But a striking power of absorption was again demon strated and strength revived in the mar ket tn the Interval of the selling. The tone of speculative sentiment largely influenced by the movement of special stocks, owing to the conviction among operator that they were follownlg the leadership of powerful groups ot cap italists in taking a cue from the move ments of these stocks. There was very general confidence that far-reaching plans. Involving both corporation finance and stock market operations, were reflected In the movements of the market. Explicit assertion were made of the certainty of Important dividend Increases to be made and of other plans to offer attraction to stockholders, and It was argued tnat a concerted determination to awaken an active interest in the securities markt was thus a seasonable d ductlon to bs drawn from the course of leading capi talists. The desirability of a more active demand for ecuntlea to take off large accumulations In the hand of bankers and syndicates or to help In the flotation of new offerings which are seen to b In evitable Is so well known and recognliod as to give plausibility to the current as- sumption. The more immeniaie m mm today's market wa plainly affected by the large reauetion or me snore inirn-m which resulted from the advance of yes terday, caused by the unexpected actio'! of the steel corporation directors In re suming dividends on the common stock. The strong uplift to the market also of fered attractive opportunities for tHklng profits on the part of those who bought heavllv last week when the rise was still In an Incipient' stage. The rarlrt ri" f St. Paul early In the day and a later dem onstration in Readlna were haru..' ,i to offset these influences. The aggressive strength In the Harrlman Pacifies proved more effective and served to restore the feeling of confidence that abundant mean .-r hn-u of the movement to stimulate a speculation. St. Paul was the center of all kind of rumors, Including a rumor of an 8 per cent dividend guarantee on the stock for control of Union Pacific anil Southern Pacific, or supposed .competitive buving in the open market, supposedly y the present control and the I'nlnn Pnclfle Interests. The air was filled with rumors of dividend Increases also, pointing espe cially to Cnlon Pacific, Southern Pacific, Atchison, Norfolk & Western. Chesapeake A Ohio, Pressed Steel Car, and so on quite indefinitely. , Little attention was paid to general de velopment. Foreign exchange continued to linden. Money on call continued eay, although there was some calling of large loans reported. The sub-treasury took large sums from the market on account of a payment or a note oi inn cn -clfic falling due and of payments of suD scilptions to Panama canal bond. Penn sylvania's good showing of June net earn ings helped the stock and the cut In pas senger fares on the system was disre garded. The adjournment of directors meetings without anticipated action did not ruffle the confidence of operator and the late market showed no more than the ordinary effects of room profit-taking, with the closing generally trong and ac- UVBond were easr "'' "''. r value, 11,923,000. The fsct Is the msrket wss so uneven, both yesterday and todsv. that a seller's opinion of the market depended entirely upon what time he sold yesterday gnd now he got In today. To call the market 6c lower thnn the best time vesterdav. or not far from steady with the extreme low point of yes terdav, would suit the Ideas of a gnod many. On the other hand, there were a few who were calling light hogs very nearlv steady with yesterdsy. but all were agreed that heavy hogs were fully 6c lower. The facts In the case were that the mar ket waa unevenly lower, the decline, amounting to anywhere from a shade to a good big 5c, according to the kind of hogs and according to the time of day when comparisons were made. The trade waa very slow at ins oecune Indicated and It was late before any busi ness of Importance waa transacted. When nuyers ana seners nnsiiy got wT rr on a trading basis the movement llvenen up somewhat, so that practically everything was sold by 10:30. As wilt b noted from the sales below, light hogs sold Isrgely at I615SI4.20 and on up as high as I3.27H for very good stuff. Heavy hogs dropped below WOO, selling all the way from 15.9"). Mixed hog, as a mat. ter of course, sold between the heavies and the light. The market has been lower every dar for eight days In succession, and. barring little reaction on Monday and Tuesdav f last week, the tendency hss been stead1!" downward ever since July 18. Thi waa lea than half the usual Thursday a run. The heavy fall in nrf In the receipts may be directly traced to the severe break in the market consequent upon the excessive receipt of M nviitn V There were not enough beef steer In the yard thi morning to really make a mar ket, the supply being limited largely to a few acatterlng loads of corn-fed beeve with a little sprinkling of westerns. Owing to the very email offering, the feeling, If nvthinav on the deairauie killers wa a little better than yesterday. Still, It would hardly do to call the market any higher. A few of the best cow and heifer sold early at fully yesterday price, but the a-eneral market on he stuff wa extremely slow and dull. Common kind especially were very much neglected and holdera of such In many case found It very low work unloading at anything like Heady prices. Fortunately the supply of stocker and feeder was light, aa the ipertacular de mand I never very good during the last half of the week. Had there been any right good feeder possibly they would have old all right, but the common to medium kinds were absolutely neglected, no one wanting them, and holder had a big strug gle to unload at lower prices. ttepreaentaiive saiea: BEKF STEERS.
