NEW TORK. July t.-Early In today s
transactions In the stork market the ssme
scarcity of storks offered for sale developed
as yrsterday. This renewed the Impression
that the liquidation was over for the pres
ent. This conclusion was accepted with
extreme caution by the professional element
owing to the miscalculation of the same
ympioms yesterday when the market sold
off weakly at the last hour after a day of
striking hrmness and freedom from selling
pressure. The excessive dullness which de-
state reports veloped today on the mid-day rise was the
ugm. my, i reflection of this suspicious attitune. ins
maraet was almost at a stanastui tor inng
Intervals and prices drifted aimlessly un
til the entrance of new buying orders Into
the market caused the successive upward
movements.
The discussion about the stock exchange
hinged largely on the technical condition
of the market and took little account of
the general situation of affairs. News of
general conditions has been In fact almost
avorable throughout the period of decline
In the stock market. Conjectures as to the
extent and strength of the short Interest
In the market made tip the stsple of ths
discussion. Large borrowing of stork by
Individual firms which are not ordinarily
conspicuous In speculative dealings on the
exchsnge wsa reported. On the face of It
the borrowing of stocks for delivery showed
short sale of a similar amount. The Im
portance of the Incident was Its reflection
of the suspicious and unsettled atate of
professional speculative sentiment.
The opening market still showed the ef
fects of the disappointment over the mis
carriage of yesterday's st tempt to carry
prleea higher. The opening weakness was
aggravated by selling for London account.
Considerable disquiet was caused In that
center by the ministerial remarka In Par
liament of the haxard of the outbreak of a
religious war In Kgypt wl'h the conse
quences to be looked for of expensive out
lay for the conduct of a campaign. Lon
don's discount msrket was not affected
and continued to work lower with favoring
effect upon New York's prospects for se
curing gold at that center next week. But
pickled j money conditions here were also rather
easier, rates tor can loans railing nunng
the day. For time loans the free offerings
were confined to the shorter periods, while
for nix months loans and longer, carrying
over the end of the year money waa re
ported to be atlll scarce and hard to get
even at the 6fc per cent bid. Foreign ex
change held moat of yesterday' recovery
which was believed to be above the level
of profit for gold engagements. Estimates
of the currency movement with the Interior
by express varied from a small loss to a
gain of a few hundred dollars, the move
ment towards this center on balances hav
ing evidently abated from that of laat week.
On sub-treasury operations the banks have
gained during the week ItiOI.OOO. In con
nection with the recovery In prleea the
reports were revived of a supposed deal
for the Great Northern's ore lands by the
Vnlted States Steel corporation and of
a rumored Intention to Increase the Amal
gamated Copper dividend. It waa not until
late In the day that the rising tendency
proved convincing to the sceptical traders.
j neir oeiatea Duvmg then made tne clos
ing strong.

la, 1 1 1 re were a few right good tlntahed
heaves on aale as well aa auile a sonnmlng
of rather undesirable grassy and snort-feu
cattle. The market waa a good aeal lUe
the quality. Dretsvd beef men took hold
of the guod to cholcti dry lot beeves In
very fair shape and bought them up at
price that looked about ateady with yes
terday, while on the ordinary run of cattle
the trade was Incl.ned to drag and prices
ruled weak to 10c lower than yesterday,
compared with a week ago the desirable
cattle are selling anywhere from strong to
10c. higher, while the less desirable grades
are from steady to loc lower. In other
words the spread in prices Is increasing aa
the season advances. The best cattle here
today brought 60. i5 and a fair clearance
was made nume time before noon.
There were lesa than a doien loads of
cows here all told, and as a rule prices
were lust about In yesterday's notches.
Desirable dry-lot rows and heifers, as well
as the best graseers, are in good demand
and firm, but the thin and old grassy
cows are alow sellers at mean figures, the
same as they have been for some time
past. Veal calves, bulls, stags, etc, are
Belling at prices that show very little
change as compared with a week ago.
There waa very little doing In stockers
and feeders today aa the offerings were
decidedly limited and the demand slack.
Good to choice yearlings have developed
quite a little strength tnls week and find
their ready sale at prices log 15c higher
than a week ago for the ordinary run of
low grades and off quality stuff shows no
particular change.
