DREYFUS' COUSIN AS A WAITER
Strang; Career of nelatlva f
French nfllper Now In
Chicago.
lyiuls Dreyfus, a cousin of Captain Al
fred Dreyfus, Is employed as head waiter
at the Coliseum In Chicago. The fortunes
of the Dreyfus family, as related by tha
ChlcHgonn, prove that the celebrated pris
oner of Devil's Island, If the most unfor
tunate. Is not the only one of his nam
to experience strange vicissitudes
Louis Dreyfus was born and educated In
the town of Milhausen in the province of
Alsace, where his father was a wealthy
manufacturer of cordials, the town was
also the birthplace and home of his more
famous cousin and the two families grew
up side by side until war and fortune or
dained for them widely different fates. Al
fred Dreyfus was parly In life destined for
a military career and with that end In
view was entered as a pupil in a French
military school. His cousin and the lat
ter's three brothers were educated alone;
commercial lines. Then came the war of
1S72 and the prpvlnce of Alsace became a
pnrtlon of the German empire. The two
families took different sides. Alfred Drey
fus, as nn embryo officer of the French,
army, carried the sympathies of his peo
ple to France. Louis Dreyfus' family
adopted the engle of the connuerer.
It would appear that tho dominant trait
of the Dreyfus family was militarism, for
on reaching manhood Louis Dreyfus and
his brothers, Carl and Emll, entered the
German army, abandoning the peaceful
commercial career which their father had,
planned for them. They soon found that
the bitter snd Ignorant prejudice which
was at a later day to martyrise their
French cousin and cause such a foul blot
on the military escutcheon of France, ex
isted to a far greater extent in the Ger
man army.
"The French people are not naturally
bigoted or narrow-minded," Is Louis Drey
fus' comment, "but in the German army
It Is absolutely Impossible for a Jew t
became an officer. Of course the law of
fers no objection, but his brother offloers
would hound a Hebrew from their ranks.
Recently the son of one of the wealthiest
Jewish bankers In Berlin entered the Ger
man army as an officer. He was com
pletely ostracized and treated with so
much contumely that he was forced to
resign."
Louis Dreyfus' fourth brother served
with distinction In the Boer army in the
South African campaign and was created
adjutant general. Louis himself finding
German army life far from congenial left
Germany to seek his fortune In America,
of which country he has become a natural
ized citizen. A Jew by blood and religion,
a Frenchman by birth, a German by tha
stern law of the ronaueror and an Ameri
can by choice, a French merchant, a Ger
man soldier and an American waiter, such.
Is the epitomized career of the Chicago
cousin of Captain Dreyfus. Chicago
Chronicle.
SHARKS SWAM AROUND HIM
Tbrlllluur Kaperlrnce of a Dopey
Sailor Overboard In the
Gulf of Aden.
When the German steamship Llebenfels
left Bombay there were thlrty-Blx Lascars
in its crew, but there came an addition
to the ranks of tho dark vlsagud tiremen
In a most unexpected manner when tha
steamship was passing through the Gult
of Aden. Chief Engineer Hensel made
the discovery and, at the same time, waa
the means Of saving the life of one Mara
Hassan Bin, erstwhile a sailor on a
British steamBhlp passing through tha
gulf eastward bound. The extreme heat
of the stoke hole had made Mara Hassan
"dippy," as he himself later acknowledged,
and he had dived overboard at night with
suicidal attempt. The plunge brought
him to his senses, but he was swimming
about in a big sea, with no land in sight,
and hope seemed almost useless.
As the Llebenfels was passing up tha
gulf, bound for Suez, Chief Hensel, who
had turned in shortly before midnight
and could not sleep owing to the oppres
sive atmosphere, heard a faint cry In tha
distance that seemed to come across tha
gulf. Then he heard the well-known cry
of "Allah! Allah!" coming over tha
waters. It Is the plaintive prayer of every
Musselnian sailor, and Hensel knew that
some Lascar was on the sua and wanted
help.
Captain Wltterman stopped the ship
and played his searchlight on the sea
until ho made out the frowsy head of a
Lascar. Those on the Llebenfels declare
that there were sharks all about the man,
but it is a well-known fact that sharks
draw the color Hue sharply.
The mysterious swimmer was hauled
aboard and between his moans for "Allah"
managed to tell his story. He had been
swimming around in the Gulf of Aden
for over four hours, a most unheard of
thing, and had lived to tell the story.
Mara Hassan was put to work as a sslISr,
which work tie performed in good shape
on board the German boat when ha was
not praying to Allah by throwing himself
down on the deck at unexpected moments.
On one occasion on the way up the Atlan
tic Mara Hassan prostrated himself sud
denly while carrying a tray filled with,
viands for the captain's dinner, snd tha
trap and its contents were a sorry sight.
61a ra Hassan recovered his mental fac
ulties gradually from tha day that he waa
rescued and declared, upon his arrival
here, that he would never again tempt
fate In the Gulf of Aden, where tha
sharks, even if they do not touch a black
man, make swimming decidedly uncom
fortable. Brooklyn Eagle.
