CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS
Featnres of the Trading; and Closing;
Frlcea on Board of Trade.
CHICAGO, July 7. Weather throughout
the United States today continued favorable
for the new wheat crop and the local mar
ket waa weak, final quotations on the Sep
tember delivery being down Sc. Corn waa
off Ho. Oats were down Hc Provisions
were l&n2Vc higher. ,
The bearish feeling that prevailed through,
out the entire session was due chiefly to the
absence of rain in the greater part of the
wheat growing sections. Other factors that
contributed to the weak tone were a decline
at Liverpool and a probability of a big
increase In the movement of the new crop
as shown by liberal acceptances of bids
sent out by cash houses. Selling was gen
eral during the day and the only support
for the market came from shorts. In tho
last half of the session the market became
steady on buying caused by reports of
sales for export. The demand, however,
vas not sufficiently lively to prevent an
other decline, prices at the close being al
most at the lowest point. September op
ened HOVo to ASc lower at 78c to
7X't)0, aold down to 78o and closed at 78,
H'.tc. Clearances of wheat and flour were
equal to 123,000 bu. Primary receipts were
417,009 bu.. against 818.000 bu. the same day
last year. Minneapolis. Duluth and Chlcigo
reported receipts of 244 cars, against Hi5
cars last week and 149 cars one vear ago.
Ideal weather for the crop and the weak
ness of wheat caused some profit-taking
in corn early in the day and resulted in
moderate weakness. Later cash houses re
ported that acceptances of bids were ex
tremely light and this caused an Improved
demand toward the middle of the day. All
of the early loss was regained and the mar
ket held ateady during the last hour of
trading. The close was steady. September
opened o to fca higher to He lower at
2!2-J?. ,ol1 b"lween 61t61Ho and
61W40 and closed at 61c. Local re
ceipt war 268 cars, with H of contract
grade.
The oats market was weak all day on
free celling by local longs. Weather condi
tions were fsvorable for the new crop and
advances from the country stated that In
many sections the growing grain showed
marked Improvement. September opened
Vo to HiHo lower at 34Cc to S4Wa4V,e.
sold between 84 o and 84"Mj34Hc and closed
Ho. Local receipts were M cars.
Provisions were quiet and firm. Ribs
were In moderate demand by small pack
ers, while other products were bought by
pit traders. The chief bullish Influence was
a 6c advance in the price, of live hogs. At
.tVA0-, BfPtmoer pork was up 12c at
17 "JAr4 wa" 2Ho higher at $3.00. Rlba

WEAKNESS FOLLOWS BANK STATEMENT
Prices Mxde Some Recovery
Toward the Ijiat and the
Cloalnar Tone Was
Steady.
NEW VORK, July 7. Cntll It waa un-
settled by the publication of the werik
bank return today the stock market showed
the good effect for the turn of the support
of the market which uppeared yesterday
after the varying struggle of the previous
portion of the week. A stimulating Influ
ence was the buoyancy of the Hill stocks.
'1 hece were affected by revival of the ore
lands deal rumors and Cnlted States Steel
stocks respondrd In sympathy. Other
speculative leaders moved upwards con
veniently. Covering of shorts for outstand
ing bear accounts admittedly played a
large part In the buying. The gains were
abruptly lost upon the appearance of the
bank statement which was a decided dis
appointment. Preliminary estimates of (be
week s currency movement had given rise
to reports of small gain In cash. The re
quirement of the trust companies to com
ply with the new law Increasing: the pro
portion of reserves to be held In their
vaults has been discussed for some time,
but It was not supposed that the with
drawal of the whole amount needed would
be deferred until the date of the required
change. The banks' loans of -.003.000 caih
during the week seems to point to that
procedure having been followed. It Is
suggested, however, that the banks may
have been making some return of covern
ment deposits In anticipation of the call
for 810,000,000 to be placed In the treasury
on July 10. Rates for sterling exchange
were maintained In the nominal market
of today and the' money market was re
ported easier. The Rank of England se
cured gold In the London market without
apparent competition from New York. The
rise In sterling exchange and the fall In
the discount rate at Paris also relieved
London of money pressure. There was an
other transfer from here throuph the sub
treasury of 2600.000 to San Francisco which
; Is due to remittance for payment of Insur
ance looses, tne settlement or wnicn is now
making progress. Prices made 'some recov
ery again at the last and the closing tone
was steady. Total sales of bonds, par

CATTLE! There were no fresh receipts
of cattle today and tho total for the week
shows a most decided falling off as com
pared with last week and with a year
ago.
Tim' week started out with a good.
strong market on all kinds of cattle, and .
with the best grades quoted a little ,
higher. The trade was fairly active, the j
receipts changing hands freely at current
prices. The Intervention of a holiday :
seemed to mark the coming of a change. I
During the latter half of the week tho
trade was slow, and, while the best kinds
were quoted about steady, it was very evi- ,
dent that the wire edge was gone from all
other grades. For the week, as a result, i
it would be ssfe to quote the best cattle 1
fully steady, with the medium to common
kinds 1016e lower. This Is the seaaon !
of the year when Texas cattle art- al.ays '
usd as a club to pound down the market I
on the common to medium granes or na
tives and that Is given as the reason for
the weakness that has been developed this
week.
Cows and heifers of good quality sold
verv well during the first part of the
week, but during the latter half buyers
began talking about shipping Texas beef,
and It became very evident that they no
longer wantea tne grass cows at me pnv
that thev had been paying. Friday's
market was very much demoralised on
that kind. For the week the best fed
rows and heifers showed but nttie cnange,
.v,ii niher kinds are 261340c lower, and
In some cases probably as much as 60o
lower on the more common grassers.
Stockers and feeders did not show very
much change during the week, both sup
ply and demand being comparatively
small, as usual, at this season of the
year. -There was, however, somn little
Inquiry for better grades of cattle of that
description and the few coming sold to
pretty good advantage.
HOGS Hogs were 6c higher this morn
ing. While the trsde was not especially
active at the start, It was fairly so when
once under way, and all the hogs were
disposed of before 10 o'clock In the morn
ing. The great big bulk of all the hoes
sold at $6.4506.50, as against $6.40M
IDU vesterdav. The top wraa $8.56,
which was also 5c higher than anything
bought yesterday.
Receipts of hogs this week have been
very light as compared with the previous
week, but considerably lower than a year
ago. As a matter of course the Interven
tion of a holiday haa had a good deal to
do with the moderate receipts. The mar
ket has showed comparatively little
change. At the beginning of the week It
was a shade lower and hogs sold on sn
average In about the same notch until
Friday, when there was a drop of 6c,
but that loss was recovered todav, so that
at the close of the week the market fs
lust about where it wa at in close or
last week. If anything
very little
stronger.

Z. O. Simmon of Kenosha. Wis., heard

Ida was 8t years old, full of energy, and
doing well In material ways. But when
he tried to enlist In th army th ur

strong enough to be a soldier.
Denied the opportunity to offer hi Ufa
on the battlefield to keep all the stars In
Old Glory' asurs field, he determined to
do what he could. Week by week, and
month by month, and yesr by year he
set aside a portion of his Income for the
nation, giving It not as a tag exacted by
law, but voluntarily. He was active In
caring for the families of men In the field
and for the men themselves when thr
came back sick or wounded.
If he could not b a soldier himself he
could at least help soldiers. And he did.
not only while the war was going on. but
ever since. For forty-five years he has
been known as one whose hand was open
to every appeal from or in behalf of any
man who had worthily worn the blue

especially to the soldiers of the great
war In which he waa not permitted to
fight.
And apparently the more he gave the
more he had to give. The more he spent
for his country and Its defenders the more
he prospered. He was able to be a large
contributor to the monument which the
Grand Army of the Republic erected to
OT. Stephenson, Its founder. He was able
to spend $12,000 on medals for soldiers, and
$26,000 on a memorial to the soldier of his
own county, in addition to countless per
sonal benefactions whose total Is unknown
but certainly runs Into scores of thou
sands. Ten or twelve years ago he began 10
entertain on soma summer dny all the
old soldiers who would come. At flrt
the invitations were confined to Kenoyha.
Later they were extended to neighboring
towns, and finally to Milwaukee and Chi
cago as well. For the comfort and en
tertainment of the guests ample provision
Is made. .
The last of these "birthday celebrations."
aa Mr. Simmons calls them, was held on
June 16. Corporal Tanner, now head of
the Grand Army of the Republic, and
Bishop Fallows were the principal speak
ers, and the guests and spectators num
bered several thousands.
Mr. Simmons Is now 77, and promises to
live a good many years longer. His an
nual birthday party, given In honor ol
men who went to war by a man who
couldn't go. Is a leading event of his com
munity, of which he 1 the most widely
known and highly honored citizen.
All of which prove that because a man
cannot do precisely what he wishes In the
way he wishes Is no reason for Riving up
his purpose. In 1961 Z. G. Simmons wished
to do something for his country. He could
not do It In one way, but he did not rive
up. He did It In other ways and kept on
doing It, with results beneficial to his
country and honorable to himself. Chicago
