The figures, which have Just been com-,
piled by Secretary McVann, show receipt
of 8,877.000 bushels for the month Just
closed, while for July of last year tM
amount received waa 1,812,000 bushel.
The greater part of this Increase I due
to the earlier movement of wheat, only
444,000 bushels of which came to Omaha,
in July of 1906, as against 2.226.200 bush
els for July of 190S. Corn and oat hov
slight Increases.
On account of the fact that througa
July the local shippers were holding
their grain to take advantage of the low
tariffs east in August, the shipments for
July this yenr Were but little In excess of
last year, the figures being 1,895,500 bush
els and 1,563,600 bushels. Receipts for
June of this year were 8,108,200 bushel
and shipments 2,445,000 bushels.

SCALPERS BLAME RAILROADS

Ticket broker In a legal warfare with
the railroads make affidavit that this has
been the common Injunction given them by
the railroads for years and declare "but
for the railroads' aid we could not have re
mained in business these years." J. J.
Philbln In his testimony stated he and other
brokers were frequently furnished by th
railroads with "notransferable" ticket with
the direction to fill in fictitious name in
order that tbe roads might obtain business
over competing lines.
These are some of the developments in
the case wherein the railroads are seeking
to have the ticket broker enjoined by tha
federal court Judge J. M. Carland of
Sioux Falls Is presiding in the absence of
Judge Munger.
The plaintiff railways are the Union Pa
cific, Northwestern, Rock ( Island, Chicago
Great Western, Burlington; Illinois Central
and Milwaukee. The defendants are J. J.
Philbln, Philip H. Philbln Ed Murphy and
the Ticket Brokers' association representa
tive both In Omaha and Lincoln.
The contention of the railroads I that
their business Is seriously damaged through
the sale of ticket by broken and scalp
ers, and that they frequently algn the
name of others than the original purchas
er of the nontransferable tickets to such
tickets, thereby committing a fraud.
The ticket brokers claim they have been
In business In Omaha from twenty to thirty
yeara, engaged In handling these ticket
with the full consent of the railroads and
to grant the prayer of the railroads at this
time would destroy the business of the
ticket broker and compel them to seek
other lines of business. In one of the affi
davits It 1 admitted that the name of other
than the original purchaser of a nontrans
ferable ticket was signed to such ticket by
tha broker, but that It was authorised by
the railroads and that he had been fre
quently solicited to sell such tickets and
had been furnished such tickets.
Practically all of Monday was devoted to
the reading of the several affidavits and
petitions, of which there are a large num
ber filed by both the railroads and tha
brokers. The case will not go to argument
until Tuesday.

training school for nurses connected with
the county hospital. These cxerclsee will
be held In district court room No. 1 August
23 and Invitation will be Issued to the
public to attend them. Superintendent
Ferrar, who will be In general charge,
promises an entertaining and instructive
program for tha public.
Chairman Tralnor of the county hospital
committee will preside. The opening ad
dress will be by Father Hopkins and will
be followed by addresses by Chairman
Brunlng of the board and Dr. Bummer.
Then will come demonstration of bed
making, with and without patients; ban
daging and bathing of babies. These will
be followed by the presentation of dip
lomas and pin and addresses by those in
terested. The graduates are: Jennie E. Vawter,
Katherlne Kelly. Lillian Maullk, Edna B.
Grave and Edith M. Andrew.

learn their papers are good and will not
have to be taken out anew. In many of
the courts of the country, It is reported, th
new provisions of the 1903 law were not
complied with and In all such cases th
papers will have to be taken out again
under the new law which goea Into effect In
September.
The law of 1903 was passed Just after the
assassination of President McKlnley, and
it provided an addition to th oath taken
by the applicant for cltlsenahlp. The new
oath Is to the effect he doe not belong to
any anarchistic organisation and Is not op
posed to all forms of government. A num
ber of the courts Issuing papers did not
conform to the new law, but according to
Deputy Clerk Gallagher of the Douglss
county district court the new provision
have been complied with since th law
went into effect.
