NEW POLICE STATION MOVE Matter Projected by Dablnaan la Being Carried Forward by Conn- cllsaan Bridges. Councilman Bridges of the committee on buildings and property has taken up tha proposal of Mayor Dahlman to sell tha present police station property and to use the receipts toward constructing a modern station and city Jail at another location. Ho Is making Inquiries to determine if the old Dodge street school building and lots, which have been used by the police depart ment for a long time, can be sold readily and about what price may be expected. 'There can be no question about tha need of a new police station and Jail." says tha mayor. "Nothing Is right about the pres ent Institution except the location and this Is good because It ts close to tha burnt district. Recent developments indicate that the burnt district la to be devastated to make way for wholesale establishments. as most of the streets have been turned over to the railroad companies for track age. If the tenderloin moves the present strategical value of the police station loca tion would be gone. 'I hardly expect we can get enough out of the property to buy a new site and put up the building Omaha ought to have, but I believe such a proposition would reduce the bonds necessary to a figure where they would be voted gladly. At any rate tha matter Is worth Investigation." DESECRATION OF THE DAY Pardoning; Criminals an Foarth of Jnly Condemned by Coanty Attorney Slabangta. County Attorney Slabaugh has declared himself as opposed to the practice of pardoning criminals on the Fourth of July. Wednesday Sam Payne and Edward Collins, two men convicted of murder In Dnugla county were turned loose by Oovernoi Mickey upon the recommendation of th attorney general, secretary of state and the chief Justice. Payne's crime waa 0 particularly brutal one, his victim being young girl. "I am opposed to the pardoning of crimi nals on the Fourth of July," said Judgs Slabaugh. "It seems to me to ba a desecration of the day to turn these mur derers loose on that day. If the men should ba pardoned It should be done on soma other day and not on tha national holiday." The pardon was issued under the Fourth of July pardon law. CONNELL ON CESSPOOL LAW Health Commissioner Bays It la Dis grace and Sboold Ba Amended, The failure of the council to paaa tha ordinance to enable the discretionary re moval of vaults and cesspools has chagrined Health Commissioner Connell. who declares the present laws on the subject are a dls. grace to Omalia.
