Wheat price were wear: from tlie first

price declining over a cent.
What lew rallies came were taken ad

Other countries were offerlnr Ijvernool
new wheat at a much lower nrure than was
asked (or American wheat, and the Eng
lish buyers accordingly reduced their Amer
ican bids. Weather la both northwest and
southwest was favorable, and the north
west people said their market would go
lor as soon as spring wheat began to
move.
Corn received little attention. Th Sep
tember option was firm and nervous. Crop
conditions were favorable, but this was
offset by continued light movement and
good demand. The market Is a scalping

for a Umsv

Today's Record-Herald sayst ' 'Drain
shippers are watching developments In ilia
freight situation with more than the usual
Interest. Important meetings of western
and eastern railroad men are to be held

anxious to have tha matter settled before
tha big winter movement of com begins.
. Tomorrow's series of meeting promises to
be of great Importance to the grain trade

th question thai win settle and will last

' ' CHICAGO, Aug. 14.-A liberal Increase In
contract stocks of wheat In Chicago was
on of th main reasons for weakneea to
day In the local market. The close for
September delivery waa off l4ffH4e. corn
waa unchanged, oats were down 14c and
provision were, from ignw to l$ttl6o.
lower. " '
Th wheat market waa weak th ntlre,
day, affected by lower eablee and con
tinued favorable weather. Cash house and
several leading longs were the principal
sellers. Additional selling followed the an
nouncement of a gain for th week of
1000,000 bu. In local contract stocks of
wheat. Another bearish factor waa th
Spanish' crop report, .' which indicated a
total yield 'of wheat amounting to from
40 to SO per cent above the orop of th last
three year. Th market closed extremely
, weak, with price almost at the lowest point
- of th day. September opened a shade to
ujyuc lower at 7m72Hc, sold off to 7CV(j
tic and closed at 71c. Clearance of wheat
and flour were equal to 222,600 bu. Tha
'.world's visible supply, as shown by Bra li
st reefs. Increased T8S.00O bu. Primary re
' celpts were 100,000 bu., aa compared with
768,000 for th corresponding dajr on year
ago. Minneapolis. Duluth and Chicago re-
Kirted receipts of 60s cars, aa agalnat 432
st week and $7t a year ago.
Considering the Weakness of wheat, the
com market displayed remarkable firmness.
' Ths nearby deliveries were held firm by a
continued small movsment and decreasing
stock. Th world' visible supply showed
a total decrease of 1,040,000 bu. WTill th
local stocks decreased 461,000 bu. for the
week. Th May option waa depressed by
favorable reports on the new orop. The
market closed steady. Th September de
livery opened a ahade higher to Ha lower
at 4V,o to 4Vtaa4,c, sold between mSic and
49o, and closed at 4VsO. Local receipts
wers ISO care, with 67 of contract grade.
Osta were easier. September opened n
chsnged at 81V40, sold off to JlHc and closed
at HHc. Local receipts were lift ear.
Th provisions market ruled eaay all day.
At th close September pork waa off 10c at

MORE RUMORS OF HARRIMAN DIVIDENDS
Tradere Seem D4swsdl t Await

NEW TORK, Aug. 14,-Tb market for
securities wss too dull todsy to warrant
anytnlng but negative conclusions. There
seemed to be a rennquisnmeni oi inn is-
orous support which has been eviaeni
throughout th recent rise in prices.
forts to carry prices upward were desisted
from and the market left to take care of
itself to a large extent. This was not
without Its effect on the tone, which be
came Intensely dull and rather oggy.
The sneculstlon showed th want of the
cuttomery stimulant which has been ad
ministered at snort intervaia, sometime oy
an actual news occurrence, and when this
was lacking by diligent rumors of expected
development, which proved even more ef
fective than the actual occurrence. There
waa a disposition to await the outcome of
some of these rumors. Assertions have
grown positive that this week's meetings
of th authorities of the Harriman Pa
cific railroads will take definite action
toward the placing of Southern Pacific
on the dividend llet and for the Increase
of the Union Pacific dividend. Expectation
Is almost equally well denned of an an
nouncement of St. Paul rights this week.
These expectations have been so often dis
appointed In the past that a spirit of cau
tion and of some derre of skepticism ha
grown up and was reflected In the day s
operations In stocks. This spirit was fos
tered by the failure to act by the Cana
dian Pacific directors yesterday on th
supposed plan to distribute a "bonus to
stockholders as a result of the large sales
of the company' land holdings. That
stock was weak In consequence. In spite of
the extraordinary favorable results from
th year' operation. The surplus re
ported for the year, after the paytng of
the dividend, was $8,262,082, compared with
$1,784,663. But holders of the stock appar
ently did not feet compensated by this
showing, for their disappointment of the
expected extra disbursement. A similar
effeot on sentiment war produced by the
conservative tone on the question of In
creased dividends and In the pObllo utter
ance of James J. Hill of the Great North
ern. There was comment also upon a tone
of seeming levity In the quoted references
by that gentleman to the persistent rumor
of the ore lands deal. It Is to be said of
the market, however, that In aplte of the
withdrawal of active efforts toward lifting
prices there waa little evidence of dam
aging pressure to sell. Supporting offer
were effected upon an early decline and
when these were made effective the market
practically became a drifting match, with
the trading almoet completely Idle at limes.
Testerday's reports of gold engagements
were the cause of some confusion, owing
to the failure to Identify th institution
In New York which had made the engage
ment. Foreign exohange authorities pro
fessed to see only a loss In th reported
engagement under yesterday' condition.
Foreign exchange advanced today and a
hardening effect on th foreign money
market, resulting from New York's demsnd
for gold, waa In continued evidence. Ster
ling exchange at Paris, however, advanced
again and reports from that center were
to the effect that loan were being secured
there for New York acoount. This would
Indicate that apprehension In Paris over
the Russian outlook' had so far subsided
aa to permit a relaxation of the hold upon
money resources. The weekly bulletin of
the weather bureau confirmed the feeling
Of confidence over the maintenance or the
Improvement of conditions of the crop re
ported In th government monthly state
ment. The special strength of some of the
winter wheat and corn carriers was at
tributed to the high crop condition. The
recommendation of the executive commit
tee of the Consolidated Oas company to
maintain the present dividend rate, al
though It would seem to relieve a fear
which- caused recent weakness In that
stock, wss greeted by a decline. The call
money rate was little changed, but asking
ratea for time loans for sixty and ninety
day were raised to 5 per cent and for
five and six month to 6 per cent. Prices
went to the lowest In the last hour and
then recovered to tha best of the dav.
dosing firm.
vonau were irregular: total sales, oar
value, $1,226,090. United States bonds were
all unchanged on call.

CATTLE Receipt of caul were light
again today. In spits of the fact that th
market ha been showing considerable Im
provement during the last few days.
Tbe light receipts of beef catle have
made buyer hungry for supplies and they
wer out early thla morning and wer free
buyer of th mors deslrabls kind. Cattl
of that description might b quoted a
strong with th trad fairly actlv. There
wer eornfeds good enough to bring 96.00
and westerns better then $5.00. The lee
deslrabls kind of beeve were a little alow
and no more than steady; In fact, sellers
who had cattle that wer not spectalty
desirable were quoting the market no mor
than ateady.
The market on cows and heifers was In
about the same condition aa the steep mar
ket, that Is, the better and more deslrabl
kinds wer free eller st strong price,
while the commoner kinds moved off At
about yesterday's figures.
There were mor atocker and feeder
here than for om day back and also
som better cattl. The demand wa good
end th market firm on deslrabl kinds, a
high $4.46 being paid for good western
feeder.

JHOG.8 The recelpta of hog th
heaviest of any dsy since June 29. 2f2 car
being reported In. Thla big run would
eem to lndlct that the country 1 com
ing to th conclusion that hogs are going
still lower and prefer to take present prices
te waiting until later.
Ruvers st sited out thl morning with tins
determination to bresk the market still
further and they were materially aided In
their effort bv th liberal receipt. A a
result the market w lowr right from
the outlet, and while seller mad quite
an effort to tem the tide, they were coin-
Selled to rive In and let their hogs go at a
ecllne. While a good many hog did not
look over 6c lower, the general market
would have to be quoted aa fully 64jloc
lower, and not especially actlv at the de
cline. The decline wss. If anything, the heaviest
n the top hogs, that Is, on th good light
weights. It will be noted from the ale
below that very few light hogs even
touched $4.09, wheress yesterdsy a good
mspv load sold at and above that price.
Another thing that will be noted from the
sales Is that price on th different grde
of bog wer cloer together than has been
the rule for some little time hnck; In other
words, sale were more closely bunched.
In considering ,thl market It would b
well to bear la mind that prlcee st this
point are still right cioee up to Chicago.

SHEEP A noted yesterdsy
market was rather slow so far aa fat
wether and lamb were concerned and yet
the most of the receipts, large aa they
were, were cleaned up before the close.
This morning there wa another liberal
run and the market again opened slow on
fat stuff. This was due In part to un
favorable reports from other market points,
which made packers a little cautious, and
In part du to th fact that a considerable
proportion-of the receipts did not arrive
at the yard until lat In the forenoon.
Thl almost always make a slow market,
as there la a natural disposition on the
part of packers to wait until everything la
In before making selection. While th
trade waa alow, a noted above, packer
kept picking around and such stuff as they
wanted they paid Just about ateady price
for. Thu th Rhea Brother' Montana
wether old at $6, the same a yesterday.
Th fact that eastern market are breaking
be unmistakably created a rather weak
feeling In the market for fat sheep and
lamb, even though price do not show
much Chang as yet.
Th market on feeders wa actlv and
fully 'teady-and seller found very little
difficulty in disposing, of anything deslr
abl to a feeder buyer. In fact the feeder
buyer wer the main aupport of the mar
ket and anything that they could uae old
at very satisfactory prlcea. One big string
of thirteen car of Wyoming wether sold
to a feeder buyer at $4.80.
