The Omaha wholesale: market haS grad
ually livened up after the de;id quiet which
closely followed the Fourth of July holi
days and Jobbers now believe It has readied,
a point where there will lo an Increase
of business from now on, although for a
month the Improve nient will be slight.
Business Is rem.trkablv good, considering
that this Is the middle of what Is known
as the dull season. Cheerful reports have
been received from the country merchants
which Indicate thut they expect the fall
business to he the largest In their history.
That the retailers are keeping their ac
counts pretty closely cleaned up Is Indi
cated by the fact that the Jobbers are
having no difficulty In making collections.
The Implement men are making contracts
for fall and winter, ninny of them being
out In the territory from one week's end
to the oth.-r. They find that there will be
a good business In wagons, corn shellers
and hay balers. Present shipments from
the Implement houses are light, being con
lined largely to buggies and late hav goods,
though the movtment of threshing goods
continues.
Collapse of Tomato Trnat.
The week has shown the final collapss
of the attempt of the tomato syndicate to
control prices. From day to dav the price
has been dropping, until now spot goods
are on a basis of about 6o a dosen over
futures. The latter are also affected and
have declined 6o a doien, so that now they
are about where tlfey were sixty days ago.
The Jobbers do not know whether or not
to expect a further decline. The weather
in the east is favorable for an Immense
growth of vines, 'out is too wet for the very
best results with the fruit.
In corn there Is no chango, either spot
or futures. The cunners are hopeful that
higher vnhies hnve come to say and do not
Intimate that prices can bo shaded. They
arc holding for full prices.
Sugar Is practically the same In price as
It was a week ago, although several slight
declines and advances were noted. The
demand is heavy and the market tlrm. The
syrup and molasses market Is withoutfca.

market Is firmer.
Stocks of coffee at Rio and Santos, await
ing shipment, are said to be much smaller
than last year, and consequently a con

With very few exceptions the rice mills
are cleaned up on Japan grades and prices
are on a very firm basis. Local Jobbers
predict higher prices on then grades.
Prices on California Fruit.
Last Monday prices were received by the
Omaha Jobbers on California canned itouria
or fall delivery. Prices are somewhat
higher than lam season on many Items, .
while on only one or two Hre they lower. f
Apricots run from 25 to 50 cents higher, ac- s
cording to grade. Cherries are about the ' '
same as at the opening hist season, though''
slightly advanced on some grades. Peaches
are 10 cents a dozen' higher on yellow
Crawforda and 16 cents higher on lemon
clings. With most aatiuers pears are
practically the same as lust year. Orders
already placed for goods Indicate that the
packers are nractlcmiy sold up within the
week. Already many Hues have been with
drawn or are advancing, and reports from
all canneries are to the effect that there
has never been such a demand for the
first week after the opening of prices.
Prices on spot goods will of course, be
affected by the advance of future deliver
ies. From every quarter comes the news of a
light yield of peas. The growth of vino is
enormous, but the yield Is lighter than
usual, in many cases not more than 60 pur
cent of the amount estimated some time
ago. Higher prices are hound to rule on
standard and fancy goods, say the Jobbers.
Early purchasers are to be congratulated
If they have made contracts with ahlpptrs
who will till In full.
The market on future dried fruits, pur.
tlcularly prunes and raisins, Is somewhat
easier than ten days ago. An enormous
amount has been sold for early delivery
and It will tax the capacity of the packers
to make deliveries according to contract.
Peahes are Btlll held at high flgurea on the
coast and there Is no difioniilon in this
direction to shade the market. The feeling
la general thot present prices for peaches
are unwarranted by the situation, either
east or west.
BaildlnaT Movement is Large.
Hardware men keep pretty buHy In splto
of the fact thut July and August are poor
months. Builders' hardware, as formerly,
continues to move with more freedom
than other classes of goods, showing that
the building movement Is keeping up over
the country. About the only change Is

on blacksmiths' wrought Iron anvils. Some
advances are expected In other lines, but
more on account of the general higher ten
dency than anything else.

of Omaha dally, all jobbers being ex
tremely busy filling orders on fail goods.
As far as prices are concerned, the market
Is featureless, cotton goods being held at
the sumo itgureB which ruled a week ago.

Shoe ' men state that the shoe business
is better than usual for the dull season, a
good many reorders being received for
sorting up on summer goods. There ure a
few orders for rubber goods, but they are
fur between. Salesmen will be sent on
the road ubout September 1 with full spring
lines. Prices In leather ate very firm arid
some lines show a slight advance, while
the general tendency is nigner.
Paints, Oils nnd Glass.
Pnndltlons are verv favorable for In
creased prices ill window glass this fall
and winter, and an advance of 6 per cent
