington In

beyond adequate maintenance. The Income
of the Burlington railroad is given at $1V
083,622. taxes, $2,018,494.; interest on bonds
$7.83.951; sinking fund. $721,963; other
charges, $230,484: total charges, $10,324,884;
balance, $7,758,738.
The reports for the fiscal year ending
June SO of the .Burlington railway, the
pxrent company, ahow gross earnings to be
$78,413,386; operating expenses, $00,658,11; net
earnings, $22,758,226; other Income, $410,682;
total Income, fc3.168.J0f.

A meeting will be held In St. Paul
Wednesday of the transportation depart
ment of the transcontinental lines, to
consider the private car question. Dave
Lincoln, car service agent of the Union
Pacific, will represent that road and As
sistant Superintendent of Transportation
Dickenson of the Burlington will also at
tend. With the report of the order given
by the Union Pacific for 6,000 refrigerator
cara to replace those of the private car
lines this meeting ia looked upon with
considerable Intereat.

The first grain ever shipped from South
Dakota to Omaha, with the possible ex
ception of a few cars of northern wheat
for milling purposes, will be on lt way to
this city In a few daya. One Omaha grain
firm which haa had bids out In that terri
tory since the new rate achedule went
Into effect, has reported acceptances on
several cars of oats an barley. Bids will
be made dally In the territory of the Mil
waukee and Northwestern.
"The tarlffa Just put In by the North
western and the Milwaukee are in the main
very satisfactory," said Secretary E. J.
McVann of the Grain exchange, "it la
true they were prepared In a great hurry
to get tbera published before August 28,
and for this reason there are probably
aome minor Inconsistencies In them which
will need to bo remedied. Again, aome
changes in rates for Chicago and Min
neapolis were made Just prior to August
28. and this may give those cities the ad
vantage In some cases, bat we will not
the new tariff carefully, and If our new
rates are not altogether satlafactory, the
roada will no doubt be ready to make tho
minor- changes desired."
