Damage reports from the southwest also
created a more bullish feeling. The mar
ket closed strong with prices close to the

and then advanced to 71 Vic- The close was
at nHc. December sold between 7c
and VaUr. and closed at 74Hc, a net gain
of Mc. Clearances of wheat and hour
were eaual to 110.000 bushels. Minneapolis,
Duluth and Chicago reported receipt of liW
care against 376 cars last week and H40 car
a year ago.
Continued rain In Iowa and Illinois caused, i
considerable profit-taking In the' corn pit
early In the day, which resulted In a weak
market. Later, however, all of the !
wa regained on covering by short. Dam
age report from Kansas and an estimate
of small local receipts on Monday also con-.
trlbuted to the stronger feeling. Trading

ment which marked the closing of yester
day' Mock market was resumed at today
opening, when Union paclflc and Southern
I'aclflo continued their advance to new
higher record. The real feature of the
day, however, were St. I'aul and Atchison.
The buying of these lasuea was regarded
a most Impressive. The early movement
embraced United Btstes Steel common,
which touched the highest prices since
1(01; the Hill Issues, Heading, New York
Central and Smelting. Opening sales of
Union Paelflo aggregated 80,000 shares.
Southern Pacific 6.0UO, St. Paul 19,000 and
8teel 7.609.
There wa no new to account for the
rapid rlsa In St. Paul other than th rumor
everywhere heard during the last few
days of buying of the stock for Southern
Pacific, or Harriman Interests. Atchison
rise wa ascribed to the belief tht the
stock Is to be placed on a 6 per cent
dividend basis. The excited opening was
followed by profit taking and the market
relapsed before th end of the first hour.
A freeh spurt In St. Paul and Atchison,
which .ent the stocks higher than before,
brought a renewal of the early activity,
Apparently no thought wa given to the
bank statement until shortly before its
Issuance, when some apprehension was re
flected In the market a hesitating tone.
These fears were groundless, however, in
asmuch as the statement wa In most es
sential favorable. Loan showed only a
nominal Increase, considering the volume
of the week's business, while the cash loss
was less than half the amount conserva
tively estimated. To be sure, the re
serves were reduced to Ifss than M.O.Ofl,
ns against $9,000,000 for the corresponding
week last year, over $67,000,000 In 1904 and
more than 320.000,000 in 1903. The showing
lor : Is hardly a fair criterion, however,
a t-.o bank then held the money paid
by the government for the Panama canal.
The market made general recovery altar
the publication of the statement, St. Paul
and Atchison again leading the list. Heavy
pront taking set In and the market, while
closing extremely active, showed general
recessions from the top, Union Pacific mak
ing a net decline. The net gains in t.
Paul and Atchison were 5- and 2 points,
respectively. Practically the entire active
list shows material rains for the week.

SHEEP There were no sheep of any con-
s. quenco today, only two cars being re-poi-teu
and tney were late in arriving. The
total receipts for the week showing a
larser Increase over a year ago and a
still larger increase aa compared with last
week. t he ai rivals have consisted very
largely of sheep, with only a sprinkling of
lambs, and none of them very good. The
fuel is, lambs have not commenced 10 run
as yet.
The market aa a whole has been In vei y
satisfactory condition and prices have
been very high all tho week. During the
eaiiy part of tne week sheep were gener
ally quoted as steady, but on Weduesday
there was a sharp advance In prices, tmit
aay being 10$c higher. Most of this was
taKen off the day following, so that at the
close of the week most salesmen ar quot
ing the market Just about where tt waa
at th beginning. It I very evident, how
ever, that wherever any change have
taken place tney have been on the ld of
better prices and It I possible to mention

the lamb market haa been In very pe
culiar condition. Lamb hav been very
high and there has been a feeling on tne
part of everyone that prices were in fact
too high. Everyone has been expecting
that receipts would become liberal and that
prices would decline rapidly, but the ex
pected haa not happened, on the contrary,
receipts of iamb at ail point have con
tinued light and th prevailing high price
hav generally been well maintained. A
a matter of fact, whenever receipts showed
up a little large weakness would develop,
but taking tho week as a whole It IB
hardly possible to quote any material
change. Supplies at eastern markets con
tinue light, with prices high, and so long
as that is the case there is not much op
portunity for the markets at th - river to
develop any prolonged weakness.
' Blocker and feeders have been In very
good demand all th week, and though re
ceipts have been liberal, they have been
none too much so to meet the requirements
of buyers. Feeder sheep especially hav
been free seller and prices obtained hav
been very satisfactory to owners. Lamb
buyers have complained a good deal about
the high prices of feeder lambs, claiming
that tney ought to be $1.00 per hundred
lower, but In spite of all complaints and
objections they have taken everything
coming and at the close of tha week tha
