against Umaha anil In favor of Kansas
City Illegal and that the proposed
tariff rould not be accepted.
This news was highly gratifying to
President Wattles and the members of
the exchange and gave them cause for
celebrating Independence day with In
rreaaed teal. According to local train
men the proposed discrimination against
Omaha would have been exceedingly In
jurious to the Omaha grain market. Since
It was announced the exchange naa madi
determined fight to have It Knocked
out. Falling to Induce the St. Louis ft
San Franrlsco road to do so. It won on
an appeal to the Interstate Commerce com
mission. The effect of the differential would have
been to drain southern Nebraska of grain
through Kansas City without giving
Omaha any chance at It at all. he

"The (Omaha tlralu exchange recently
rxelved notice of the Intention of the St.
Louis & San Francisco railroad, a part
of the Rock Island system, to put in a
tariff from Kansas Clly to Memphis,
which should apply on all grain originat
ing In Nebraska, south of the I'nlon Pa
cific railroad Hnd which was a cnt In
existing rates of about 4 cents per 100
pounds. This was Intended to draw the
grain from that part of Nebraska through
Kansas City and to southern markets, and
the result ol It was a 4-cents differential
uguinst Omaha. The Omaha llraln ex
change Immediately protested against this
cut and sent Its secretary to Chloago
to see the officers of this road and en
deavor to get tlicm to withdraw It, as It
was an open discrimination against the
Omnlia market. Juno 28 formal ptotest
was made to the Interstate Commerce
commission by wire. This protest was
followed by a letter to Senator Millard
urging hlni to present this matter to the
commission and explain the objections of
tho Omaha Grain exchange. These ob
jections were that this tariff was a dis
criminating one that was to be applied
to one particular locairty and not to oth-
Jers and therefore was Illegal. 1 have
