fest some repressive Influence on tha
movement. While the rlsa waa thua
checked, there was no urgent pressure
the level was little disturbed, in splto or
the decided decrease In the demand fir
stocks which la made clear by the shrink
age n tha total dealings for the day.
During tha buying movement of ths first
hour there were advances of a point or
more In a number of the transcontinental
railroad storks Pennsylvania, Amalga
mated Copper and a few storks not of first
Importance. Stocks which came out an
the advance of some of tha selling wis
attributed to bear account. The profes
sional element was Inclined to taxe tha
short side on the ground that the advaiic
had run to some length and Invited re
action, especially as tha outside demand
which appeared yesterday, as the week
end dealings were pronounced to be lay
slgnlflcant.
It was after the rlss of th first hour
had halted that Consolidated Mas de
veloped sggresslve strength, recovering all
of yesterday's decline and selling at ths
high figure of yesterday. The downward
turn In ths market yesterday was at
tributed very largely to the break In Con
solidated Oas, following the announcement
of the suspension of dividends on Brook
lyn I'nion Oas. The Importance attached
to the Incident was due to an assumption
that It represented a nolicv on the I " '
of the Stand.ird Oil party that wa likely
to he extended to other properties to ni"rt
the current agitation against corporation
affairs, and especially In the cane of Con
solidated Oas. owing to the parallel cir
cumstances of that comrany with tho
Brooklyn company. The action of tha
stock today was regarded as refutation
of that supposition, although no statement
on tne sunject was rortncoming irom 1 n
executive committee, after thla meetlnff
todav.
The msrket showed no Immediate re
vival after the apparent removal of this
cause of yesterday's unesslness. Intereit
became torpid and the price movements
exceedingly sluggish. This was partlcu-

stocks, which wero held In reserve ai
parentlv for leadership of the later move
ment. It Is doubtful whether the quar
terly statement of the net earnings of tho
ccmpanv contained any notable e irn'U
for those who have been dealing actively
In the stocks. The statement did not ap
pear In time tn enable the facts to be used
at first hand In the market operations of
the day. But as the time for the as
sembling of tho directors arproached,
large transactions In Cnlted States Steel,
common, appeared on the tape nnd Its
price was carried up to 40, which wn
the objective foretold by the speculative
sponsors for the market movement.
The weather bureau's weekly crop bul
letin was noncommltsl, as usual, but con
tained nothing to shake the present con
viction of the excellent progress of tho
crops. The money msrket was not affected
by the monthly settlements, which are
not Important for August, but forelg.i
exchange moved up another step and awa.r
from the gold Import level. The inflam
matory condition reported from Russia
was without effect here, or so far as per
ceptible nhroad, where some confidence
seemed to be restored over the psvments
to be made tomorrow on subscrlntloe- to
the last Russian loan. The late movement
In Vnlted States Steet carried prices 10
the high level of the first hour, or above,
and held them there to a Arm closing.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sale. n-r

tactics and are pounding the market at
every opportunity. That is not onlr the
case here, but at everv other selling point.

to be due to the general feeling thai nogs
are and have been for some time selling
too high. Cn ths other hand, In spits Of s.l

IXDNDON, July 31s-.Money was In re
stricted supply, good demand and dearer
today. Discounts were, firm. On the Stock
exchange dealings wej-e restricted with the
approach of the holidays, but earlv weak
ness and uneasiness regarding the Psrls
settlement gave way to a firmer close. Con
sols recovered from an esrly decline, but
home rails sagged. Russlsns hardened
after weakness In the forenoon. Americans
were somewhat uncertain. The small
amount of business transacted In the fore
noon was barely sufficient to lift prices to
over parity. Later, with New York buying,
the market Improved and prices closed
steady at a fraction below the bst quota
tlons of the day. Kaffirs were dull while
swsltlng the government's stand In the
House of Commons regarding the Tran
vsal constitution. Japanese Imperial As of
1SKH closed at 102.
PARIS. July 31. Prices on the Bourse to
day opened henvv owing:, to a number of
forced Sales of Russians. Later Russians
strengthened on the prcspects of an early
formation of a ministry and closed firm.

CATTLE Receipts ot csttls were fair for
a Tuesday. 166 cars being reported in when
the market opened, but the run looksj
small compared to the 340 cara received
yesterday. It might be added that th
official recount shows the receipts yester
day to have bsen the largest of sny day
since Februsry 27, when 841 ears wr re
ported in. With tha excention of that day
ft was the heaviest since November 1 of
last year.
As noted yesterday, the large reeelpta and
the heavy break at other market points
demoralised values to a large extent at thl
point, so that yesterday's market was th
worst experienced here in a long time. Cat
tle of all kinds sold lower and the trade
wss dull ven at the decline. As showing
the estent of th decline some of th sam
cattle sold 60c lower yesterday than they
brought one week ago. After such a stilt
break tn values It was only natural to e
nert som difference In the opinion of
sellers as to prices today. They were, how
ever agreed that the market waa no worse
today; In other words, that values wsr
generally steady with yeaterday. In some
cases sellers even thought that they would
be a little better today on ths more de
sirable of their holdings.
Cows and heifers also sold 8 bout steady,
there being no further downward move
ment In vaiuea, at , loaat, nun wurviiy ui
mention. ... ,, .
The supply of feeders was smsll snd they
were about steady at yesterday's decline.
