ICn. glneerlng Review of the new Brown-Boverl electrlo locomotives, constructed for work ing the traffic through the Elmplon tunnel, which is twelve miles In length. The loco motive operate on three-phase current and sre 1,000-horse power capacity. They are capable of hauling passenger trains weighing nearly 400 tons and freight trains weighing nearly 600 tons without difficulty. Th time required for working the former through the tunnel Is about twenty min utes and the latter about forty minutes. There are three driving axles, having a wheel base of 4.1 meters, while the total wheel base. Including the two pilot axles, measures 9.7 meters. To the driving axle two motors sre connected with connecting rod and well balanced by four counter weights, two on each side ot the frsme. Each of. the motors has a cpaaclty of 676 horse power, with a maximum output of 1,150-horse power. Under- normal condi tions only 890-horse power is required for each motor when operating at a speed of thirty-four kilometers per hour, and 4S0- hors power when the locomotive Is travel Ing. st ths rate of sixty-eight kilometers per hour. The total length ot the locomo live over the buffers Is 12.33 meters. The drawbar pull ot the locomotive at a speed thirty miles per hour Is six tons, while the drawbar pull of the highest speed, sixty to seventy kilometers (forty miles) per hour. Is 1.6 tons. The total weight of the locomotive Is sixty-two tons, of which the electrical equipment weighs twenty-eight tons and the mechanical equipment thirty four ton, while the weight on the driving wheel Is about 84,000 pound. Th driving wheel ere 1.64 meter In diameter, while the smaller wheels measure 850 millimeters In diamerter. Two trolley wires are used and the current collecting devices are so arranged that the locomotive can travel In either direction without changing the post tlon of the trolley pole. There are two speeds at which this locomotive may ba operated normally, the lower speed being thirty-four kilometers per hour snd ths higher ipeed lxtyelght kilometers per electrlo power stations st Brfgue and Gella, a three-phase current being conducted over the feeder lines and trolley wires at a voltage of 3,300 and 4 frequency of fifteen cycles. ' Twa Chapters from Life. "They've certainly had enough romance to bring about a union ot hearts" is the comment of the friends ot Miss May Lours, a student nurse st the Medico Chlrurglcal hospital, and Chsrles Wadllnger a student In the medical school with whloh the hospital Is connected.
