Prices on Board of Trade.
CHICAGO, July 16. Liberal recelpU had
a weakening effect today on the local
wheat market, but talk of a heavier de
mand by exports caused a steady tone at
the' close, final quotations on the Septem
ber delivery being practically - unchanged.
September corn was oft c. Oats were
down So. Provisions were a shade to
lUn lower. .
The wheat market exhibited considerable
weakntais during the first part of the ses
sion oa selling by cash houses and local
longs, who were Induced to part with their
hol.llnss because of continued heavy re
ceipts of wheat at Chicago. A moderate
decline in the price of wheat at Liverpool
helped to encourage additional selling on
the local market. Another reason that
waa aiven for the selling pressure was a
fear of still larger receipts here aa a result
of a cut in freight rates on grain between
Kansaa City and Chicago. The market con
tlnued weak until the last hour, when i
fair rally occurred following talk of con
siderable export business done at New
York. Reports of rust in the wheat fields
of North Dakota had some effect in cre
ating the firmer feeling. Practically all of
the early loss was regained and the market
closed steady. September opened Vk&c
' lervsrreas use ta sola on to .700
and then advanced to 76eaiti4c. Final
quotations were at 76S4S6Sc. Clearances
of Wheat and flour were equal to 242,700 bu.
Primary receipts were Llwi.OOO bu.. com
pared with 02.0u0 bu. the corresponding
day one year ago. Minneapolis. Duluth and
Chicago reported receipt of cars,
against 550 cars last week and 434 cars s
year ago.
Partial relief from drouth conditions In
the corn belt caused weakness In the corn
market, sentiment in the pit being bearish
all day. Prominent bulls were moderate
sellers and pit traders also sold quite
freely. Large primary receipts which
caused a break In the price of corn had
a weakening influence on options. The
market closed weak with prices at the
lowest point. September opened Vo to c
lower at 61c to 6iyjC, sold off to 60"c
and closed at GOV.. Loral receipts were
l'K cars, with fifty-four of contract grade.
Reports of more liberal acceptances
reused weakness In the oats market. The
slump In the price of cotton was also a
bearish factor. A heavy tone prevailed
throughout the entire seaslon and prices at
the close were almost at the lowest point.
September opened unchanged to c lower
at S3o to Sic, sold off to Sic and closed
at &3o. Local receipts were 60 cars.
The feature of trading in provisions waa
a sharp break In the price of September
pork. The decline occurred on initial trans
actions and waa due to profit taking by
local holders. Later part of the loss was
recovered. The weakness of grain had a
depressing effect on the market. At the
Clone September pork was off 12Wc at 117.10.
Lard was down 2Hc at fi.90. Ribs were
a shade lower at tiM7Vi.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat,
3.12 cars; corn, 116 cars; oats, 84 cars; hogs,

NEW YORK. July 2. -Speculative senti
ment showed itself sensitive siill to the in
fluence ot the Harrlman and Mandard Oil
favotltea, or what Is equally effectual, what
arc accepted aa favorites of those powerful
flnanclsi forces. Yesterday the general
market advanced because southern Paclttc,
I nion Pacific snd St. Paul were strong.
hen these stocks were seen today to be
subjected to a process of market digestion
and of diligent selling on sll favorable
opportunities there was a revulsion from
tne feeling created yesterday by the sg-
gresslve buying of these stocks, ins sus
picion was aroused that the so-called news
regarding these stocks was a result of the
buying and not tne cause oi it. i ne u-
ers who were employed to buy tne stocss
named yesterday gave the Impression that
the Harrlman and Standard Oil interests
were buying enormous blocas of these usual
favorites, and this belief wss strongly
prevalent throughout the stock exchange
neighborhood. 1 he reports of an early div
idend declaration on Southern Pacific, with
resulting benefit to Union Pacific from Its
large holdings of the former stock, found
readv credence from the movement of the
stocks. Today many of the same persons
who accented these re no Ms were skeptical.
snd expressed the conviction that the whole
movement was skillful manipulation oy
James R Keene The faith in the St
Paul plan which was to be promulgated
as a result of the return from Europe
of William Rockefeller, and which was
lmnllcltlv sccenled yesterday, was shaken
aa-aln in lace of tne sewing on oi mm
stock, and the msrket fell into an apath
eilr condition soon after the opening to
await the meetlna of St. Paul directors and
advanced strongly on tne nonaction oi mo
plan.
The realising In yesterday's favorite was
obscured for a time by the rising tend
ency of other stocks But these were lees
effective in dominating sentiment than the
ones which were being sold. The most In.
fluentlal support was due to sympathy with
the large buying of United States bieei.
Trade roports from this Industry were
highly encouraging, but this was not tne
pew factor In the market. More Impor
tance waa attached to the news that the
steamship Baltic had been sighted, having
on board J. P. Morgan, and was expected
to dock during the afternoon. The ef
fectiveness of the movement In United
States Steel was marred by the backward
ness of the preferred stock and by the
positive depression of the sinking fund
bonds. The personal element thus is seen
to have played a large psrt In the day's
market. Foreign Influences continued In
favor of higher prices. There was a con
spicuous rally In Russians on the presump
tion that a further smouldering without
an Immediate conflagration might be looked
for In Russian affairs. The Bank of Eng
land reported some deterioration of condi
tion, and there was Improvement shown
bv the Bank of France and the Imperial
Hank of Germany. Foreign exchange con
tlnued to decline here and approached to
gold import point again. The small amount
of the bids and the low prices for the
New York city bonds offered yesterday
were the subject of wide discussion, with
unfavorable effect on the eplnlon of the in
vestment situation. The effect was mani
fest In bonds more than In stocks.
The new upward start in prices came
after the announcement of nonaction by
the St. Paul directors on the supposed
financial plan. This apparently singular ac
tion was based upon a speculative assump
tion that the delay in the St. Paul financ
ing heralded an abandonment of the pro
posed Pacific coast extension and a com
bination with Union Pacific. The marl-ct
closed strong and active all around on this
assumption.
Bonds were heavy. Total sales, par

HOOP Hogs were tinevenly lower thla
mcrnlng and the trade not particularly ac
tive. Yesternav light hogs felt the most
decline, whereas today It was the neary
and rough loads that suffered the worst
On such losds as buyers especially wanted
and on which there was good competition
the decline did not amount to very much,
whereas on the less desirable kinds It s
more pronounced The general market
might he described as about s4c lower
then yesterdsv. The most of the hogs
sold at right around 3 f. the proportion
of loads below that price being larger
than yesterdar. with not so many above.

SHEEP It was one of those dllstory
markets, when everyone stands sround
looking wise and waiting for the other
fellow to make the first move. As the I
other fellow was slow about making any I
move, it was after 10 o clock before onv
business of consequence was trsnsactod.
The truth of the matter Is prices hav
been and still are high for this season of
the year, and at the same time the eastern
mutton market, as a packer expressed it,
"is simply .rotten." Chicago has hett
gradually easing off and all conditions thla
morning pointed to a lower market at tins
point. The fact that the receipts, barring
a few loads, were not very attractive a
that a good many of the sheep came. In
wet from last night's rain convrlbufu tu
the dullness. The day's market on killers
might be summoned up as slow and lower.
An encouraging feature of the market Is
the fact that feeder buyers are beginning
to come In, and, while It is still a little
early to expect them to be very active
buyers, they are beginning to nlhme at the
halt, and unless all signs fail tt will not
be long before the. feeder market will he
In full blast. When that time comes pack
ers are likely to be better buyers of the
fat end of the receipts. Hence, regular
operators on the market are advising their
friends to go a little glow and not Hood
the market with shipments, which can be
deferred until a little later. Buch stuff
aa feeders could use' today sold about
steady.

CATTLE! The cattle trade was dead all
this morning snd the forenoon wss very
well advanced before any business what
ever was transacted. Buyers seemed to
feel that they had been paying too much
tor their oattle at this point, as compared
with other markets, and were determined
to force a reduction or leave the cattle
alone. Their bids were at least loc lower,
even on the good kinds of cattle, and more
than that on the common to meaium
grades. As sailers were not prepared to
take oft without A struggle. It was very
late, as noted above, beiore buyers and
sellers could get together on a trading
basis. Medium to common kinds or cawtu.
such as were selling the nrst or tne week

IH 40c lower than a week ago.
Cows and heifers were slow and lower,
In about the same proportion as beef
steers, and It waa unusually late before
any business was transacted.
Stockers and feeders were In rather
light supply, but they, too, were slow, as
It waa late in the week and yard traders
and speculators had quite a good many on
