BEE .BUILDING IS SCRUBBED
Big Structure Vndergoee Thorough
CleaalngT of Oatsld
The cleaning of the granite walla of The
Bee building by scrubbing Is attracting a
great deal of attention. The practice r.ns
flourished to some extent In the east, but
the removing of smoke, dirt and weather
stains from large mercantile buildings In
the middle west In an Innovation. The
work on The Bee building la being done
by men In the charge of H. J. Waterbury
of Minneapolis, who owns a special prepar
ation to facilitate the task and who makes
a specialty of this sort of business.
Mr. Waterbury Is greatly pleased with
the result of the first day's work on the
granite, which he says has the best ap
pearance of any stone of the kind he has
ever seen used In any building. After sev
enteen years' exposure to the elements the
heavy granite surfaces had become many
shades darker than their original color.
The scrubbing restores tha original . tono
"The Bee building is one of the beet all
around structures of the kind I have ever
seen and the granite, which came from
northern Wisconsin, is admirable," says
The work on the Bee building wss
started on the corner nearest the city hall
and the contrast against the sooty facades
of the hell Is striking. It haslet Mayor'
Dahlman and some counctlmen to thinking
that It might be well to have a similar
Job done on the municipal structure. The
latter is not as old as the Bee building,
but is in by no means as good condition.
The walls, which are entirely of stone on
the Farnam and Eighteenth street sides,
and possess no small architectural beauty
of line and adornment, have never been
touched by a cleaning brush. It Is esti
mated that cleaning the two walla of tha
city hall would cost about $2,000. Mayor
Dahlman is seriously considering whether
the expense would not be justified. Many
interior repairs are needed, also, but low
funds may prevent anything being dona
this year. The old council Instructed
Building Inspector Wlthnell to make a re
port of what a thorough overhauling and
repairing of the city hall would cost.
