The wheat market waa dead today, trad
being light and the rang of values small.
Cables were a little blgher and reports
imi of too much rain In Kuaeta. Receipts
were Urge. There was a larger Increase In
rfhe rtslbis supply than had oeen expected,
but this fact seemed to hare little efteot
on the market. Cash prices were steady.
Weather In both southwest and northwest
was clear and the spring wheat movement
la expected to show an Increase.
Exporters said they were out of line and
there was no prospect of doing business
this week. The close was unchanged on
September and a fraction lower on Decem
ber. The durum wheat yield In the northwest
la said to be much In excess of sny esti
mate yet made. In soma Inetanf-es as high
ss 75-Jer cent of the area Is of this va
riety, tiome counties that last year had
ne durum Vila year hare as much aa W
per cent.
Corn waa firm at the opening and prices
were early advanced a small fraction,
the market eased oft later, closing un
changed on September and lower on de
ferred futures. Continued small receipts
and small acceptances are responsible lor
the early bullish tendency. The visible
supply showed a big uecrease ana this
caused soms short cover, ng.
Primary wheat receipts were 1,184,000
bushels and shipments 111,000 bushels,
against receipts last year of l.lSS.OOO
bushels and ehlprfinnts of 467.000 bushels.
Corn receipts were 111.000 buahels and
shipments 4ft. 000 bushels, against re
ceipts last year of 680,000 bushels at.d
shipments of 789,000 bushels. Clearances
were IIS, 000 bushels wheat, 10,121 barrels
flour, 11,000 bushels corn and 1,000

Trading In the wheat pit today was ex

The ssme sort of speculative Indifference

deal weather conditions. The market

EARLY MOVEMENT IS IRREGULAR

NEW TORK. Aur- lS.-There waa per
sistent absorption of storks In today's
markets which had the ultimate effect of
lifting prices to a higher average level,
'ihe movement waa halting and Irregular
In the early part of the day and had to
contend with some speculative considera
tions which were given an unfavorable
tenor In the current opinion.
The bulk of the day'a business waa largely
congested In a few speculative favorites,
but thoae of this class which have been
most effective in their sympathetic Influ
ence on the general market were again
brought Into prominence with the result
that the general price movement came Into
accord with them. St. Paul, Union Pacific
and Southern Pacific have demonstrated
their capacity many times recently to
carry the list with them. The buying to
day, which proved Impressive, was calcu
lated to convey the Impression of accumu
lation by well Informed Insiders as to com
ing developments regarding those stocks.
Ihe rumors current wnlch attempted to give
shape to the expected plan for financing
the Pacific coast extension of the St. Paul
to the expected dividend increase pn Un
ion Pacific and to the Inaugural dividend
of Southern Pacific, which rumor today
fixed quite .explloltly at the 4 per cent rate.
An unsettling Influence in the early deal
ings was the break In Brooklyn Rapid
Transit which waa cauaed by the Judicial
decision against the company's right to
collect double fares to Coney Island and
to the disorders which resulted from the
determination to collect the double fare.
The Interborough Metropolitan stocks
moved etrongly away from the Brooklyn
stock influenced by the statlsUca for traffic
for the last quarter over the Manhattan
borough lines and by the reports of earn'
Inn fran Albanv.
The stiffness of the call money market
proved a restraint on the early speculation
and this was relieved by the news that the
bulk of the 1600.000 of gold arrivals in ion
don has been secured for New York. The
effect of the engagement on the London
market was so pronounced as to give warn
ing of possible unfavorable effects from Its
extension which might be reflected again
on the New York market. The price of
gold waa bid up a penny an ounce In Lon
don In order to secure, the gold and money,
and discounts Immediately rose. The stock
market there was also affected by the pros
pect of dearer money and some selling of
securities In New ork for tne account was
the result. There was some easing in the
call loan rate here later In the day. New
York exchange at Chicago recovered to
16 centa discount compared with 26 cents
discount at the closing last -week and 40
centa discount at laat week'a low level.
Some relaxation for the time or tne inte
rior demand upon New York waa thua In
dicated. Hubtrensurv oneratlons also prom
ised some contribution to New York bank
ing sources this week and a delayed eneci
is looked for from the redepostta of govern
ment funda with Interior banka which have
been making since Panama canal bonds
subscriptions. The decline of upwards of
16.000,000 in the value of July agricultural
exports, caused by the heavy tailing off
in tne cotton outgo, was a mcior incnius
assurance for the international exenange
situation. The small effect on the pro
visions Item of the beef packing agitation
waa considered (ratifying from the stand
point of the financial markets. The day's
gains were not fully maintained to the last
and the closing waa rather heavy.
Some of the low Interest-nearing Donns
were offered down in sympatny wun tne
lower price level at which the New York

CATTLE Recelnta of cattle tndav
the llghteat for a Monday since the open
ing of the range seaaon, a few over SuO
car being reported here when the market
opened. It waa In fact the ilgBteat run
for a Monday since JuJy 16. The receipts
consisted almoat entirely of range cattle.
the most of them on the beef order.
Light receipts and favorable advices from
other selling polnta created a consider-
bly better feeling on the market todsy.
Buyers aa rule were out in good aeason
looking for desirable fat cattle and any
thing that met their vlewa sold anywhere
from ateady to a little stronger than last
week. It was in fsct a good, healthy
market, and the most of the desirable
beeves changed hands In very reaaonable
season.
Cows and helfera were In fair aupply.
considering the total reeelpta, and the mar
ket in very decent ahape. Salesmen as a
rule were quoting it as strong to a little
higher than last week.
Stockers and feeders were acarce all laat
week and there were very few In sight
this morning. Owing to there having been
such s light supply for some daya back
speculators and yard traders were pretty
hungry for good reeders this morning, with
the result that the market on that kind
of cattle waa generally strong . to 10c
higher. Buyera were In the aaddle early
and everything offered changed hands very
readily.

HOQS No greet rhsnge took place In
the market this morning either aa regsraa
prices or a regard to general conuiiloii
of the trade, ihe fact tnat Chicago was
reported a little hlgner and tnat receipts
were by no mean exceaaive gave sellers
some encouragement and they made a
hard struggle to secure a little better
prices than laat week. The fsct, however,
that hog were selling here right at Chl
caao prices made buyera very backward
about putting on anything, with tne re
sult that the market, as noted above,
showed very little change. Aa haa been
the case for some time heck, It wss very
uneven, some hogs selling hlgner ana
other of the asm kind selling lower.
Thu quite a number of tne light hogs
which happened to look good to tne buyeis
sold a little higher. In some cases aa
much aa 6c higher, while other loada of
firactlcaily the same kind actually sold
ower than last week. Heavy hogs were
generally quoted aa steady, but they, too,
were uneven, and nogs 01 practically tne
aame quality and weights sold at a con
siderable range of prices. Tne top today
16.16 was 6c higher then anything
brought Saturday, but, aa will be noted
from tne sales peiow, tne numoer 01 nogs
selling above 10.00 was comparatively
small.
The week etarts out with th market
SOtfMc lower than last Monday.
After Ihe more urgent orders were filled
the msrket eased off and closed very slow
and lower. This w especially true of
light hog. The buyorr who hsd been tak
ing the Tight hogs seem to get their orders
filled, snd Ihe last ten or fifteen loarte
sold with all the morning s atrengtn lost
and more, too. In fsct. light hogs wound
up considerably lower than Saturday.

BHEEP Receipt of sheep were quite
liberal tma morning, hut unfortunately
there were too many of one kind, a consid
erable proportion of the arrivals consisting
of old wethers, some of them good, but
quite a number none too desirable.
The market waa alow, largely for tha
reason that there were more fat sheep
than pickers seemed to care for. Aa to
prices the market might be quoted
steady to a little lower In spota Lambs
were especially alow, packera for some rea
son or other not appearing to need very
many.
Feeder wero In light supply and were In
very lair aemana at ruuy steady prlcea.
It was, In fact, unfortunate that a larger
proportion of the reeelpta did not consist
of feeders, aa th general market . would
unquestionably have been more active had
sucai peen tne case.
