The rise had its impulses from abroad, where prices of Americans rose during the holiday In terval here. The weak return for the Bank of England Is a Measure of the strain of the senil-annual settlements, which Include In England the "widow dressing" require ments of the private discounts. But the de. cline In discount rates both In lxindon Hnd Pnrls showed the Influence at work of the redistribution of the funds accumulated for those purposes. Brokers had bids for storks In the opening dealings In New York with s view to reselling in London, which caused sn almost Immediate rise to the London parity. The consequence was thst uncovered bears found their positions somewhat cramped at the outset and they scrambled tc secure stocks. This was the active period of the day. Later prices were effected on greatly reduced business. The New York money market showed the ben efit of the returning flow of dividend and Interest money and both call and time loans were reported easier. The confirma tion of earlier renorts of an enaasement of gold In Australia was confused to mean an additional engagement. Discussion was hopefully renewed of probable engagements in I,ondon next week. Reports of an In tended Issue of New York treasury bonds toward the end of the month made a bad Impression in view of the many other known requirements. The Journal of Com merce estimates new capital Issues In June st 3104.0uO,00t, of which nearly 397.0O0.0OO wer of bonds. This comoares with a total of i7,500.onO In May. but the aggregate for the first six months or the year is brought to 3R27.70O.O0O, which Is less thsn 342,000,000 un der the new capital Issues for the whole of the year 19. Ice company stocks were weak on account of the success attending prosecutions in various parts of the coun try. Allis-Chalmers stocks were under pressure on renorts of the heavy discount allowed to underwriters of the new bond Issue. There was some disposition to con strue the tone of Mr. Vanderllp's address before the New York state bankers on the necessity of currency reform as containing an alarmist note. This conduced to the later reactlocary tendency of the market, which was aggravated also by the reduc tion effected In the short Interest and the withdrawal of Just so much potential sup port from the market. The weakness of Brooklyn Transit was due to reports of proposed fare regulation. The market closed weak near the lowest. Bonds were Irregular; total sales, par value, tl.7S0.0O0. United States 3s regis tered declined 4 per cent on call. The following are the quotations on the stock exchange: is. is. .. lol .Jrn . The fact was no . one seemed very hungry for cattle of any kind and tne trade as a whole was dull and very much of a drag from start to finish. There were som,e trtty good cornfed cat tle on sale this morning, and while the total offerings were small, buyers were very slow about getting down to business. They did not appear on the opening to care very much whether they secured any fresh sup plies or not. This naturally gave the mar ket a weak tone. Still, when they did sell the good kinds, that Is, those that were thoroughly well rtnlshed, brought steady prices. On the other hand, half fed and wamed-up cattle were slow and lower. Packers are shipping In from the southern markets a good many grass Texan, which they are able to. secure st much lower prices than cornfeds are selling for. These cattle naturally come Into direct competi tion with the poorer graaes 01 rea canio, thus weakening the market on -that kind. What hss been said regarding beef steers would apply equally well to the market on cows and heifers. While the supply wss very small, the market opened extremely dull. The better grades finally sold about steady, with other kinds lower. Cheap Texas cattle are depressing the market on common to medium kinds of cows snd the feeling Is that anything like liberal runs of grass cows would witness a decided reduc tion in prices. ' There were no stockers or feeders of sny consequence In sight and no noteworthy chnnge In the market. Representative sa'es: No. I.... 8... 10... 1... 71... ... 10... 3... II... 4... ... 10... 16...
