Congressman Charles A. Towns of New
York, candidate for vice president on the
Bryan ticket In 1900, was an Omaha visitor
for a short while Tuesday morning, taking
breakfast at the Paxton hotel. - Mr. Towne
left at 1:46 o'clock for Glen wood, la.,
where he spoke Tuesday afternoon. Mr.
Towne declined to be Interviewed on poli
tics, lie Is a Tammany man and he re
fused to say what Tammany would do In
, the Hearst gubernatorial campaign.
Charles A. Towne has had a varied career
In politics. He first came lniu prominence
as a Minnesota congressman from the
Duluth district, . wiilch the Inimitable J.
Adam Beds now represents, Duluth being
ills old home. He waa a republican then
and remained such until the campaign of
1N6, when he, with John IJnd and other
Minnesota republicans, swltohed over, first
calling themselves silver republicans. Find
ing no permanent shelter as "silver repub
licans" they became democrats. And Towne
lost his seat In congress. He rsn for It
aa a democrat, but Page Morris, now fed
eral 'Judge In Duluth, beat him. Towne's
friends declared he had committed political
suicide and he is said to have formed a
high opinion later of their Judgment. He
waa the acknowledged leader for the next
vacancy In the 4'nlted States senate until
' he changed hia politics and here Is where
one . of those strange freaks of political
affairs comes In.

for him In the North, Star stats and yet
he was the next man sent from Minnesota
to the United States senate. He succeeded
Cukmn K. Pavla In the winter of 1901,
but his tern was of brief duration.

Moses K. Clapp, elected by the republican
legislature after an interesting contest,

His running .for vice president In 190O Is
a bit of political history that helped along
the crnsy-qullt record.
Towne then plunged Into the oil business
at Beaumont. Tex.. Then ho went to New
Tork, giving the Impression he was through
with politics and rumors floated out over
the country that he had amassed a fortune
and was a pluto. But It wasn't long till
the familiar voice and the familiar name
of "Charley Towne" were wafted with
their magic charm from one end of the
political arena to the other and Tammany
put him In congress.
"We think the action of Nemaha county
indicates the nomination of Congressman
Pollard," said Representative Wlndhsm of
Cass county, floor leader of ths house In
the last legislature. "Of course, there Is
some talk of Lncastsr county wavering
t the last In Its support of him, but his
friends scarcely look for a repudiation of
its pledge by Incaster.
' "Senator Sheldon, we think, has a good
chance for the nomination for governor;
we think a little better chance than any of
his opponents. Personally I believe Shel

reaaon to suppose he would not continue
along the same lines of faithful service.
"Cass county has done nothing toward
the selection of Its candldstes for the leg
islaturethat Is, ths republican havs not.
Personally, I have decided not to b a
candidate for the house nor senate. I ex
pect to see new and unknown men In
politics picked out for both branches."
It Is known from outside sources that
Mr. Windham was assured by the repub
lican leaders of Cass county that he could
have his choice of the nomination for ths
house or senate, and would receive the
unqualified support of the party for either,
but he declined the honor.
Edgar Howard of Columbus Is an Omaha
visitor, being one of the editorial pilgrims
to the shrine of Ak-Sar-Ben Monday
night:
"Political matters are a little quiescent
up In Platte county," he said, "even
though the Platte county democrats are
claimed to have endorsed the candidacy
of George W. Berg for governor up there
the other day. The sentiment was wholly
a manufactured one, and does not reflect
the democratic, sentiment In Platte county
Dy any means, it wss a case or snap
Judgment and will cut no figure politically
with the democrats of that section."
DAHLMAN TO MEET BRYAN
Mayor of Omaha on Committee of
Reception at Madison,

Mayor Dahlman haa received notification
from Il Nixon, the democratic leader
of New Tork, that he has been ap
pointed on the Bryan reception committee,
of which Governor Folk Is chairman. The
mayor also is In receipt of a letter from
Norman B. Mack, chairman of the na
tional executive committee, asklug htm as
national committeeman from Nebraska to
appoint a delegation of ten from this state.
The mayor has not yet picked out the
delegation.
He and Mayor Brown of Lincoln are In
correspondence regarding plans for the
Journey of Nebraskans who will swell the
crowd at Madison Square Garden August
80. It Is about settled that a special Bleep
ing car will be chartered for the demo
crats from the Antelope state and appli
cation has been made for seventy-five
tickets at the reception. Mayors Dahlman
and Brown are the two focal points about
which the Nebraska contingent will gather
and both will recruit for disciples of
Bryan who have the desire and the means
to run down to Manhattan when his ship
comes in.
