NEW YORK. Aug. 11-Wall street spent
a day of feverish Impatience In the ex
pectation of aeelng the solution of the rid
dle of the excited speculation In Union Pa
cific and Southern Pacific. Tbe excite
ment continued at high pitch In those
stock. It waa initiated by the delaya In
the assembling of the authorities having
the decision of the question of dividends
on the two stocks. A IK I tne usual
hour of the assembling of the committee,
the dealing on the Stock Exchange seemed
approaching a culmination a that time
drew near. The delay was explained a
being due to the attendance of the mem
ber upon a funeral. Other explanation
were forthcoming a th delay waa pro
longed. The .day paaeed without a solu
tion of the riddle. The uniformed specu
lative following of the buying of the stock
wn somewhat dated by this course of pro
cedure. The movement of the etocka, how
ever, showed but alight effect from thl
condition of uiraettlement. Their uatatned
strength was attributed to a conviction that
a decision of the dividends to be paid had
been arrived at, although th announce
ment was withheld. The market fell Into
intense dullneea during the mid-day period.
Speculative feeling continued at a high
tension, however, In the mood of uncer
tainty a to what the action of the market
would be after the expected good new wa
out. Confidence In the action to be taken
wa too strong to allow much room tor
Influence on any acattered skepticism. But
on the aubject of how th market would
act If speculative hope were all fulfilled
there wa great diversity of opinion.
Hence the mid-session halt in th trading
and the sagging tendency of price. The
action of the money market wa a steady
ing influence on any disposition to run Into
speculative exces. The average rate for
call loans during the day waa higher than
yesterday In plte of om substantial re-
lenlshment of looal money supplies. Th
argest part of thla waa shown In the pay
ment by the sub-treasury of 12,110,000 trans
ferred by telegraph from San Francisco
and which waa on account of Australian
gold, a consignment of which wa received
in San Francisco on Tuesday. Regular-sub-treasury
operations also are yielding
something to the banks with the month'
pension payments running at the flood tide.
On the other hand, the deposit of Il.000.0u0
at the sub-treasury for telegraphic trans
fer to St. Louis waa of seneattonal effect
aa a distinct evidence (f the force of the
harvesting demanda which may be counted
upon to lake many million out of New
York when once It I under wy. The fig
ure of the foreign trade for July were
not reassuring on the exci.ange altuation
although the future movement of the crop
Is largely dependent upon to move gold
In thl direction. The expansion of up
wards of 122.000,000 In the value of July
Imports and the relatively small growth
In exports leave the excess value of ex
ports for th month only W.92S.960 aa com
pared with I23.417.81S In July of last year.
The strength In Pennsylvania made an
active market for the convertible bonds of
which large holding were left, In the hand
of the syndicate when it was dissolved.
The reaction In prices which followed th
announcement that no dividend - action
would be reported from the Union Pacific
and Southern Pacific meetings waa resisted.
The view was apparently taken that the-
stocKa were in a stronger position wun
the mystery still on than If formal an
nouncement of dividend action had been
made. The action of th St. Paul direc
tor In offering th 128,000,000 of treasury
stock to stockholders at par thus confirms
a long standing expectation encouraged con
fidence In the dividend hopes on the Pa
clflca. There waa heavy realising just
at the last In Southern Pacific and the
closing was In consequence unsettled and
IrreguUr.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales par
' value 1X350.000. United State bond were
t all unchanged on call.

It seemed to be a case of too many caul
of one kind, there not being enough
greasers to fill out with the corn-fed
steer. The result .waa that corn cattle
were very alow and dull and anywhere
from weak to 10c lower than yesterday.
Grass beef of desirable quality commanded
auoul steady price. -
There were not many cow or heifer on
sale, but auch aa ther wer brought about
tady prices, th market showing very

Tne trade, however, wa dull and it look

Aside from on Btrtng of westerns, which

usual on th laat half of th week, th
feeilng was none too strong on that claa

HOOS For the first tlm since August 8
It wa possible to quote the hog market
a little higher today. The advance waa
not very great, nor was It th same on
II classes of hog; still, the general mar
ket could safely be quoted as 6c higher
then yesterdsy. A a matter of fact some
hug showed more advance than that and
ether less. Th top waa 7Sc higher than
yesterday, Th trade wa not very active
at the advance, but still the most of th
hog nld In reason hie reason, becoming
if anything a little lower toward the last
From the sales below It will re noted
that heavy hogs sold largely at tt..snj.xA.
whereas yesterday they brought tv74io.M.
Light hngs went largely at li.90j6.00, as
agnlrst lV8ftfii.8S for th bulk yesterday.
From the table of receipts It will be noted
that the arrival this week ar running
considerably ahead of the record for last
ween and for a year ago. It might aio
be added that the receipts for the first
half of the month show a aaln of 34.49 as
compared with the corresponding period of
year ago.
