Provisions were un changed tp JHfafic Tower. nurai niniKri openea a trine easier because of a moderate decline at Liver pool and favorable weather for harvesting the spring wheat crop In this country, from the commencement of the session, however, the September delivery was In good demand by several Influential traders and this soon started covering by local shorts. The marked responded to the de mand, the September delivery advancing sc. Other deliveries advanced In lesser de gree. Official prediction of rain through-out- sections of the spring wheat country sasisted In creating a firmer tone. Trading was quite active all day. During the last hour there was considerable profit-taking which resulted In declines In all deliveries. I' ho market closed steady. December apened He lower at 7.VV, advanced to 74ViC ind closed at 73'9,73c. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 277,) bu. Exports for the week, as shown by Brad streefs, were -equal to 57,000.000 bu. Pri mary receipts were 489.0UO bu., compared with 862.000 bu. for the corresponding day a year ago. Minneapolis, Duluih and Chi cago reported receipts of 164 cars, against mi cars last week and 424 curs one year ago. Liquidation of September holdings had a depressing effect In general on the corn market. A decline of l"c In the price of oaah corn waa directly responsible for tho selling pressure. Indirectly the prollt laking was due to the expectation of Kreally Increased receipts of corn from iow on. With the exception of the Sep tember option, which waa rather weak, the market closed weak. CALL LOAN RATE RISES TO 12 PER CENT Forecast of lafarorablo Bank State teat Adds to Stagaatloa Close Is Barely Steady Alter Slight Rally NEW TOR K, Aug. 31. Danger signals loomed on the financial horiaon shortly after the opening of today's market. Call money opened at M per cent and speedily advanced to 12, the highest prices In several months. As a result the market soon fell Into a state of inertia, such ss It had not shown for weeks before. Another Influence which made lor lower prices was the speech of Mr. Bryan, although Wall street professed to regard that as a mere Incident an excuse and not a reason for selling securities. Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that Mr, Bryan's attitude - offers small comfort to the so-called vested In terests and the flnaialaj community In general. . Efforts to advance prices by circulating reports of gold Imports were made at the opening and while It Is generally known that negotiations to that end are under way no definite developments were obtainable. It Is Interesting to note, amnt this subject, that bar gold and American eagles rose In the London market during the day, eagles smartly, while an advance In gold prices was reported from other Imports less certain, especially as a slightly higher rate was quoted for demand sterling In this market. The stock market was with out a leader throughout the session, but the trading element played for a reaction and so far as any marked tendency was discernible their tactics were fairly suc cessful except In the case of Union Pa cific, which held well at a marked advance over the previous day's close and some of the specialties. In this class was included Adams Express, which on a sale of one lot recorded an advance of 60 points. Some significance attaches to the rise In this stock In view of the strength of kindred securities and the recent Increase in the dividend of a rival concern and there were Intimations of a closer "community of In terests." Trading during the early, session was several hundred shares below the average of recent days and In the late session grew even smaller. A further ad vance In call loans to 12 per cent and no more definite news as to- gold engagements added to the general feeling of discourage ment, which resulted In almost utter stagnation. The forecasts of tomorrow's bank statement showing a loss by the banks to the sub-treasury of more than 85.000,000 and the general movement ex tending the loos to almost t6.SO0.O0O, in creased the hesitating tone of the market, although prices were then the best of tha day. The strength of Union Pacific on buying, which emanated from one of the prominent commission houses was one of the pussllng features of the day. Southern Pacific, Reading and Amalgamated Copper shared in the rise, but transactions In these stocks were In relatively small amounts. Pullman Palace Car waa another. one of the specialties that exhibited unusual strength, selling at 260, an advance of 8 points from the previous day. In the last hour the market grew Increasingly dull and spiritless, but became more animated Just before the end, when Call money One more advanced to the high figure of the day and rumors of good engage ments were revived, though details were still lacking. It was also announced that the Bank of England had ordered another advance In the price of American eagles. The closing waa barely steady, active issues showing a tendeneyyto rally. Ixtndnn's operations here were nominal, sales Just about offsetting purcHaaes. The sub-treasury transferred toOO.OOO to San Francisco. Bonds were steady. Total sales par value tl.4no.nno. United States new 4s coupon advanced 4 per cent on call. The following was the range ot prices on the New York Stock exchange: 8l. A considerable proportion of the offerings consisted of feeders, there being no great number of killers on sale. The market aa a whole might be summed up as a typical Friday's market that la. no great number of cattle on sale and not many wanted. The demand for beef steers was far from urgent, there being only one or two buyers who appeared to care very much about securing fresh ' supplies. Such rattle us pleased them sold at about steady prices, but the general trade was dull and feature less. There waa nothing very good Id sight to make a top. What waa said about beef ateera would apply In great part to the trade In cows snd heifers. Moat ot the buyers seemed to be out of the market, so that It waa a good deal a matter of luck In having the right kind of stuff and getting hold of a buyer that wanted It. Aa Is apt to be the ease under such circumstances there ware salesmen who thought that they got out at fully steady prices, while othera re ported their sales aa lower. -As noted yesterday, the country has not been aa good a feeder buyer as anticipated and quite a (rood many cattle were atlll In the hands of speculators this morning with very few prospeetlvj buyers In sight. As a result the feeder market waa gener ally 10c. lower and some sales even looked 16c lower than yesterday. Representative sales: BEEF STEERS. Ke. At. Pr. No. At. The trade was slow at the advance, packers appearing to pay the prlcea under protest and not being especially anxious for the hogs at the In creased value. Some of the rough mixed loads did not secure the full antoiuit if the advance noted. As will be noted from the sales heavy hogs sold largely at 3.V56M 5.70. whereas yesterday the bulk went at 16 5066.60. Light hogs sold pretty fen-rally at I5.!vuii.00. with a top at t.074. Yesterday the best light hogs sold at tt.'. with a large proportion of the better loads at e6.ISMW6.S6. The reaction In the market today marks the first advance that has taken place In prices since Monday of last week. There lies been a steady decline every day since that date until today's upturn. Of this number one car was direct to a packer. There was a fnir demand and everything aold quite readily at practically steady prlcea. There was nothing very good lo make a top on the market but the best yearlings here brought 36-06 with wethers at 35-30 and ewes at 14.65. Quite a string of feeder lambs sold yesterday afternoon loo late to be Included In the day's report but they brought about steady prices. The sheep market all this week has been In very fair shape and no great changes have taken place In any direction. There have been weak spots and some sales could be pointed out which were reallv lower. On the other hand some kinds, especially feeders, have aold strong.
