C T. Jaffray of Minneapolis won the
champlonablp of the Transmlesiaslppl (Jolt
association by defeating F. W. McCartney
of Denver In the final at the Field club
Saturday by the score of I up and 4 to
play. McCartney was 1 up on the morn
Inc'a play, but In the afternoon th big
banker from Minneapolis went right after
him, and aa soon aa McCartney weakened
on his putt, began winning holes and went
to tbe food. The tournament ended with
the championship match, as the finals In

whole course somewhat damp from the
rain or Friday night. Th tee war o

hole th tee was moved forward fifty yards.
A good-eland gallery followed the player
around, but many were kept away by the
threatening rain. Neither plsyer showed
any brilliancy, evidently worn out by the
week's work, and both appeared under
considerable nervous strain, realising that
it waa tha final In th Transmlsstsslppi
the wer playing. Hertlg, th councilman
from Minneapolis, caddled for Jaffray and
earn bad a for caddie.
They drove even and well for the flmt
hoi and lay even on th second stroke.
McCartney missed a twelve-foot putt and
Jaffray made an eight-foot one, giving him
the hole In 4-4. They drove even for th
second and Jaffray topped his second with
a cleek and recovered on the third. Mc
Cartney laid Jaffray stymie and halved
the hole.

Both drove straight for th third and
both seconds wer straight and even. Both
on . th green In 4 with McCartney
nearer. On the putt McCartney was
stymie snd tried to Jump, rimming the
hoi, but Jaffray missed sn easy putt and
all wer even. They drove even for th
fourth and both on green In t. with
McCartney lying better. They halved it In
four.
They drove alike for the fifth and Mc
Cartney foosled his second, while Jaffray
went on th green, aa did McCartney In
8. Jaffray mlased an easy put, but Mc
Cartney did likewise, putting Jaffray 1 up.
For th sixth hole JalTray drove In th
rough, topped his second and was on th
green In I. McCartney stymied his ball
and Jaffray tried to Jump, but missed, mak
ing the gam all even.
Neither made a good drive for th sev
enth, but were even, and even again on
ft, and both on the green in J. Jaf
fray missed a four-foot putt, putting Mc
Cartney 1 up. Both drove to the edge of
the green on the eighth and Jsffrsy dubbed
bis approach and rimmed the bole In ft,
dpMng McCartney th hoi and making him
t up.
McCartney drove Into the bunker for the
ninth, while Jaffray drove well. McCart
ney recovered well, but Jaffray missed a
chance to win the hole. McCartney rimmed
the hole In 4, putting his ball stymie
and they halved it In ft.
Jaffray Makes Fia Drive.
Jaffray mad a splendid drive at th
tenth, but th ball rolled far down the
slop. He recovered well, but his ball fell
la casual watt on the green. McCart
ney, by a good J rive and great approach,
halved th hul with the Minneapolis
man, 4-4.

even. Two good approaches laid both on
th green, but Jaffray missed an easy putt
and halved th hole. 4-4.
McCartney's approach, after a splendid
drive at tha twelfth, waa too strong and
gar th hole to Jaffray, who putted well
here, by a score of 4-1.
Both men made excellent drives at th
thirteenth, but McCartney drew a bad lie.
His approach waa so good, however, that
he might have won the hole had It not
been for miserable putting. Jaffray halved

By missing a two-foot putt at th four
teenth McCartney lost the hoi to Jaf
fray. 4-4. At th fifteenth both made gooJ
drives and McCartney followed his with
wonderful brasaey shot. His miserable
putting, however, lost him the hole, -4-Jaffray
waa then 1 up.
MoCartney braced up at the sixteenth
aad bis two lovely drives and a good
putt put him down la 4. while Jaffray,
playing steadily weaker, took I.

The largest gallery of the week fol
lowed the players In the sfternoon and
saw two beautiful drives at the first hole,
with each on the green In two. .. McCart
ney missed a putt to win and they halved
the first hole. Both msde good drives and
good approaches for the second hole, but
both missed their putts snd this hole
was also halved. Both again made beau
tiful drives for th third hole and Jaf
fray made a great Iron ahot, while Mc
Cartney topped his approach. Jaffray lit
within a foot of th hoi and McCartney
missed hi chance to Halve and Jaffray
won, making the score even up.

Each missed the putt and halved the hole.
Jaffray drove well for the fifth, was on
ths green In two and made the hole In
four, while McCartney drove off the course,
giving Jaffray the hole and making him"
on up.- Each -wer on th sixth green In
two and halved the hole In four.
In driving for the seventh hole both
were down the middle of the course, but
McCartney dubbed his second and was
over the road in three. Both were oh the
green in four and halved It . Jaffray drove
to the south side of the eighth green snd
McCartney to the north. McCartney over
approached and Jaffray missed hi putt,
halving the hole and leaving Jaffray one
up. McCartney drove to the edge of ths
bunker, but both made the green In two,
but McCartney missed hia putt, leav.ng

Both drove to the left of the green for
the tenth hole, each approaching well and
halving the hole In three. To the eleventh
hole Jaffray drove a-little short of the vided as to whether the Minneapolis man

llsncy of his approach shots. McCartney
first began to attract attention when In
a stiff contest of nineteen holes he over
threw last veer's champion. Warren lilck-"
Inson of Dea Moines. A putt of twenty-five
feet gave him a hole which seemed hope
lessly lost, and Just to show that this was
not an accident he almost repeated the
trick on the next two auccenstve holes.
Then he met Bun Oulnand. Des Moines'
hopes of the championship with Dickinson
defeated rested In young Gulnand. the boy
wonder. In many reapects he waa the most
brilliant player on the links, but he showed
weakness against McCsrtney, whose ap
proaches were superb. Johnston of 8t.
Taul gave McCartney the hardest tussle
he had so far encountered In the semi
final. .Johnston showed symptoms of
nervousness at one or two critical points
and lost the match with a poor drive and
a poorer putt at the last hole.
Jaffray His Welllactoa.
McQartney met his Waterloo Saturday
afternoon only In the last half of the final
round, when he fell before Jaffray, the
big Minneapolis banker. Jaffray had also
met and overcome some redoubtable op
ponents In the first round h defeated
Thomas, who holds the course record of
seventy-five. L. H. Johnson waa easier,
but Hodge of Ksnsss City gave him a
close tussle.
In the semi-final round Jaffray met and
defeated Bprague Abbott, tbe star of the
Omaha Cftuntry club, who. In the qualify.
Ing round, with a high wind, had made
the only comparatively low acore of 141.
Abbott had again ahown hia prowess when
he overthrew Bend of St. Paul, who came
to Omaha with the biggeat reputation of
all the big contingent from the Twin Cities.
It was one of the misfortunes of the tour
nament that Bend should have been put
out In an. early round. Abbott, however,
was unsble to repeat th trick when he en
countered Jaffray. Hard work on the links
for several successive days was showing
Its effects, and Jaffray s victory was
largely due to his superior stsytng powers.
When Jsffrsy won the first hole from Ab
bott, th latter was visibly affected, and
when he won the third straight It wss his
undoing.
Helpa Him ta th Last.
This quality again served him well In the
final against McCartney. McCartney
started out to win. At the end of nine
holes It seemed like the Denver man's
gam. . But Jaffray never lost his nerve,
but on the other hand, added a little steam
to his game. When the second half started
with McCartney one up, opinion was dl
and In tbe fourteen holea played in the
second half actually did alx of them better
than bogey.
Omaha was successful In winning two of
the cups, the directors' cup won by F. H.
Oslnes of the Country club, and the direc
tors' cup won by A. Lt Reed, also of the
Country cluh. "Mike" Thomas was runner
up for the consolation prise.

The Rourkes took the first of an Inter
esting double-hesder with the Sioux yes
terday afternoon and came so close to get
ting the second, after a wonderfully
fought . contest, that only the calling of
the game after the tenth Inning saved
the Carney tribe from worse defeat. Both
games were filled with tnterestmg features
and kept the i.SOO fana on the gog all the
while.
The Sioux got aboard In the first game
by tleing the Omaha acore In the fifth and
then working hard to overcome the lead
Pa'a boys later secured. In the second
game the lowsns took advantage r.f
Koukallk'a off day and slammed out nine
hits snd six runs before the end of the
third Inning. But when McNeeley re
plsced Kouksllk a hard fight waa on. Four
hits and no runs was all they did with
Mr. McNeeley after he cams In. And then
the home boys took sfter th Sioux with
McNeeley at the wheel. The Sioux score
of six runs was tied In th eighth amid
a pandemonium of cheers, and after two
more Innings of profitless playing Umpire
Keefe called the game on account of dark
ness, with the score to t snd a lot of
disappointed fsns.
How the Faa Begaa.
The way the Rangers went sfter the
Sioux after the third Inning of the second
gsme.wss a caution. .Not only did they
land on Mr. Corbett for a few, but In the
field they kept the Sioux from making a
run after th third Inning. Take In that
fifth Inning of th second gam for in
stance: After two men wer out Certer sent out
a life and msde second on Meyer's had
throw. Howard followed suit and found
second base on a throw to home plate
to head off Carter, who stopped at third
on hi way areund the earth. Carter
scored when Perrlng went out st first and
Bassey sent out a fine three-bagger to the
right field fence, scoring, when t Runkle
followed with a single. Four hits and
three runs In the fifth.
Then things went along quietly for a
spell until the eighth, when the Rourkes
made two scores after two men went down.
That was when they tied th Sioux score
and caused the grandstand to tremble. Mo
Neeley started In by going out on a left
field fly and Carter ssw his finish at first.
Things were not looking overbrlght Just
then with two men up and two outs. Just
then Howard and Perrlng had a bright idea
wnicn they carried Into effect by sending
out singles to right field and getting to
the bases. Then Welch walked and tit
base wer full. Bassey cam to bat.
"Knock It out, Buster:" yelled l.om fsns.
And Buster did send ths ball out. Howard
scored, Sioux City Meyers made an error
and then Perrlng scored. Th soor wss
tied and two mn left on base. Then
Dolan went out.
Bat Mae Waa at th Helm.
Th Sioux tried with might and main
to wrest a victory In th second gam,
but McNeeley would not allow It.' Several
time they had Tnen on the bases at critical
parlods of th gam, but superb fielding
by the Omaha players did the business
On two or three particular occasions Welch
was conspicuous In pulling down high ones,
on Instance especially being a most has
ardoua undertaking.
McNeeley pitched In splendid form. H
did not pas a man and allowed but few
hits.
Carter mad on of th most noteworthy
plays In ths first game by throwing from
right garden to third base, wher Perrlng
received th ball In tlm to catch Tat
out.
PHchr Patterson of th Bloux held th
Rangers down well In th first gam, while
Corn was more effective for th Omaha
team In th earns game. Bender and Bas
sey mad th only three-base hits of th
day.
Th Omaha team won tb entire series
with th Sioux, not considering the tie
game, which will be plsyed off at som later
date. Th Denver team will be her this
afternoon. ,

losing only the Sunday amnio at Pueblo,
wh'ch was due to a dust storm, during
which the ball was lost while two Pueblo
players circled the diamond. Klglit of the
regulars proved themselves terrors at the

seven games. In brief, for the week the
