A Chicago fan upholds the honor of the
German stock among ball , players, mod
estly decrying the Idea that only Irishmen
sre quick-witted enough to be good Infield
era. He bea.-s out his theory with con
siderable skill, and his argument is well
worthy of perusal. He writes to the Cin
cinnati Enaulrer:
"1 was much interested In Phelsn's arti
cle on the German Invasion of professional
base ball, yet I note that he overlooked
some men of German ancestry playing In
the major leagues. Slagle Is of Pennsyl
vania German origin, the original form of
the name being Schlegel, pronounced
"Schlugle." Kvers is the Low German
form of Eberi (boar) and is as common
in German nomenclature as Wilbur (wild
boar) in English. With these additions
to Phelan's list of the Cubs of German
antecedents, we have the following line
up: Slagle, Bheckard, Schulte, Chance,
Kvers, Tinker, Stelufeldt, Kllng. Hoffman,
Gessler, Reulbach and Pflester, leaving
only Moran, Taylor. Brown and Lundgren
to be divided among the other nationalities
that compose the American people.
Queer that Phelan should have overlooked
that doughty Pirate, Count Heinle Pelts.
He also failed to mention Orth and Crlgcr.
The only Keelers I have known were of
German origin, the name Koehler (Collier)
being Americanized to Keeler, Kohler,
Coler, Caylor. The only Irish name it re
sembles Is Kelleher.
"I have been a base ball fan since 1868
and 1869, when, aa a boy, I sat perched on
brick kilns and plies of lumber, watching
Harry Wright's Red Stockings and Chero
kee Fisher's Buckeyes. Although the great
majority of ball players of those days were
Americans of British ancestry, I recall
some players whose names indicate Ger
man stock. There were Sensenderfer, Mey
erle, Flsler, Zettllng. Reach and that peer
less catcher, Snyder. There was Joe Ger
hard, the leading second baseman of his
day, and Joe Hornung, a leader anions
outfielders and batterst I recall the Rec.
clus brothers, Schaefer, Shaffer, Peters,
Striker, Fulmer. Sommer, Hecker, Fouts,
Faats, Gross, Rein. Kessler, Pfeffer, Ger
many Smith, Seward, Klnbedans, Sowders,
King, Werrick, Long, Big Bill Lange,
Shrlver, Hustlng, Selbaeh, Bhalllx, Brelten
stein all had their day. Despite the dic
tum of Connie Mack that a German can't
think fast enough to play an infield posi
tion, some of these held their own with
any quick-witted Irishman. Joe Gerhard,
Herman Long and Fred Pfeffer, in their
prim J, were as good es they make them.
"Although German names are more nu
merous than formerly, what does the tan
care, so long as they deliver the goods.
