quence. Hitherto the sentiment of the
speculation has contended In vain agalnat

storks whenever prices turned upwards and

covered beara showed more uneasiness to
day than at any time since the decline ns
a result of the light offerings of stocks
which appeared In the market. Their buy
ing waa not on a very heavy scale as Is
Indicated by the moderate aggregate of the
day a sales of stocks, but they were obliged
to raise bids, consequently to fill up their
needs and a rather aide and comprehensive
rise In prleea followed. Opinion was gen
eral that the demand was still largely con
fined to the short Interest, and it was not
considered probable that other demands
would spring up at the sharp recovery
after having been so backward.

CATTLE Receipts of cattle we. e not as
large a a week ago, but still there waa a
very good run. There were more weetern
cattle among the receipt than any day
before this aeaaon. Among the corn-fed
were the best cattle seen here this season.
Advice from other selling points were
very discouraging this morning, Chicago
especially sending out depressing news.
Still there wss a very good demand for
rattle at this point and desirable fat steers.
such as buyers wanted, sold at steady
prices. The Graham cattle, which sold at
5.85 last week, brought 16. and were not
nearly so good today, one bunch of cattle
was good enough to bring 8)6.06. ths highest
price paid on the market since last Novem
ber. Betters wno nappenea to nave cattle
which did not especially appeal to buyers
found It Impossible to secure as good prices
aa last week, so that the market as a
whole would have to be quoted as steady
to a little lower.
There were a good many western cows
and heifers In the yarda this morning, la
fact more than on any day before this sea
son. Owing in part to the more liberal
offerings, which made It possible for buyers
to be more discriminating in making selec
tions ana part to tne nearisn reports sent
on from Chicago, the cow market waa
slow and the feeling generally weak. Some
of the best cows commanded about steady
fnces, out tne general maraet waa alow
o a little lower on the general run of
grasaers.

son began, thirty cars being reported In
when the market opened. While there we
a sprinkling of stuff that was not overly
desirable, there were some very good kill
ers among the receipts.
While the market ws slow to open It
waa fairly active when the trade waa onre
under way, so that the big bulk Af the re
ceipts changed hands by the middle of the
forenoon. As to prices there was no very
great change sa compared with the close of
last week. Possibly wethers were a little
lower In spots, but as a general thing both
buyera and sellers were quoting It about
steady. This should be taken as applying
to the desirable kinds of killers ss half fat
or eonmon kinds sre not very much sought
after at the present time and are Inclined
to drag a little.
Among the receipts, today were five dou
ble decka of the Rhea brothers Montana
wethers, which sold at 15.40, the high point
o fthe day. Theae wethers were about as
fat as one ever sees coming from grass, in
fsct they were like corn feds. There were
a few range lambs good enough to bring
27.50. end a small bunch of yearlings sold up
to M.2R. In fact the prtcos paid generslly
were very satisfactory to sellers.
