SHARP ADVANCE IN UNITED STATES STEEL Bank Statement Prove rUa oolntment and Ptssssseei Reaction Follow It Appearance. NEW TORK, July 28 Th peculaUve movement wa not actively pursued dui Ing today short session at the Stock ex change, but protective measure for the market was evidently in force. The move ment waa rather alugglsh and Irregular and the price level was held up by the me dium of some new advances at points not conspicuous during the week. The stocks selected were mostly In the class of Indus trials and specialties, especially amongst the metal Industrie and coalers. me stocks of the great transcontinental rail roads and the trunk rallroada were com paratively quiescent, but not under active pressure. Dealings continued very large In United States Steel and that stock rose to within a email fraction of 40, which had been promised to It for thl weeK Dy ine speculative sponsors. Amalftamated Cop lr and the Smelling and Lead stock were etrong and the volatile high-priced coaler made characteristic rugnia. The bank statement proved a disappoint ment and was followed by a pronounced reaction in prices The csh item snowea only about half the expected Increase, and a the deposit item was sweneo. in huui tlon by loan Increase of nearly $18,700,000, the surplus was slightly encouraged upon by the added requirement. The loan ex pansion was a reminder of the needs of an extensive stock market campaign. ine changes In the money situation, nowever, are evidently not sufficient to affect the Immediate ease of call money. There 1 an expectatloi also In speculative quarter that urplu resources of the United States treasury will be held In readiness to protect the money market from any dangerous stringency during the fall. Sup port was forthcoming at the reaction after the bank statement and some stocks ral lied vigorously to the best of the day. The closing tone was Irregular. WOOLr-Per lb, Uisf20 Total 113 CATTLE Receipts of cattle today were limited to about one car, the market, a4 usual on a Saturday, being practically bare of offerings of all kinds. The total re celnts this week show a very considerablo gain over Inst week aa well aa over a year ago, ine total naving oem usual at this point during July. This has k.u.. Hmji i tha fart that in addition to th usual suddIv of fed steers a number of trains ot western grass beeves have ar- .l,ra nn the market. 1 The demand for strictly good to choice rnrLfprt steers has been, aulte active all ih. finnlt snd cattle of that description, not withstanding the large receipts have been good sellers from start to finish. Still, the plentiful supply had some influence and it ih elnuo nf the week even the good kinds of cattle are possibly 10(f,'15c lower than laat week. The liberal uupply of rmiM heef had a verv depressing effect upon the market for the medium kinds of cornfed gteera, which suffered, as usually happens, when they come into competition with good grass beef. The result ot tnii nornnriitlnn was a steadily declining mar ket, so that at the close of tho week such heef cattle as were selling at $5.30 and downwards are 25&40C lower. The market on cows and heifers Imitated the steer market very closely, that Is, the btst grades suffered little decline for the week, not to exceed P'315c. On the other hand, the common and grassy native cows and heifers snd everything on the cannrr and cutter order declined fully toff 40c dur ing the week. Veal calves eased off a little during the week, but still, the best have sold right tip to $3.78 on most days. The best fat bulls and good feeding bulls have sold all right, but other kinds have been going steadily down hill along with other common kinds of cattle. A little more life was developed In the stocker and feeder trade thla week and the market on the best grades was prac tically steady from start to finish. The common and medium grades, however, seemed to be In poor demand and were bard to work off, so much so that they are generally quoted KKtil&o lower for the "sek. . . . . HOGS It was a see-saw market today tip at one end and down at the other. Light hogs were pretty generally 2ic higher than yesterday, In fac t, some sales men thought they sold hogs as much ai4 5c higher. The demand was very fair for the desirable loads and the big bulk of thhe offerings of that kind changed hands in very reasonable season, the moat of the desirable light weight selling from $6.50 upwards, with a top at $4 67.. " Willie llgtlt nogs were gums; up, neavy parking lings were going nown, ine mar ket on that kind being low and anywhere from weak to 6c lower on the openlrg. The trade was very dull at the decline, packers not appearing to care whether they fot the heavlor hogs or not. Instead of mprovlng. The receipts of sheep this week have been quite liberal as compared to previous weeks, but are considerably ahort of the record for the correRpondtng week of last year. The arrivals have consisted entirely of western rangers. The demoralliatlon prevailing In the eaatern mutton market and the heavy declines In the eaatern lamb and sheep markeis have had their effect at this point. The decline here, however, has been somewhat lessened the very good demand for feeders, so that, while prices are lower, shippers have actually suffered very little loss at this point, for while packers were bidding lower the feed ers were paying steady prices. I.nnbs felt the most decline and are safely 2yu0oc lower than a week ago. At the present time It would be hardly aafe to quote spring lambs about $7.26. Fat wethers, yearlings and ewes might be quoted 2fio lower, as packers would In sist on taking off fully that much. A good, brisk demand for feeders sprung up this week and the feed buyers have stood ready to take anything that packers did not want. In fact, on FTldav. when packers were the most bearish In their views, the feeder buvera hnuiht nretlv much everything, paying fully steady and In some cases even strong prices, so tnut as noted above, the break In the market for fat sheep did not cause ship pers any material loss. The feeding at this point Is very good, notwithstanding the severe break In the eastern markets for fat stuff. The general nnlnlon .m tn be that with such an abundance of feed In tne country there will be a steady de mand for feeders, which will keep the market for all kinda In a iri.rwt h.althv UtlOtatlonS- llnnA In rl.nl. n.ln. 1.V.. $ .i5(Ii.25; fair to good Bniina- Limha 1C OtvfT kuuii ill rnrb i'a va p mya .-... lair 10 enon vmr hin Ii r:Z. t . , .
