CHICAGO. July .-The probability of a
large Increase In local reuelpta tomorrow
hail a weakening enect on the wheat mar
ket today, the September delivery closing
at a decline of Vu-4aC. Corn waa up So.
Oats were up War. Provisions were un
changed to vVtO higher.
Prior to the announcement of the amount
of wheat expected to arrive in Chicago tomorrow.-
the market was firm on good
buying by shorts. The demand -was largely
uue to tne comparatively nrm tone of the
Liverpool ' market, where prlcea were
steady, notwithstanding Saturday's declino
on the. local exchange. - When It waa posted
that 1 cars ware expected here tomorrow
prices declined abruptly ai.d sentiment was
bearish for 'the remainder of the day.
Weather conditions wera ideal, both for
the harvesting and marketing of the fall
sown crop and for tha maturing of the
grain In the northwest. Lower prices for
cash wheat at Kansas City and St. Louis
depressed the price of options here. The
market closed weak at about the lowest
point of the day. September opened a
,iuwe , higher- at ..7Slc, advanced to J8'a
and then declined to 77Sc. Final quota
tions were at 7io. Clearances of wheat
und floar were equal to 171,500 bu. The
amount on passage decreased 8,64t,fli0 bu.,
and the visible supply decreased 936.000 bu.
Primary receipts were 4570,000 bu., against
631,000 bu. for the corresponding day one
year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chi
cago reported receipts of 276 cars, against
S10 cats last week and 222 care one year
"'"he corn market was firm because of re
ports of deterioration of tha new crop, be
cause of lack of moisture. Late in tue
day the market eased off temporarily on
selling. caued by reports of rain in 'he
southwest. Offerings, however, were readily
taken by shorts and commission housos
and the market quickly recovered. The

NEW TORK. July .-Tha -mptom. of
the preasure being off the stock market,
which prompted the rallying tendency of
tile latter part of last week, showed them
selves again today to some extent. But
this failed to attract any demand for
stocks or to encoursge any attempt to get
prices nigner. The moet notaoie conse
quence of this state of affairs waa the
snrinksge In the volume of the specula
tion, the day's transactions falling to a
smaller figure than for many weeks past.
Immediate developments played but a
small part In the action of the market, but
the general outlook on the future waa
kept In consideration, especlslly on the side
of the money market. Conservative action
In speculative' matter, waa felt to be de
sirable and In fact necessary to Insure a
ssfe passage through the coming period
of crop moving arid arrive demand for
money Incident to It. Pressure from In
fluential banking sources and admonition
not only through public channels, but by
f'sreonai injunction In many cases, are be
leved to be employed to effect this course.
iArge banking resources sre not available
lor speculative attempts to lift prices snd
tanking opinion is believed to favor an un
fetteid price movement. If price, seek
a lower level it Is considered desirable not
to oppose artificial restraints and it Is
urged that If further liquidation should be
found necessary and It should stsrt sud
denly from a level of prices so high ss to
offer no attraction for the absorption of
offerings, a disastrous outcome might fol
low. The Saturday bank statement with
the surplus showing reduced to S,4ti6.075
had its continuing effect In chilling specu
lative enthusiasm. Railroad earnings and
traffic reports, mercantile advices, trade
and Industrial activity and other indications
of undiminished prosperity gave rise to a
repetition of a well known Wall street
argument advanced In times of tight money
1 formulated in the term "too much pros
perity. The suggested absurdity IS due,
of course, to a fallacy in the argument.
It Is found In the assumption of an ex
haustion of supplies of capital Involved In
active expansion of enterprlaes. Profit
able investment In successful enterprise
means Increase and not depletion of avail
able capital. The borrowing 01 capital, us
expenditure In enterprises that produces
wealth and the lodgment ot securities se
cured In the process, may go on Indefinitely
without other effect than the constant In
crease of wealth and capital. But an In
terruption at any step In the process clogs
the whole machinery and produces what
Is so strikingly denned by a foremost cap
italist as indigestion of securities.
The cause of the clog is doubt of the
success of the outlsy in producing wealth
adequate to meet carrying charges, which
makes the securities unsalabe beyond first
hands which employ borrowed money to
carry them, and so leave financial affairs
dependent on their liquidation to restore
the free current of their flow snd their
mobility. Financial leaders at this time
are growing Into accord in favoring a
pause In the process of outlay. Some at
tention was attracted by English financial
criticism of Wall street s speculative de
mands for funds and bankers have ex
pressed an opinion that a movement of
gold from London would not be forced at
this time from a danger of prejudicing the
facilities for a movement In the fall when
greater need might exist. The constant
fluctuations of the day In the stock market
reflected the shifting operations or room
traders. The cose was firm at recoveries,
but not far from last week'a levels. Re-
Iterated reports of the floating of a St. Paul
loan in Paris, which had some semblance
of authority, helped to the late recovery,
Bonds were steadv. Total sales, par

SHKKr Receipt of sheep today were
the largest In over a month, about thirty
cars being reported in. '1 hey were nearly
all wesiern rangers, this being the first
day of the season en which there were
enough rangers here to really make a
market. In fact, this might be .-ailed th"
opening day of the rang season, al
though scstterlng shipments have been
straggling In during tne last two wf.M.
While the msrket on live sheep and
lambs was in fair shajie at the close of
last week, the eastern mutton market
closed very badly, so much so that buy
ers this morning were a little uncarts.. n
as to what move to make, ami in tons
quence were disposed to move slowly ntnl
await developments. That always mean,
a slow trsde end an easier tendency to
prices. The better grades of killers sold
at prices that were possibly not so very
much different from what they wonid
have brought last week, and good kinds
might be quoted at about steady.
