NEW YORK, July 30-The speculstlve j iiiinemeni tor tne rise In stocks encoun tered some difficulties todsy In the amount of stock for sale 10 realise profits, which j are made attractive by the considerable ad vances achieved last week. Monday morn ing Is a lavortte occasion for profit-taking I In a bull movement, owing to a well- grounneu propensity to embark on new brings a larger Installment of new bnvln ordeis into the market at thla time than at any other. Apparently the speculative tendency will lie dormant for a lime, while professions! operators are busy with the market, and will be awakened Into action by the consideration of week end sum marlca. The accumulation of buying orders over a week end Is always watched for by speculative holders to afford a market for absorbing profit-taking sales. The msnner In which these are absorbed is regarded as an Important Index of the tone of the market. The buying orders on hand this morning from outside sources were not of imposing proportions, according to the com plaints of commission houses. The supply ing of stocks was done with care and the market was taken care of by skilful hsnd llng, so that small Impression wss made upon prices There were influential ad vances in special stocks st the same time which served as sustaining effects on the general list. The renewed advance in Southern Pacific to the hiaheat nolnt on the movement was a notable example. The disturbing effect of the evidence of profit taking was much aggravated by a slump In Consolidated Uss. when the official an nnuncement was made that the Brooklyn 1'nion Oaa msnagement had determined to suspend the payment of dividends until further notice. The possible had effect upon the securities of the measure and agitation directed against corporations has been much In the mind of the market operatore up to the recent rise In stocks, since which time It has been relegated to the background. Chicago reporting 61.000 early, with the market a big 10c lower. Under the Influence of dlacourag Ing reports of that character the market at this point opened slow and generally ty 10c lower than the close of last week. Sell ers made a strong fight against the de cline, but with everything sgainst them thev were forced to give in at the decline Indicated. It was late, however, before the buvers and sellers got together, snd sllll later before anything like a clearance was effected. The market closed slow and wesk at the low point of the day. The arrivals consisted almost en tirely of grass westerns, with only a small sprinkling of cornfed steers. Ths trade, as a whole, was slow and practicavl'y everything waa lower. With lsrge offerings of range beef In sight packers were ln a position where they could afford to take their time In making selections. The further fact that many of the trains were late delayed the opening of the market very materially.- It was therefore later than usual beforo buy ers rtarted out, and the foreuoon was well advanced before anything in the way of business was sccompllshed. While some of ths best steers perhaps did not show quite that much decline, the market on the general run of tha recelpta waa lul&c lower than the close of lsst week. The de cline was plainly due to the large receipts and to the lower market reported at other selling points. There were more cows and heifers In ths yards this morning than have been seen here In a long time, the most of them grass westerns, with only a sprinkling of native stuff. Cows and heifers, aa was ths case with beef steers, were slow and gen erally lu16c lower than the close of last week. It will be remembered that ths market on that kind of cattle broke badly last week, being quoted 26tj40c lower at the close. For that reasons sellers who did not have anything the latter part of last week were quoting today's market even a good deal more than 10al6c lower. Some of the best feeders did not sell much lower, but the feeder market at this point haa been very high, ln fact, there has been a feeling tnat the market whs too high, and today, with the receipts the lsrgest that they have been this season, the market broke badly and medium kinds were anywhere from 16&26c lower. The trade was slow st the decline, sellers being backward about taking on and buyers be No. 14... 4S... it... 44... tt... t... It... 41 .. tt... ft... tt... 11.. 44.. 41.. 40.. II.. 44.. 41.. 14..
