damage to spring wheat. It wag claimed,
waa mostly In North Dakota and Manitoba.

the market began to weaken under free
offerings from the local holders. As trad
ing advanced offerings Increased In volume.

two graded No. 1 bard and the other was
of the durum variety. The excellent quality
of these arrivals was the chief factor in

local market. Inasmuch as the wheat came
from territory where It was claimed the
yield waa vecy unsatisfactory. Liquidation
was In evidence throughout the remainder
of the day and the tone of the market be
came quite heavy. The cloae was- weak.

up to 7Ht$7Jo, and then declined to 1o.

compared with 1(21,400 bu. the corresponding
day a year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and
Chicago reported reoetpts of 171 oars against
404 cars last week and 1M cars a year ago.
Firm cables, small local receipts and
practically no acceptances had a strengthr
enlng effect on the oorn market early In
the day. There waa a good demand by
commission houses the greater, part, of the
day. The break In wbeat caused con
siderable profit-taking In corn, whloh re
sulted In an easier undertone. The close

mal conditions prevailed In the stock mar
ket tooay. The fremy of the four days
following the so-called llarrlman episode
gave place to a saner and safer course.
Trsding was only moderately large, com
pared with the previous days of tns week,
snd the trend of events seemed working
towards a more logical conclusion. It waa
evident that the element to a-nlch respon
sibility attaches for the recent movement
had begun to take heed of Impending flnan
clal conditions. Indeed, the uay s develop
ments in thst quarter' were highly In
teresting and called for serious considera
tion. Not only did oall money advance to
per cent, tue highest figure in sSveral
months, but there was also a deci,d stif
fening In time loans, 4 per cent being de
manded for practically all periods. With
the present weak bank position, the sur
plus of the associated Institutions at Its
Hiweit for this particular period In thir
teen years, and enormous crop demanda ap
proaching, it was quite natural tnat money
conditions shoald undergo a marked
change. There were peralstent reports of
early gold Imports, and the further weak
ness In exctiange lent plausibility to these
stories, but experts figure tnat none would
be obtainable before the coming week. If
then. The early feature was the move
ment In the Hill stocks, whlcti carried
Great Northern preferred to the highest
level reached In the present movement.
Northern Pacific participated In this move
ment, and tne threadbare story of the
"ore deal, ' with resultant ' rights ' to hold
ers of the Hill Issues, were revamped with
more or less wealth of circumstantial de
tail. As a matter of fact the financial
community Is of the opinion that the ne
gotiations between the Hill Interests and
the United States Steel corporation for con
trol of these properties have been prueV
tlcally closed. Thst some material bene
fits will accrue to holders of the Hill se
curities is also believed, but signs do not
point to an early announcement of this
very Important matter. The Irregularly
which characterised the opening of the lo
cal market was doubtless a reflection of
conditions In London, which sold, American
securities, later takins the sama attitude
In this market. Trustworthy reports
agree that that center has taken huge
profits In American stocks on the recent
rise.
The Harrlman Issues manifested a hail
ing tone st the opening, but later- moved
up with the remainder of the active list,
keeping well above the previous day's clos
ing quotations. They held rather better
than certain other active issues, whose
early 'gains were wiped nut in the begin
ning of the afternoon session, when the
rate for call money advanced to the high
est. It was at this Juncture that room
traders took an aggressive attitude on the
bear sida, offering stocks at marked con
cessions In the hope of catching stop-,
orders. This move was partly successful,
but the freedom with which these offerings
waa absorbed soon brought a. substantial
rally. After a - brief period of dullness,
during which Oreat Northern preferred,
Northecn Pacifto and Colorado Fuel lost
the greater part of their early gains, the
market started anew, under the lead of
United States Steel. The common stock
was taken in enormous quantltlea, selling
aa high as 46, the highest price reached
In four years. The buying was reported
to be of an Impressive character and was
accompanied by rumors that this stock
will b plaoed on a 4-per-cent basis, its
original status, at the next quarterly meet
ing. . ,
i he market underwent a complete re
versal In the last twenty minutes, a ter
rific drive by the shorts, and the weatern
speculative coterie affecting prices through
out the list. Not only, were all the day's
gains lost In this movement, but a number
of material declines were registered, the
market - closing weak. . There , was a
further loss by the banks to , the sub
treasury, the decline now - amounting to
almost $6,000,000. In addition to this loss
It is understood that some of the banks
have been making heavy .direct ahlprnenta
of currency - to western and southern

ble tailing off In the receipts ot cattle

a wnole, without any very noteworthy
changes.
Beef steers of desirable quality seemed
to be In very fair demand and sold quite
freely at good steady prices. The sup
ply was so light that it did not taao bu
ers long to clean up the few loada oi
fered. There were among the receipts
cattle good enough to bring 14.16. The
most ot the beet cattle on sale consisted
of westerns, which also brought about
the same prices as prevailed yesterday,
the trade, howevtr, was Inclined toward
dullness, there being no very great ac
tivity to the movement,
Cows and heifer u..-o sold at- about
steady prices, provided they were the kind
that packers seemed to want. The saius
men who happened to have - something
that buyers did not especially take to
thought that they had hard work In se
curing as good prices aa yesterday. This
was especially true of canning stock. Tn.)
market, as a whole, was rather dull, there
seeming to be a lack of snap.
Considering the total receipts there was
a fair showing of stockere and feeders.
The demsnd was quite good and the most
of the offerings changed hands in 'air
season. ' So far aa could be observed there
was no quotable change In prices, the
general market being steady with yester

As compared with the extreme cloae yes
terday there was no very great chango.
There was a lair shipping oemand which
heiped out to some extent providing an
outlet for the better grade of light and
butcher hoga. As ha been the case of
late, when the market Is lower, prices
were very uneven and hogs of the same
kind and quality sold at quite a wHo
range. Thus light hogs sold all the way
from 14.00 up to I4.J0, the latter prloe
being the top. as against 14.26 yesterday.
Heavy hogs sold from 15.76 to 16.16 with
mlt;ed and medium weights at ts.noti 0
