NEW TORK, July 19 -The year s record
for dullness was approached In today a
business at the Stock exchange. The tedious
fluctuations represented potnlng but the
shifting operationa af a handful of room
tradera and they were not sufficient to
effect any appreciable movement. Few of
the active stocks moved as widely a a
point from laat night's level. Interest In
the market seemed entirely dormant until
the sharp rise at the last, when the market
held firm on the Amalgamated dividend
announcement. No leas than three meet
ing of corporation director wer sched
uled for the day to which Importance had
been attached In the previous stock mar
ket discussion and upon which speculative
hopes hsd been baaed or professed. It wss
early announced that the St. Paul meeting
could not be held owing to the Inability to
ecure a quorum of the directors. It had
been predicted with the uaual ahow of
confidence that the long expected financial
plan for the conatructlon of the Taclfio
coast extension waa to be conaldered at
this meeting and an official announcement
prepared. The market received the report
of the abandonment of the meeting without
a ripple.
Special effort had been made to drum up
a quorum of fnlon Paclflo dlrectore, but
they attended to only routine matters and
left the declaion of the next dividends In
the Mi and s of the executive committee.
Confident assertions had preceded the meet
ing that a large extra disbursement would
be made out of the proceeds of sales of
the company's holdings of Great Northern
preferred and Northern Pacific atock. The
day of a dividend announcement on Amal
gamated Copper la attended with more
speculative excitement In perloda of ae
tlvlty In the market than almost any other
event. The onlv snark of animation that
the market ahowed during the day followed
the aasembllng of that company a directors.
Various predictions had been heralded of
the probable action ranging all the way
from a passlne of the dividend to an In
creaae of 8 per cent. The atock agged
lastly on the announcement of the re
tention of the last dividend rate of 1H P"
cent to H per cent extra for tne quar
terlv period.
Foreign marketa continued under the
weight of the discouraging outlook In Rus
sia and It waa reported that the London
market waa affected by suppose! uouiaa
tion on account of the Beit estate. A re
port came from Chicago that railroad com
panlfa wer borrowing heavily from banks
there at 6H o per cent to poatpone of
ferlnga of securities In the present un
favorable market. The outcome of tomor
row's offering of moftO.OOO of Panama canal
bonds and the completion of the repayment
of 310,000,000 of government deposits which
have been recalled Is awaited with Interest.
Th. nrnfuialnnal element drew a negative
deduction favorable to a rlae from the
lack of pressure on the market, which re
sulted from the disappointing outcome of
the three meetings of the day. The strong
cloatng was the consequence of the only
demonstration of activity for the day.
Bonds were Irregular. Total aalea, par
value, 31,377,000. ITnlted Statea bonds were

HOGS The hog market has been rather
difficult to describe of late. Yesterday
hogs sold early In the morning 6-tJlnc higher
and before the close the same kind of hog
sold 10c lower. In fact It was hard work
to tell st sny time during the day Just
where the market was.
Today'a market opened very slow and
dull, but became more active when buyers
and sellers finally got together on a trad
ing basis. The hogs sold largely at 34 US
8 66, which waa a little stronger than yes
terday's close, but not so good sa yeater
day's early market. After all the slugging
the market has received at the handa of
buyers the hog today sold only about 6c
lower than at the close of last week, but
the market la 12Sc lower than the high
time the middle of laat week.

r attt.k There waa a fair run of cattle
here for a Thursdsy. Several of the trains
did not arrive until late, so that no great
number waa on sale at any one time. The
market as a whole was In very satisfactory
condition.
Beef steers of good quality were In de
mand and sold freely at good, strong
prices; in fact the general trade might be
deacrioed as a gooa, strong ana active
market. There were a number of loads
In the ysrds good enough to bring 34.00 and
better. Shippers will bear In mind that
when too cattle are selling at sucn high
prices buyers sre very apt to mak a con
aiderable distinction between them and the
medium kinds. For that reaaon common to
medium klnda of cattle are not showing aa
much improvement a are tne Better graaes,
nor are they in as good demand.
Cows and helfere were In light aupply
and aold freely at fully ateady to strong
prices. The early trains were all disposed
of In very good season in th morning.
There were not enough stockers or feed
ers to talk about, but the few on sale
brought fully steady price.

with a year sgo there Is a very large gain
In the receipts thla week. While the re
ceipts today were quite liberal they did
not arrive at tne yaroa until wen aionar
toward midday, which made the market
extremely slow and dull. The market at
tnis point is In rsther peculiar condition
owing to the fact that the week atarted
out with prices at such a high point. Buy
ers are unaoie to forget that the same
wethers which sold here on Monday at to. J)
brought 36.60 In Chicago. With figures like
that staring them In the face It would be
only natural to expect buyers to be rather
bearish In their views snd to tske plenty
of time In making their selections, all of
which means a slow and dull market.
